The Nether is an episodic activity introduced in Episode: Heresy. It follows a Fireteam of Guardians as they scour through the halls of the Dreadnaught, all while defeating The Dread and Dire Taken that have infiltrated it. Much like the Deep Dive and The Coil activities, The Nether follows a rogue-like formula, with each instance of the activity being different than the last, with players being able to discover and acquire boons that offer an array of effects, along with acquiring Sigil Stones and other currencies to upgrade their runes at the Shaping Slab. However, unlike most rogue-likes, The Nether is not infinite and ends after the third round.

Overview[edit]

This activity uses revive tokens, so your revives are limited. In addition, health regeneration is disabled by default. When the activity starts, players will see a Hive console in front of them that will allow them to spend Sigil Shards to unlock runes that can be slotted in up to maximum amount of rune slots, depending on the rank of the Shaping Slab in Eris's apartment whilst walking the Path of Resolve and the Path of Ambition. Throughout the activity, you can find destructible pots, chests, and a material called Fleeting Metastasized Essentia, which will be lost if players leave the activity, but can be converted into Metastasized Essentia after defeating a final boss in the area. Some chests will require players to spend 2 Essences of Desire. Sometimes, interacting with chests, breaking pots, uncovering a secret, or defeating a high-value target will allow players to acquire a Minor Boon, a type of boon that can stack up to 10 at a time and eventually give them a scroll from the Mysterium that can permanently increase the number of stacks they can carry once they have collected enough duplicates of that Minor Boon. Players can also find secrets throughout the activity, and running through the floating sigils of the Hive pantheon will play dialogue reciting a passage from the Books of Sorrow as well as the Sororicide lore book. After completing an objective within the area, players can acquire Major Boons, a type of boon that can change how players play through the activity, as well as Corrupted Boons, a type of boon that gives a penalty and a boost simultaneously. Players are only allowed to carry up to a total of 6 non-Minor Boons. After completing 3 objectives within the area, a boss fight begins, and the boss is dependent on the specific area where the objectives were completed. The rewards that are earned in the activity are influenced by the active ritual within the Tome of Want. After an Act of the Episode: Heresy is completed, players can also interact with a Hive bio-computer to uncover a portal where a Scroll of Strength upgrade and entries of the Songs of Descent lore book can be unlocked while playing the Exploration mode.

    • Drifter: Good work, hero. You cleaned up in here!

    First Delve[edit]

    Act 1: Week 1

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Sloane: Eris's killer in somewhere on the Dreadnaught. A Taken subjugator… I don't know who's doing the Taking now, but that's a problem for another mission. Let's hit this first. We left this place to rot, like a bad memory tarnishing Saturn's rings. Not a smart call, and it cost us too much.

    Or alternatively

    • Sloane: When Ikora heard what happened… Rage. It was rage. But she couldn't just abandon the Tower. So Ikora sent us as her rage, Guardian. Let's do her justice.

    Or alternatively

    • Drifter: Whenever you dust a Taken, they get sent back to the Ascendant Plane; then they come right back to fight again. Only good thing is, they couldn't Take anymore. Now they can, and no one here knows why.

    Or alternatively

    • Sloane: Drifter. You and Eris were close.
    • Drifter: Not anymore. She's dead.
    • Sloane:That's all you have to say?
    • Drifter: That's all.
    • Sloane: This was hard on all of us. You know you aren't alone, right?
    • Drifter: See, that's the thing, Thunderguns. We try to distract ourselves from it, but… we're all alone.
    Act 1: Post-Week 3

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Echo of Navigation: Heir-presumptive, I make you sharp so that you may continue my logic and uphold my law. You will take up my mantle and become me. You will remove everything that can be removed. And you will bring extinction to your enemies, as I brought extinction to mine.

