Tomb of Elders is an Destiny 2 episodic activity introduced with Episode: Revenant, where Guardians return to the Prison of Elders and fight through a gauntlet of challenges and enemies set in motion by the prison's rampant Warden Servitor. In addition to its base counterpart, the activity also has an enhanced, replayable version called Contest of Elders which increases in difficulty and rewards the more runs are completed.

Overview[edit]

The Tomb of Elders is similar in structure to Riven's Lair while Contest of Elders is similar to The Coil with the difference being the Warden’s Judgment mechanic. This mechanic influences the frequency in which higher-health combatants will spawn in any encounter and the amount of loot players will obtain after completing a loop. Completing bonus objectives in any encounter will increase stacks of the Warden's Favor buff and decrease stacks of the Warden Punishment debuff, but also increases the frequency of those higher-health combatants in the next encounter and activates traps within the arena. Conversely, failing bonus objectives in any encounter will increase stacks of the Warden's Punishment debuff and decrease stacks of the Warden Favor buff but also decreases the frequency of those higher-health combatants in the next encounter. Both Warden's Favor and Warden's Punishment can stack up to 3 times. The fireteam that holds any stacks of Warden's Favor will be able to skip the initial cryopod encounter after completing a loop and allow them to open a treasure chamber at the end of the Contest of Elders activity. The fireteam that holds any stacks of Warden's Punishment or the Warden’s Judgment buff will be forced to complete the initial cryopod encounter after completing a loop. At the start of an encounter, a random modifier will be applied to all players and within the Contest of Elders, revive tokens will appear, where players must kill a Model Prisoner to earn more.

Kell's Vengeance[edit]

This variant cannot be played solo. After loading into the activity, all players will receive a Warden's Gaze debuff, which will cause a wipe if the fireteam fails to complete the bonus objective within the time limit. After completing the first 2 encounters, players will enter a boss fight with Skolas. During this encounter, one player in the fireteam will receive a Devouring Essence debuff that last for 30 seconds and kills them if the timer expires unless it is passed to another player. After that debuff is acquired by another player, the player who last had it will receive another debuff called Drained of Essence that lasts for 25 seconds. The player with that debuff won’t be able to pick up the Devouring Essence debuff from another player carrying it until the timer expires. A Revenant Baron will spawn and when it’s defeated and its Revenant Totem is destroyed, a mote will drop near where the Revenant Totem was destroyed. The player who is carrying the Devouring Essence will only be able to pick up the mote and when they do, it will become the Enhanced Essence debuff. The player carrying that debuff must deposit it into the Servitor emitting a red vapor cloud. After doing this 3 times, players will be able to DPS Skolas. During the DPS phase, a bunch of Dark Ether with a magenta color will appear, travel towards Skolas, and heal him if it’s not shot beforehand. After the DPS phase ends, High Revenants will spawn and leave behind the same Dark Ether seen during DPS when they are defeated. After Skolas is defeated, players will able to enter the treasure chamber and acquire the Renunciation ship when completed for the first time.

Reach the Security Room[edit]

Central Airlock, Derelict Prison of Elders

First Tomb Run
  • Variks: Guardian. After so many years, so much bloodshed, Variks regrets we must return to the—
  • Warden AI: Prison of Elders welcomes you. Impress your Warden, yes?
  • Eido: Variks? Who is that?
  • Variks: A… malfunction. Confused Servitor from years past. Variks begs your pardon.
  • Warden AI: Round: [ERROR] Kill or be killed.
  • Variks: Variks does not sound like— [chitters] Variks will fix this. For now, we continue, yes?
First Contest Run
  • Variks: Variks detects many life signs within the prison, Guardian. Not all are prisoners. Nor are they Eliksni. Shadow Legion, Hive… and worse. Do they chase Fikrul's power? Or make alliances?
  • Act 2
  • Eido: So many innocent Eliksni dragged into this place… They must be terrified.
  • The Crow: Hey, we'll find them. The Guardian's making good progress.
  • Eido: Yes, but… the prison is so vast. Cells upon cells…
  • The Crow: That Servitor's not on anyone’s side but its own. Chances are it'll slow down Fikrul's people too.
  • Or alternatively

