- "These relentless thieves seem driven by desperation and rage. They are crafty, but they usually give up their cover with their clattering and hissing. Most seem outfitted with some kind of shock dagger and pistol, and as far as we can gather, they seem to only have two arms, while other Fallen have four."
- — Bungie.net description.[1]
Dregs, known as Drekhs in Eliksni language, are the lowest-ranking class of Fallen warrior[1] and cling to the bottom rung of Fallen society.[2]
Overview[edit]
- "Don't underestimate a cutthroat, or you'll get your throat cut."
- — Grimoire description.
Less disciplined than Vandals or Captains, they often give away their position with their chattering. They are typically armed with a Shock Dagger or two, Shock Pistol, and Shock Grenade. They are rarely armed with a Shrapnel Launcher.
Because of their low rank, Dregs have two arms, whereas other higher ranks of Fallen have four. This is because they have had the other set cut off as part of a ritual of humiliation and obedience. Dregs seek to prove their worth through selfless aggression. Only a few will survive to gain promotion and regrow their limbs. Their suicidal bravery is fueled by ambition and shame.[2] They are also kept motivated by the myth of the "star-catcher", a fictional Dreg who rose to claim ten thousand stars with ten thousand arms.[3]
It's not unheard of for higher-ranking Fallen to be demoted to Dregs if they have failed their superiors in some way, if they are not killed outright.[4][5]
Gameplay[edit]
Dregs are a common cannon fodder-type enemy encountered when fighting Fallen-Houses. They are usually fielded in large groups and sent forth to catch enemy fire or overwhelm them with numbers.
The Dreg is able to carry a large variety of Fallen equipment into battle. They most frequently use a semi-automatic Shock Pistol they carry to their right hand, which they fire in 3- to 4-round bursts. The bullets fired are oval in shape, deal arc-damage and possess a slight travel-time which can be easily avoided by strafing in the opposite direction of where the bullet flies. They also frequently wield a Shock Dagger in their left hand, which they swing towards a target as soon as they enter their melee-range. Both aren't necessarily powerful weapons, but can prove deadly in large numbers. They are also equipped with Shock Grenades, which they throw in an arc. The Shock Grenade needs to be armed, sticks to the first surfaces or vehicle it touches and takes roughly four seconds to explode, dealing arc-damage in a small radius.
Rarely, Dregs are given Shrapnel Launchers, making them deadly in close-range encounters but loosing them access to a Shock Dagger due to it being a two-handed weapon. Dregs wielding these will usually fight very defensively however. High-ranking ones sometimes have Molten Welders giving them an artillery-weapon with a slight AOE but long travel-time making them the most dangerous.
Dregs will also frequently pilot Pikes are quite skilled drivers, using the bust-fire and booster to devastating effect.
In Destiny, Dregs can go into battle with paired Shock Daggers, though this is usually in missions instead of patrol. They would rush Guardians to slice at them with both knifes. In Destiny 2, they would be replaced in sprit with Wretches, similar to Stealth Vandals were replaced by Marauders.
Dregs are a weak unit but should not be underestimated, since they can wield a large variety of weapons and assume multiple roles on the battlefield. Their tactics incorporate acting in groups, normally spawning in squads ranging from two up to nine Dregs together with other Fallen-Units where they take a fodder or Fire-Support-Role depending on the mission or area. They usually don't rush the player down and remain defensive, making use of their leader's presence and cover where they hide behind, occasionally peeking out to fire a few bursts from their weapon. They are able to fire their pistol on the move and prefer to fight in mid to close-ranged combat. If one gets too close, they can get desperate and rush towards the player, trying to hit them with their dagger and swiftly flee by stepping backwards to the nearest cover, area where they are assigned to or higher-ranked unit. They also exhibit this behavior if a higher-ranked unit in the group is killed, searching for the next safer spot. They throw their grenades at targets behind cover or those possessing high health. Higher-Ranks can wield more dangerous weapons like the Shrapnel Launcher or Molten Welder. Both make them act more defensive and let them dish out more damage to the player or enemy factions from varying ranges. They are rare and few however but should be dispatched first.
Dregs can be easily suppressed, staggering them by hitting any of their body-parts be it leg, torso or arms is an effective strategy. Even behind cover, they need to peek out with their head to first search their target which leaves them vulnerable or peek out to shoot their weapon. They are also vulnerable while throwing a shock grenade. Their critical-spot is the head where they take the most damage. All their weapon-shots can be dodged by guardians since all of the weapon-configurations they wield (except for melee) possess a travel-time. In large numbers, their leaders or higher ranks should be prioritized. Usually, Dregs need very large numbers to be a threat to the player except when they are driving Pikes. In a vehicle, Dregs are hard to hit and dish out large amounts of damage. For Pike Dregs specifically, high-explosive or precise weaponry should be prioritized to hopefully kill the pilot with either AOE-Damage or a precision-shot.