    Or alternatively

    • Echo of Navigation: Knife of My Slaying, you walk these halls as heir-presumptive. Answer.
    • Sloane: The Guardian doesn’t want it. Doesn't NEED it.
    • Echo of Navigation: This is what they are. There is nothing else they can become. The ruthless will drag them down to die, unless they become so. Unless they become free.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: WHY DOES OUR BROTHER REFUSE TO PICK UP HIS SWORD ONCE MORE, IN FLESH AND BONE?
    • Echo of Navigation: I spoke to the Deep. If I truly died, then I am dead. Aiat. You followed a charlatan into heresy and lost your edge. What truth can you offer?
    • Xivu Arath: AN UNWORTHY SPEAKER, PUNISHED. A FALSE IDOL, UNSEATED. AND I WAS DETHRONED. AND YOU WERE DEAD. WHAT IS BEHIND IS TAINTED. WHAT IS FORWARD IS TRUTH. TITHES, AND SWORDS, AND ORYX, OUR KING.
    Act 2: Week 3

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Eris Morn: Sloane. Drifter tells me that you confronted him in the wake of my sudden absence.
    • Sloane: I may have lost my temper, but… He abandoned his post. That doesn't bother you?
    • Eris Morn: It troubles me, yes. But he has returned to us, and to our goal. I believe that is what matters, regardless of what drives him. When all was lost, he sought the only thing he thought would give him comfort. Escape. When escape did not comfort him, he returned to face his guilt. I will not judge him for it.

    Or alternatively

    • Drifter: Hey, Eris. When you got all Hive-like to take on Xivu, I knew you'd be there when the job was done. I don't doubt you now either, but… maybe you hang out back from now on. I can't take that again. Please.
    • Eris Morn: Your worry is sweet, but unnecessary. In my absence, I did not mean to cause such grief.

    Or alternatively

    • Savathûn: Brother, you're clinging to something that betrayed you long ago. We are the proof, remember? Your words. And your proof failed.
    • Echo of Navigation: It did. And I must understand why. I must understand the path of our lie. I will find our Osmium Court and our father's orrery. There I will remember, and again, tame the Deep.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: BROTHER! KING! YOU SEEK FUNDAMENT. YOU SEEK CHILDHOOD. I WILL DENY YOU! OUR WAR IS LOVE. DO YOU REFUSE IT? DO YOU FORGET? WHAT IS AT PEACE IS SICK!
    • Echo of Navigation: Sister, we were betrayed. Fed lies to fatten worms. I failed to understand.
    • Xivu Arath: OUR WORMS GAVE US STRENGTH. YOU MADE US WHAT WE ARE. YOU WERE TAUGHT TO BURROW, AND GREW WINGS!

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: SISTER! YOU POISONED OUR BROTHER'S THOUGHTS. HE ABANDONS US BECAUSE OF YOUR TRUTH.
    • Savathûn: Oh no, you can't blame me for this one. Our Oryx is as stubborn as ever. When he sets his sights on something, he pursues it until he's satisfied. You know that.
    • Xivu Arath: HE FLEES DUE TO YOUR WORDS. YOU LEAD US INTO FOLLY. I SHALL CORRECT OUR FAMILY BY FORCE.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: SISTER! YOUR TRICKERY WOULD HAVE DENIED THE LIARS THEIR LIGHT. YOUR CUNNING COULD HAVE DENIED THEM THEIR SKY. YET YOU OPPOSE ME. YET YOU REFUSED THE FINAL SHAPE. YOU COURT EXTINCTION AS YOU INDULGE HERESY.
    • Savathûn: Aren't you tired, sister? That sword logic must be so heavy. I know you'd put it down, if you could. Don't you want to be on the right side of the blade when it falls?
    Act 3: Week 1

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Xivu Arath: I REJECT YOU AS I REJECT MY WITCH-SISTER. I REJECT YOU AS I REJECT MY FALSE-SISTER. I REJECT YOU AS I REJECT YOUR SKY.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: SISTER. LIAR. BETRAYER. YOUR CUNNING SEALED AWAY MY THRONE. I WILL FIND IT AGAIN. CLAIM IT. BREAK INTO THIS WORLD. I WILL TAKE YOUR HIGH COVEN IN CONQUEST. I WILL RETURN YOUR DECEIT AND BETRAYAL. I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE.
    • Savathûn: You were always so dramatic, Xivu. You won't always get your way. You never learned to live with that.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: HERETIC-SISTER. THRONE-BEARER. YOUR KNIFE REJECTS MY BROTHER'S MANTLE, YET YOU CLAIM HIM PRISONER. YOU DENIED OUR LOGIC. YOU DEFIED OUR LAW. YOU ARE OUR HERESY!
    • Eris Morn: And your own heresy sits in fine company with mine. Does this knowledge make you bitter, Xivu Arath? Or does it terrify you?
    Act 3: Week 2

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Sloane: Drifter. We need to talk.
    • Drifter: Eh, last time you said that, you ended up punching me in the face.
    • Sloane: You deserved it.
    • Drifter: I did… but that's not the point!