    • Eido: I hope we can find some worthwhile ingredients on our way through here.
    • Mithrax: Variks has told me you'll find the tomb rich in resources. Awoken tech… prisoner effects… bodies.
    • Eido: How did he ever bring himself to run this place?
    • Mithrax: Our people took many paths in the Drift. His led here, for a time.
    • Eido: Do you think he regrets it?
    • Mithrax: Ask him yourself. And if you hear his mandibles move… Consider the answer carefully.

    Or alternatively

    • Eido: Father tells me these… contests were your idea.
    • Variks: Yes… Awoken love a good duel. And House Judgment was often called to settle matters of honor. Variks thought… these games might bind our peoples. Join our traditions. Purchase peace, with sacrifice.
    • Eido: And… did they?
    • Variks: Hm… yes. Awoken and Eliksni joined in bloodshed. And in woe.

    Or alternatively

    • Mithrax: Daughter… I have a task for you.
    • Eido: A task? Of course, Father.
    • Mithrax: Aid the Slayer Baron. Keep a wary eye on Variks as they move through the prison. This matter of the Warden… His continued failure to wrest control of the Prison… He is up to something.
    • Eido: Father, I don't think — um. Y—You're right. I'll stay alert.

    Or alternatively

    • Mithrax: How fare your scouts, Variks?
    • Variks: Misraakskel refers to Spider's scouts? They perform adequately. The Warden thwarts us when he can. But while the Guardian competes, we are able to make up ground.
    • Mithrax: This Servitor is simple-minded.
    • Variks: Well… predictable, at least.

    Or alternatively

    • Eido: Variks, why did you give the Warden Servitor your voice?
    • Variks: Long ago, Variks gave instructions… to uphold continuity of command if Variks was ever called away. A buried protocol, forgotten. Variks did not expect the Servitor to…
    • Eido: To have an identity crisis?
    • Variks: Yes… unfortunate.
    Post-Act 2
  • Eido: Fikrul has vanished. We haven't seen any signs of recent transports coming in, either. They must be gearing up for something new.
  • Mithrax: We remain a step behind them.
  • Eido: I share your frustration, Father. There must be something we overlooked.
  • Mithrax: Look harder.
  • Or alternatively

    • Mithrax: I hope you understand what it is we risk. We rely upon the City's trust.
    • Eramis: Eliksni must rely on each other, Misraakskel. Don't count on the rest for long.
    • Mithrax: [growls] Impressive hypocrisy, given where you stand.
    • Eramis: You're right. You probably shouldn't count on Variks, either.

    Or alternatively

    • Eramis:: This place was a rancid nest even before it was a tomb.
    • Eido: You've spent time here?
    • Eramis: I've killed there. I would take a hundred solar cycles in a City age in exchange for one of those days.
    • Eido: I'm sorry.
    • Eramis: I'm not. It taught me not to lose. Something I've forgotten of late.

    Or alternatively

    • Variks: Fikrul seeks that which wounds us most deeply. Names from our past. Foes we believed defeated. [chitters] Variks does not believe Fikrul will trouble himself with the nameless cast-offs that remain here. But… the Warden will. Hm.

    Or alternatively

    • Mithrax: Any signs of Skolas?
    • Variks: Yes. Throughout the prison. He is cunning, difficult to pin down. Still, he is confined to this facility, for now. That is good, yes?
    • Mithrax: Very. We have the option of incinerating him from orbit.
    • Variks: If Variks could propose a few alternatives…

    Or alternatively

    • Eido: Drifter told me this Warden Servitor was supposedly destroyed.
    • Variks: There are procedures in place should the Servitor sustain damage… It may have slowly repaired itself.
    • Eido: Maybe Fikrul raised it from the dead.
    • Variks: Please… do not make such jests.

