Stormjoys were non-sapient predatory creatures native to the gas giant Fundament.[2][3][4]
Overview[edit]
Described as "living clouds," Stormjoys would drift over land masses—creating fog from their exhalations and generating lightning from passage through Fundament's atmosphere—and dangle glistening, translucent tentacles tipped with "bait stars" to attract and catch prey items.[2] The light their stars emitted would paralyze their prey, and their tentacles were apparently semi-autonomous.[3] Stormjoys were named as one of the chief terrors the Krill faced by Aurash when addressing the Leviathan.[4]
They were sometimes used by old Krill to commit suicide. Brave knights would seek after their bait stars, possibly as a rite of initiation or to prove themselves; Xi Ro in particular obtained six,[2] and later used them to cover her and her sisters' escape from the Helium Drinkers.[5] During the acquisition of Xi Ro's fourth bait-star, Aurash was momentarily captivated by the Stormjoy's light and was rescued by her younger sister, who tackled and knocked her out of harms way.[3]
Yul characterized the Traveler and its ideals of peace and order as the bait stars of the Sky.[6][7]