    Or alternatively

    • Eris Morn: Drifter. Your actions in the wake of my death; did you attempt a wish?
    • Drifter: You, uh… heard about that? Yeah, I shook that damn rock of yours. Nothin' happened.
    • Eris Morn: We were fortunate. I was not dead. And what else?
    • Drifter: I tried everything. Anything.
    • Eris Morn: Foolish… but sweet. Thank you.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: SAVATHÛN! SATHONA! SISTER! WE HAVE LOST OUR KING, OUR NAVIGATOR! WE HAVE LOST OUR BROTHER AGAIN.
    • Savathûn: We never had him back in the first place. He wanted nothing to do with us. He was disgusted by what we became. We changed, and he didn't. Oryx, in his infinite adaptability. He wanted to go back. That's what his logic entailed. Let him go. Xivu, Xi Ro, sister. We have to let him go.

    Second Delve[edit]

    Act 1: Week 1

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Sloane: The Dreadnaught's always been dangerous. Any fireteam we send in takes on tremendous risk. The Vanguard kept it monitored, but bringing Oryx's flagship under our control? We'd never hold it for long enough to matter. Well… sometimes, you do the impossible. You just have to cinch up your armor straps and get to work.

    Or alternatively

    • Sloane: Taken power is pulsing through this place. It's… alive. Breathing.

    Or alternatively

    • Drifter: Here's something big about the Taken: they need someone to tell them what to do. Oryx, the Witness… bet Mara could grab 'em, too, if she wanted. Hell, even I can get ahold of 'em for Gambit. So, I got a question for you, killer: Who told them to murder Eris?

    Or alternatively

    • Sloane: I don't believe we're all alone, and neither do you. We've built a community in the City.
    • Drifter: Not my community. There's no use putting my life on the line for it.
    • Sloane: Stop throwing chaff. You choose that community, every day. It's why the loss hurts. Why it demands justice. So we take it and put that justice between us and our enemies.
    • Drifter: I'd envy you… if you weren’t so damn gullible. Justice! Does justice keep your heart from collapsing? No! Never does.
    • Sloane: You finish, and she's still just gone.
    Act 1: Post-Week 3

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Echo of Navigation: I am told that in my last life, I had a son. Crota, my sister tells me, came to your only moon and hollowed it with his throne. When you destroyed him, I brought my Dreadnaught to bear my High War upon this system. Is that what drove me here? Sentimental revenge? A waste of my logic. The dead deserve extinction.

    Or alternatively

    • Echo of Navigation: Taken, yet you retain your will. Sword-bearer, Knight of the Deep. You defy your king.
    • Sloane: I'm no Taken, and you're no king. The universe is more complicated than you think. That's why you failed, and your legacy died with you. I barely remember your name.
    • Echo of Navigation: Hm. So you say. Yet here you are, vying for the remnants of my kingdom.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: YOU ARE HERE, WITH ME. WE MAY RETURN TO OUR PATH. WE MAY REJOIN OUR CONQUEST.
    • Echo of Navigation: Then test me, sister. Destroy me. Are you afraid that you will fail? Or are you afraid you will succeed?
    Act 2: Week 3

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Sloane: You know, Drifter kept me grounded when I came back from Titan. I was surprised he left.
    • Eris Morn: Once, he would have killed himself again and again to avoid feeling a thing like grief. He has grown, but we can all fracture.
    • Sloane: We need to be able to absorb hits like this without backsliding. How can we be sure he won't walk out again?
    • Eris Morn: We cannot. All we can do is trust and heal.

    Or alternatively

    • Drifter: I know you have your shiny new immortality palace, but… That's just it. You're bringing Oryx there. And I trust you, but…
    • Eris Morn: You trust, but you fear. I understand your guilt. But I would have been aboard the Dreadnaught with or without you.
    • Drifter: But I WAS there. And then I woke up to a world without you.
    • Eris Morn: There is no blame for my death… nor your surviving it. I woke to a world of my own. Put down your fear, Drifter. You do not deserve such a burden.