    Or alternatively

    • Variks: It is… strange to see you here, my Prince.
    • The Crow: I bet. But letķs stay focused on the present: I heard you're dealing with some old friends.
    • Variks: Skolas is friend to none. He has only hatred for company.
    • The Crow: Well, let's try and get things under control before he starts taking that out on the captives. After you, Guardian.
    Post-Act 3
  • Variks: The Echo is far out of reach, now. The Dread, at least, will seek power elsewhere. Shadow Legion are… single-minded. Harder to discourage. And Hive… Variks believes they enjoy the fights for their own sake.
  • Or alternatively

    • Mithrax: Once we have chased the final traces of Fikrul's forces from this place, I will deliver the prison to Marakel. It is my hope this occasion will mark a new, formal alliance between Eliksni and Awoken. And the beginning of… new traditions.

    Or alternatively

    • Eido: We're making good progress at clearing out the prison. The hard part will be convincing the Warden Servitor to let go.
    • Variks: Hmm. Variks will continue his efforts…
    • Eido: We'll just keep at it in the meantime. Right, Guardian?
    Kell's Vengeance
  • Variks: Skolas is a dangerous enemy, Guardian. A dangerous ally, too. Perhaps this is why Fikrul leaves him to the Prison. What remains of his mind? His mad hubris? Set forth your challenge, Guardian. If anything is left of Skolas - he will answer.
  • Defeat Combatants[edit]

The fireteam delves depper into the prison where they engage with enemy combatants.

    First Tomb Run
    • Warden AI: Opponent identified. Hibernation shutdown sequence in progress.
    • Variks: Opponent…? The Warden is pulling prisoners from cold storage.
    • Eido: They're still alive in there?
    • Variks: Not for much longer.
    First Contest Run
  • Mithrax: Variks. Have you regained control of the command center?
  • Variks: Ah… No, Misraakskel. The Warden Servitor has—
  • Mithrax: No excuses. Find Fikrul. Let nothing get in your way.
  • Variks: Of course, Misraakskel…
  • Kell's Vengeance
  • Skolas: [unintelligible chatter]
  • Variks: Good he knows you are here. Ignore his insults, Guardian. Skolas is only a pawn. His Wolves are scattered, his dream of Mars long buried. Now to his final fight.
  • The fireteam defeats all of the enemy combatants and progresses to the Lockup.

    First Tomb Run
    • Warden AI: You fought, you won. Your treasure awaits.
    • Variks: The Warden withdraws. So must we.
    • Eido: We took part in this… blood sport. What now?
    • Variks: Servitor interference was… unexpected. But Variks will be better prepared. We must push deeper into the Prison. Decipher Fikrul’s purpose. Prevent revenant Scorn from overrunning the Reef.
    • Eido: I should send Petra an update. Good work so far, Guardian.
    • Variks: Your report — Variks' involvement is minimal, yes?
    First Contest Run
  • Warden AI: Victory. Well earned.
  • Mithrax: I see your Warden Servitor is entertained. But our quarry slips your snare.
  • Variks: We close on him by the hour, Misraakskel. Fikrul's servants fill old cells with captives. He must arrive soon to alter them. When he arrives, we strike. Trust Variks, yes?
  • Act 2
  • Mithrax: A spectacle of blood, for the benefit of this system's rightful rulers. Perhaps once I am Kell, I will return here, and watch my enemies devour one another.
  • The Crow: Let's put a pin in that one for now, big guy. Hey, Guardian. Got multiple scans going and a clean-up crew locking things down behind you. Good work in there. We'll let you know what we find.
  • Or alternatively

    • Eido: You're the reigning champion, Slayer Baron.
    • Variks: The Warden finds you entertaining. It will seek to challenge you further.
    • Eido: Another strange admirer of yours.
    • Variks: The Guardian is very impressive, yes.

    Or alternatively

    • The Crow: Good to work with the House of Light again.
    • Mithrax: Yes. We appreciate the aid of the Hunter Vanguard.
    • The Crow: Of course. Youķre as much a part of the City as anyone. That said, I'm leaving the tonics to you, Guardian. You smell like jet fuel and basil.
    Or alternatively
    Post-Act 2
    • Mithrax: My undefeated Slayer Baron… I see a great future before you. A Kell does not share power — but you never sought to rule before. Together, we could crack open the cosmos, and feast upon the marrow of the stars. [inhales sharply] I… I… Guardian? What were we…? You've uh, finished, then? Good. The others wait for you.

