The Dire Taken[1] are a faction of Taken that began to appear on the Dreadnaught following the events of the Revenant Uprising. They are predominantly identified by tendrils emanating from their backs, their skin peeling back from their eyes and unique abilities compared to normal Taken.

History[edit]

"THE KING IS AGONY: His absence worse.
We look to the dark, we look for another'
One to raise the blade of shaping.
SING IN THE DARK a song of waiting, a patience song
Pluck at the hair-strung harp. Cry out to the depths.
Sing until an answer comes.
THE ANSWER COMES. THE ANSWER COMES.
WE WILL IT: THE ANSWER COMES.
"
— First Song of the Taken

After the destruction of the Witness, and with Oryx, the Taken King long dead at the hands of the Guardian, the remaining Taken aboard the Dreadnaught were left aimless and lost. Mourning the loss of their King, they began to sing a series of hymns into the Darkness, seeking to summon a new master who might command them.[2]

Eventually, the Taken's calls were answered by an unknown entity within the Ascendant Realm, apparently having manifested as a direct result of their repeated entreaties for leadership. The Taken excitedly pledged themselves to this new force, declaring it to be their new "will, guide, and king", and imploring it to take command of them.[3]

Some time later, the Subjugator Keit'Ehr, first of the Dread created by the Witness within the Pale Heart using the Traveler's Light, came to the Dreadnaught in search of the Echo that had made its way to the derelict craft and hidden itself somewhere within. Upon arriving within the High War, Keit'Ehr noted that the Taken King was dead and his court empty, but it was nonetheless able to hear a "silent voice" coming from the depths of the Ascendant Realm. Intuiting that this voice belonged to the new power the Taken had called forth into being, Keit'Ehr pledged itself to its service, and called upon its fellow Dread to join it aboard the Dreadnaught.[4]

Shortly after the end of the Revenant Uprising, the Dire Taken arrived in the European Dead Zone, to protect an anchor-like artifact radiating Taken energies.[5]