    Or alternatively

    • Savathûn: Why are you wasting your time on long-settled debts? The world is different now. We can be too.
    • Echo of Navigation: That is Xivu Arath's argument, but the Deep calls an heir to the throne still.
    • Savathûn: She'd have you go back, you know. Right to the moment before you died. I just want you free.
    • Echo of Navigation: And what is it I want? I will diverge from our past, and my sisters will accept it, or endure it.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: MY NAVIGATOR! I SEND MY ARMIES TO YOUR THRONE! I WILL NOT LET A LIAR'S TRUTH DETER YOU FROM OUR PATH.
    • Echo of Navigation: Xivu, sister. We made a vow to destroy Taox and reclaim our Osmium Court. We did not. I thought myself the heir to Fundament, to the ten-year krill. But I am not. Not yet. I must return.
    • Xivu Arath: YOUR COURT IS HERE, WITHIN THE WORM-HUSK WHERE THE DEEP FORGES NEW BONDS. THEY ARE SIGNS TO TAKE UP YOUR BANNER. RAISE UP YOUR SWORD.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: THE WORMS, OUR GODS, GRANTED TRUTH IN THE SHAPE OF POWER. WE MADE OATHS AND VOWED TO NEVER BETRAY OUR NATURE.
    • Savathûn: That's the thing, isn't it? Oryx dove to understand. Now he realized he was wrong. And in looking back… I really should have seen this coming.

    Or alternatively

    • Savathûn: I needed you off the board, little sister. I knew that you would hide and lick your wounds without your throne. It kept you from invading the Traveler. It kept you away from the Witness' failure. Now I can extend a hand in familial love. Now that you need protecting, I can protect you.
    • Xivu Arath: YOU REFUSED MY LOVE WHEN YOU GUIDED OUR HERETIC-SISTER TO HER THRONE. I REJECT YOU.
    Act 3: Week 1

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Xivu Arath: WHEN I RETURN TO MY THRONE, I WILL BRING MY TERRACE TO BEAR UPON YOUR SYSTEM. I WILL OPEN ITS MOUTH WIDE AND TEAR YOUR WORLD TO PIECES. I WILL FASHION CATHEDRALS FROM YOUR BONES AND FOUNTAINS FROM YOUR RUIN. AND YOUR FLESH WILL BE FINE TRIBUTE TO THE WORM OUR GOD.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: OUR BROTHER, OUR NAVIGATOR. YOU WOULD TURN HIM FROM HIS NATURE. I WILL NOT LET YOU.
    • Savathûn: I don't think anything could turn him from his nature. But he won't be what you want him to be, not anymore.
    • Xivu Arath: WHY? SISTER, WHY?
    • Savathûn: Because times change, and you have to change with it.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: BETRAYER-SISTER. YOU HIDE WITHIN A STOLEN THRONE.
    • Eris Morn: Envy becomes you.
    • Xivu Arath: I WILL TEAR YOUR SOUL FROM ITS SETTING!
    • Eris Morn: You were unseated. Be silent.
    • Xivu Arath: YOUR CYST-WORLD—
    • Eris Morn: BE. SILENT! Childish fool. You will be cowed, and your worm will starve.
    Act 3: Week 2

    The fireteam explores the Dreadnaught.

    • Sloane: I understand you needed Eris. But we needed you here, and you ran off to who knows where.
    • Drifter: I know. Eris once called me a "starving man". She was right. I was starved. And when she was gone, I was… starved again. You know what hunger does to a body.
    • Sloane: I do.

    Or alternatively

    • Drifter: Heh! You know, Savathûn said you were in a better place.
    • Eris Morn: And you did not believe her.
    • Drifter: No.
    • Eris Morn: Even after what was learned within the Pale Heart?
    • Drifter: Hell no. But now I know I gotta keep living, or else — what, the Traveler scoops out my soul? I got a soul now?
    • Eris Morn: Unlikely.
    • Drifter: [chuckles, then sighs]
    • Eris Morn: [chuckles]

    Or alternatively

    • Savathûn:I wanted us to be free, Xivu. Not as you are, but as we could be.
    • Xivu Arath: YOU ARE THE UNFREE! WITHOUT YOUR WORM, YOU ARE TETHERED TO A FALSE GOD.
    • Savathûn: Surely you understand that tithes come in all sizes. I'm paving the way, Xivu. Unknown territory. So think of it this way: we don't need to be tethered to any gods at all. That's where it all leads.

    Completion[edit]

    Act 1: Week 1

    The fireteam collects their rewards.