    Or alternatively

    • Eido: This must be hard for you, Eramis…
    • Eramis: Watching the Guardian jump through hoops for the Warden's amusement? I do not mind.
    • Eido: Well, no, I mean—
    • Eramis: I know what you meant. You're still wrong.

    Or alternatively

    • Eido: Eramis, did you know Skolas?
    • Eramis: Of course. His name was cursed and praised in equal measure. He did love his speeches. He strove for the greatest of heights, failed spectacularly, and ended his days as a mad animal in a little cage. Something for your father to think about. But you're asking if we shared words or loyalty… No. He remembered our world before the Whirlwind, and he cursed the City to the last. That's all that matters.

    • Mithrax: Shipstealer. My daughter has come to trust you.
    • Eramis: And now you're here to threaten me?
    • Mithrax: You already know my threats. Her actions have bound her fate to yours. I ask only that you… consider this.

    Or alternatively

    • Eramis: How does it feel to have your Servitor throw your own words in your face?
    • Variks: We betrayed ourselves, each other, for many years. Variks denies nothing.
    • Eramis: No. You've given up on the title of Kell and gone right back to cozying up with those stronger than you. Try and claim a little honor for yourself before the end, Variks. It's hard to watch you scrabbling around in the dirt.

    Or alternatively

    • Eramis: On the subject of old captives… What will you do when Queen Mara calls in that favor with the Vanguard?
    • Variks: Marakel's wrath springs from injustice. Variks has wronged many. When Judgment arrives, Variks will accept it. For now — Variks will support the House of Light.
    • Eramis: A final mark in the sand?
    • Variks: Variks hopes to be remembered well. Does not everyone?

    Or alternatively

    • Eido: Skolas… he called himself Kell of Kells, once.
    • Variks: And last Dreg of Dregs, too. What troubles you, Eido?
    • Eido: So many called him delusional, because he believed in the prophecy. What if we're going about this the wrong way?
    • Variks: Skolas thought his own bitter cruelty the mark of a Kell, no matter his misdeeds. Each failure left him maddened, but never wiser. Misraakskel does not seek vain glory. He loves his people. Even in illness, he seeks to protect his House. Our hope for him is not delusion.
    • Eido: Thank you, Variks.
    Post-Act 3
  • The Crow: You know, Variks, I can probably put in a good word with Mara.
  • Variks: Variks does not think Marakel would… appreciate.
  • The Crow: I wouldn't be saying anything I don't believe. Don't give up hope just yet. Besides, it's not about a clean slate. Just about finding a way forward.
  • Variks: Variks understands. Variks thanks you, Prince.
  • The Crow: Oh, let's not do that.
  • Or alternatively

    • Eido: You never let me watch the fights… To think I used to resent that. I have a hard enough time with the Last City's Crucible matches.
    • Mithrax: We do not need to preserve all old the old ways. Our Houses too, molt and grow. The House of Judgment will be a little wiser for its troubles.

    Or alternatively

    • Eido: Crow, do you know how many prisoners remain here?
    • The Crow: Not sure. There are a lot of cryopods to account for, but not all of them made it through intact. Why? You aren't going to bust them all out, are you?
    • Eido: Hey…
    • The Crow: Hey, yourself. There's Vex in there.
    Kell's Vengeance

The fireteam enters the into vault in the Central Airlock to retrieve their rewards.

    • Skolas: [eerie laugh]
    • Warden AI: Success, Guardian. Success. You bested Skolas. What follows?
    • Variks: The fool machine is correct. You should be proud, Guardian. The Wolf Kell is felled once more. Yet, Variks worries. Skolas does not go quietly… Variks will study these bio-signs, Guardian… Perhaps it is nothing. Enjoy your spoils, yes?