    • Sloane: Eris always did whatever she set her mind to, regardless of the risk. And regardless of who told her no. I can respect that, but that risk gets an edge when you encounter something you're not ready for. We can't let ourselves be caught off guard again. We're going to peel this place apart until there's nowhere to hide another ambush.

    Or alternatively

    • Sloane: Transmatting you out, Guardian. You fought hard, but the Dreadnaught fought back. If we're going to do this, then we need to change our tactics. We need to adapt.

    Or alternatively

    • Drifter: Eris wouldn't have wanted you to quit. And she didn't want me to quit, either. Probably why she said what she said. Keep us strong. I dunno if I… coulda been stronger. I died too. I… Only difference is that… I could wake up. To this. You know… you're the closest thing I got to a friend. Ain't that the saddest thing you ever heard?

    Or alternatively

    • Sloane: This isn't what she would have wanted. You know that.
    • Drifter: What do you want? Some kinda sappy confession? I don't do those! I'm not gonna say she made me a better person! That wasn't on her. I am who I am! And I sure as hell ain't gonna say, "She's in a better place." She fought to live! I saw it, in her eyes! She trusted me, and I failed her. That's it! She's dead! And I’m done talkin'.
    Act 1: Post-Week 3

    The fireteam collects their rewards.

    • Echo of Navigation: What other heresies did I entertain as the years unfolded? What else, besides my death? Xivu Arath fails to test her strength out of fear of her own mortality. She wants me to turn away from our logic out of liar's love. In my resurrection, I only see her failure. Hers, and mine. In you, I see the strength I had that can endure forever.

    Or alternatively

    • Echo of Navigation: The halls of my Dreadnaught are filled with the gleeful exploration of knives. They descend as I descended, carving their names into the Deep, where dead worms speak sharp truths.
    • Sloane: Is that some sort of challenge? The Guardians killed you once, Oryx. They'll kill you again.
    • Echo of Navigation: Let us discover that end together, then. Aiat.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: BROTHER! YOU WOULD LAY DOWN YOUR EXISTENCE FOR AN UNWORTHY SUCCESSOR! YOU WOULD MANTLE A LIAR. WHY? I WILL NOT LET YOU!
    • Echo of Navigation: We agreed: if something greater comes to destroy us, then we do not deserve existence. I must be what I am, and I am defeated. My logic is true. This is proof eternal. And yet you deny it. That, sister, is heresy.
    Act 2: Week 3

    The fireteam collects their rewards.

    • Sloane: Losing you broke him. I should have realized how bad it was. I'll give him time.
    • Eris Morn: We all recoil sometimes when challenged. I have done the same. Isolate, throw myself into danger. Wallow. Rage. Is running worse than self-immolation?
    • Sloane: You did something with your grief. Helped humanity.
    • Eris Morn: It is grief all the same. That it did not inspire sacrifice in him is not a fault. Grief is a knife clutched in a closed fist, and he used it to harm himself. We must extend grace. That is all.

    Or alternatively

    • Drifter: Keepin' the Echo locked down is tough. I ain't gonna tell you what you can and can't do. Still, it could go sideways fast. But I'm here if it does. And so in Thunderguns. Taken King won't one up us. I trust us. I trust you. We'll get it done. And after…

    Or alternatively

    • Savathûn: Do you know what happened to your remains, dear brother? Let me tell you. It was captured by one of Saturn's moons. Titan, with its vast methane seas. You were caught in its orbit and you fell. But your brood tithed to your hidden worm still, and your bloated flesh pulsed. And when my Lightbearer Hive descended to raise you—
    • Echo of Navigation: You sought my resurrection? With… Light? Betrayer.
    • Savathûn: I did. But oh, don't worry. The Guardians made sure you stayed dead.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: BROTHER. OUR LOGIC GRANTS POWER. OUR JOY IS TO CONQUER. THERE IS NO FALTERING. TO RETURN TO WHAT WE WERE WILL BE A NEW BETRAYAL. I WILL NOT ALLOW IT! THIS I VOW.
    • Echo of Navigation: I vowed to understand.
    • Xivu Arath: I VOWED NEVER TO FORGET MY NATURE. I VOWED TO NEVER LOWER MY BLADE. YOU ASK ME TO DO SO NOW?
    • Echo of Navigation: I didn't ask you anything at all.

    Or alternatively

    • Savathûn: Poor Xivu Arath. Painted herself into a corner so she could have her fun. Then Oryx died, and lost his right to exit. You looked for him everywhere. Even in Eris Morn! And now he's here, and he wants nothing to do with you. Heretic and hypocrite.
    • Xivu Arath: LIAR! WITCH-SISTER! I WILL NOT LISTEN.
    • Savathûn: I do not need to lie to you, Xivu. We're both heretics, and you lie to yourself well enough.

    Or alternatively

    • Savathûn: You were lied to, Xivu. Just like Oryx. Just like me.
    • Xivu Arath: YOUR WORDS LED US TO THE DEEP. YOUR CUNNING BROUGHT US POWER. NOW YOU ASK US TO RELINQUISH IT? NOW YOU AKS US TO TURN AWAY FROM THE LOGIC THAT HAS HELD US SINCE WE TOOK OUR MORPHS? REMEMBER, SISTER: WE WOULD HAVE BEEN EATEN AS PREY. WE WOULD HAVE BEEN DROWNED BY THE GOD WAVE.
    • Savathûn: That was long ago. Now look at it this way: unless you escape this game, you'll be worm food. And no one wants that.
    Act 3: Week 1

    The fireteam collects their rewards.

    • Xivu Arath: DO YOU SEE, WARRIOR OF THE SKY? DO YOU SEE HOW I OPPOSE YOU? MY BROOD GROWS, THEIR MORPHS CHOSEN, THEIR WORMS FED. I WILL FREE MY BROTHER WITH FORCE. YOU WILL NOT HAVE HIM. YOU WILL NOT HAVE HIM. ORYX! DO YOU HEAR ME? ORYX, I AM COMING.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: OUR WAR WAS AS OUR BROTHER'S LOVE. YOU TURNED FROM IT. YOU TURNED FROM ME. AND NOW YOUR SCHEMES HAVE TURNED HIM FROM US BOTH. I WILL KILL YOU AND YOUR SPECK OF LIGHT.
    • Savathûn: Bring it on, honey. You're walking right into a trap.

    Or alternatively

    • Xivu Arath: ERIS MORN. YOU USED MY SISTER'S DEATH TO FASHION A SEAT OF HERESY. YOU USED MY LOGIC'S POWER TO DENY ME MY COURT. NOW YOU STAND BETEEN ME AND MY BROTHER. I WILL NOT ALLOW IT.
    • Eris Morn: And what will you do to stop me?
    • Xivu Arath: WITH MY BROTHER'S POWER, MY BROOD WILL SWARM SOL AND DEVOUR YOUR ACOLYTES! WITH THE STRENGTH OF MY WORM, I WILL STRIP YOUR FLESH FROM YOUR BONES!
    • Eris Morn: Come. My court is vengeance, and I will meet you there.
    Act 3: Week 2

    The fireteam collects their rewards.

    • Sloane: I said to Eris that we're a unit. And that includes you, Drifter. Whether you like it or not.
    • Drifter: I'm-I'm sorry. For what I did and didn't do. I would have left it all behind. I never would have known. I gotta live with that now.
    • Sloane: I recognize that feeling. It's shame. But… Like Eris said. You're here. That's what matters.

    Or alternatively

    • Drifter: Woo! Been a wild ride, huh?
    • Eris Morn: Quite. I lost a life and gained a throne. I slit the Witch Queen’s throat, banished the god of war from her domain. And the navigator…I have felt the joy of seeing justice paid twice…
    • Drifter: And now?
    • Eris Morn: Now… the future.

    Or alternatively

    • Savathûn: We can lead the Hive somewhere new. A place better than what the worms dictated to us all that time ago. Because your world is falling apart again. Another god-wave is coming, but we have no one to blame but ourselves. Whatever lies you're resting on, Xivu Arath, it will be over soon. You'll be swept away.
    • Xivu Arath: YOU DID THIS!
    • Savathûn: I did whatever I could to survive this universe. So did you. So did he. And now? We'll have to adapt again.

    Secret Chest[edit]

    First Chest[edit]

    • Sloane: Guardian. I mentioned that there's a new influence on the Taken. Like feedback over a comms channel. It's been getting stronger, and gaining clarity. Like a radio signal gradually tuning in. I didn't want to mention this until I was sure but… it has a familiar rhythm to it. A cadence. I'm not sure how, but I'm afraid a Dread commander gained access to the Taken. Keep this between us for now. I don't want to raise alarm unnecessarily. Just… keep

    Second Chest[edit]

    • Eris Morn: Oryx's return instigated a grand schism in the Hive. They are shaken. They entertain the first doubt, the oldest doubt. They call it the "Entaoxuanna."The doubt that will destroy them. The doubt that will undermine their core philosophy. Whatever happens must be so, but what must be so, is poison. Their king was slain, but his mantle went unassumed. Now he returns as a sword: wormless, resurrected, and without the strength of his brood. There is no greater heresy than this. His sisters know it. He knows it. And so, in this, Oryx wishes to begin again.

    Third Chest[edit]

    • Eris Morn: Tell me, Deputy Commander, do the Taken yearn for their sovereign? Does the voice of Oryx still resonate with them?
    • Sloane: They don't miss him, if that's what you're asking. Taken psychology is more like… a giant empty hangar. Anything you shout into it bounces around for a long time before it fades. Oryx's voice included.
    • Eris Morn: Reverberations propagating through nihility. Fitting.
    • Sloane: Sure. But they can't differentiate those orders from their own thoughts. If there is such a thing.
    • Eris Morn: To those without an interior world, all ideation must be seen as external. Even that which comes from within.

    Hive Gods Memories[edit]

    III: The Oath

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Xivu Arath: I am Xi Ro, youngest daughter of the dead king. I will take back my Osmium Court and kill the traitor Taox. On my left eye I swear vengeance.
    • Memory of Savathûn: I am Sathona, middle daughter of the dead king. I will take back my home and eat the mother jelly. I will raise my spawn on the corpse of the Helium King. On my right eye I promise this.
    • Memory of Oryx: I am Aurash, first daughter of the dead king. I will chase my father's last screamed warning. I will know what changed the motion of our moons. If the end of the world is coming, I will understand why. On my center eye, I swear it. I will understand.
    VI: Sisters

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Savathûn: Oath-bearing siblings, we are five years old. For two years we've worked to repair this ancient ship and understand its systems. I am almost too old for the mother jelly, and the knights who killed our father are surely dying of age. We three will die here, in exile. Taox will outlive us. And Aurash, brilliant-eyed Aurash, you will die of old age long before you have proof of your God-Wave, or any way to stop it.
    VIII: Leviathan

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Xivu Arath: Our lives are short and desperate. If that's the way the world's supposed to be, I won't have it! If people like Taox are supposed to win, I won't let them! I'll beat the world until it changes! I'll kill anything in the way!
    VIII: Leviathan

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Oryx: We live short, hard lives. We die in the dark. The storm above us will never end. And soon the God-Wave will take us all. Above us there are only stormjoys, monsters, and moons of apocalypse. Let us go down, down, where we may discover truth, some power to avenge ourselves upon our betrayers, some hope of survival.
    VIII: Leviathan

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Savathûn: Who will you trust? The voice that wants us to live and suffer, as we have lived and suffered? The Leviathan that offers no hope against Taox or the world-wave? Or the plain, honest worm? Let us see where its whisper leads us, Aurash. Let us go deeper, Xi Ro! Let us dive, O sisters mine.
    XXI: an incision

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Savathûn: Auryx my brother and king, I have studied the wounds cut by the Worm our God. Also I have studied the manner of your death and return. These two things are the same, for they are predicated on death and the passage through cut spaces. Let us practice the sword logic until we are sharp. We may then cut our own wounds and step through.
    • Memory of Xivu Arath: Sister, I am already sharp, look, my sword cuts into another space.
    XXII: The High War

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Oryx: I shall establish a court, and whoever comes into this court may challenge me. My court will be the High War. It will be a killing ground and a school of the sword logic we have learned from our gods.
    XXIII: fire without fuel

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Oryx:: My worm grows fat and hungry. I feed it with whole worlds. My astronomers tell me they can sense the Deep Itself, and that we are conquering our way towards it. I think joy and sorrow will be the same thing soon. Like love and death.
    XXIV: THE SCREAM

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Oryx: Our might shatters entire species. We inhale the smoke of their burning. This is our compact with the Worm our God — the worm makes us mighty. But as we wield this might, our worm's hunger expands. If we fail to feed it, it will devour us from within.
XXVI: star by star by star

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Savathûn:I am at my end. I plot and plan. But I cannot gather enough bloodshed to feed my worm. And the harder I try, the hungrier it becomes.
    • Memory of Xivu Arath: I slaughter and kill, but the harder I fight, the more my worm demands. I too am at my end.
    • Memory of Oryx: The Ecumene war angels have killed me so many times that I dare not go out into the universe, lest I need my might to protect myself. My worm chews at my soul in hunger.
    XXXIV: More beautiful to know

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Oryx: Once, long ago, I killed Xivu Arath on her war moon, and she blew up the whole moon to kill with me her. She was laughing in joy. I laughed too. A whole moon! A whole moon. It was a waste of a moon, but it taught me how to save myself from exploding worlds, which was necessary to fight the Ecumene. I love mighty Xivu more than a moon loves the tide. I'll kill her for this. Over and over, forever and ever.
    XXXV: This Love Is War

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Xivu Arath: When Oryx looks upon you, you feel that you may vanish if he looks away. The crest of Oryx's skull is as long as an arm. In the course of its life, a thought moves from one end to the other. Upon his crest I have painted a line in my blood, so that he will remember me.
    XXXV: This Love Is War

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Xivu Arath: Oryx, my brother, is the bravest thing I know. Upon Fundament he learned that we were the natural prey of the universe, the most frail and desperate of things. He thought about this carefully and he found a way to fix it. He made us strong. He will lead us into eternity.
    XLIV: strict proof eternal

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Savathûn: I don't have a strict proof yet, you know. This thing we believe…that we're liberating the universe by devouring it, that we're cutting out the rot, that we're on course to join the final shape… I haven't found a strict, eternal proof. We might yet be wrong.
    • Memory of Oryx: Sister, it's us. We're the proof. We are the Hive. If we last forever, we prove it. And if something more ruthless conquers us, then the proof is sealed.
    XLVII: Apocalypse Refrains

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Oryx: This is our message to the things that we will kill. A species which believes that a good existence can be invented through games of civilization and through laws of conduct is doomed by that belief. They will die in terror. The lawless and the ruthless will drag them down to die. The universe will erase their monuments.
    XLIX: Forever And A Blade

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Oryx: I considered returning to Fundament. Learning what became of the God-Wave, and the Tungsten Monoliths, and the continents which were all that remained of my people's primal home. But I know what became of all that. It became me. I am the heir of Fundament, the immortal descendant of those ten-year krill. I asked a question: how can we live in the universe long enough to understand it? And I learned the answer, which is written here in this book. I learned that I had to become most ruthless of all.
    VII—Xivu Arath—Deathless

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Xivu Arath: I am war, and my throne is deathless. Come. Cut the outer curtain of my fortress, and it will open its new eye in a bloodless laceration. Cut further to see inside its walls: the yellow fat, the purple viscera, the teeming rust-cut capillaries. These are the colors of war. THESE ARE THE COLORS OF MY COURT.
    VII-Xivu Arath Deathless

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Xivu Arath: My gates open to the most life. The swollen fountains run with blood and burst with arterial spray. The paths are paved with small white teeth. They gnash beneath each footfall, their roots raw and alive. Look! I have raised cathedrals made of flesh. When a breeze caresses them, they blush and contract, fine hairs sensing the change. They are worshipped with bare touch. MY THRONE SHUDDERS WITH JOY.
    VII-Xivu Arath Deathless

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Xivu Arath: The halls of my palace are echoing throats, slick and filled with breath. Its windows are glazed with skin, opalescent and alive, latticed with blue-black veins. The seats of my throne are fashioned with living bones. Break them, and you will see their raw, red marrow. Break them, and the wet pith will writhe. Two are knotted with scars: broken and reformed, broken and reformed. Look out from the terrace and see the worlds we will devour to sustain us. It is a mouth, yawning black and wide and hungering. It is open in screams of base need.
    VIII—Savathûn—Swords and Lanterns

The fireteam discovers a memory of the Hive Gods.

    • Memory of Savathûn: She could never quite understand it… Someone as mighty as Oryx brought down by liars, his bloodline destroyed, his corpse left to desiccate in Saturn's orbit. Xivu Arath actually believed that Dreadnought of his was unassailable, but Oryx knew that he had limits. More than once, he took the power of our deaths to defeat something stronger than himself. She's just bitter she wasn't there to die for him again.
