Kepler is a location in the Oort Cloud. It serves as the Destination in The Edge of Fate expansion.

Overview[edit]

Kepler is a small, rocky planetoid with a breathable atmosphere and a life-covered surface. It is inhabited by the Aionians, a group of Humans who came to the world at some time before or during the Golden Age and have remained isolated from the rest of humanity ever since. Kepler is approximately 1.7 light years away from the Sol System.[1]

Kepler is permeated by concentrated dark matter, which a local species of slime-mold like organism has evolved to feed upon.[citation needed] It also features a gravitational singularity located somewhere on or below its surface, which the Aionians revere as the "Holy Anomaly".[citation needed]

History[edit]

At some point prior to its discovery by humanity, Kepler was visited by III, the member of the Nine associated with Earth, who used their dark matter to manifest a black hole beneath the surface of the planetoid.[citation needed] III would later come to be known as the "Holy Anomaly" by the Aionians who eventually colonized the planetoid.[2]

Discovery and Colonization[edit]

"They called it the Kepler Object, for the father of astronomy, and it was impossible by all other laws, but the data was what the data was, and so it was let to be. Rather than manipulate data, the predecessors of AION sought explanation."
Tenets of AION

Kepler was discovered prior to the Golden Age by the AION Initiative. The planetoid defied all known physical laws, which drove the members of the Initiative to understand it, passing the mystery of the Kepler object to each generation. When the AION Initiative had the capability to travel to Kepler, they traveled and established a colony there to study the planetoid, where they would learn of the Anomaly deep within it.[3]

When the Collapse came, the AION Initiative colony would be cut off from Earth, and would only learn of the cataclysm 1.7 years later due to the light-speed delay.[1] Despite this, the colony survived, with the members eventually calling themselves the Aionians, and continued to study Kepler and its mysteries.[citation needed]

Skirmish on Kepler[edit]

Many years after, Fallen of the House of Exile would come to Kepler in search of a home away from the violence on Earth. There, they would establish peaceful relations with the Aionians, exchanging knowledge and tales of each other and their cultures.[4][5] Later, the Aionians would attempt to help the Exiles to synthesize Ether. However, the large concentration of dark matter on Kepler led to the Ether becoming contaminated.[6] However, one of the Exiles, Levaszk, would claim to hear voices from an entity he called "The Giver", who in actuality was III. He would take command of the Exiles, utilizing an ability given to him by breathing in the dark matter tainted Ether to see and speak through the other Exiles, and lead them against the Aionians, cutting them off from the Singularity and intending on using it to ascend.[7][8][9]

In response to an invitation from the Nine,[citation needed] Maya Sundaresh arrived on Kepler in search of III, who she attempted to persuade using the Echo of Command to exchange the Golden Age-era Earth with its present-day version, using the Nine's unique ability to send objects through time. However, III was unable to comply, as it could only send objects forward in time, and so Maya killed III by pulling it to enter three-dimensional space in retaliation.[10][11] The massive corpse of III remained beneath the surface of Kepler, with the singularity at its core now posing an existential risk to the rest of the Sol System in the event that it might destabilize.[9]

Trivia[edit]

  • Johannes Kepler was a 17th-century German astronomer, mathematician, astrologer and natural philosopher best known for his laws of planetary motion, which described the motion of the planets of the Solar System around the Sun. He is also sometimes described as the "father of science fiction" for his novel Somnium, which was regarded by Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov as one of the earliest works in the genre.
    • While there is no planet or other body named "Kepler" in the real-world Solar System, a number of exoplanets discovered by the NASA Kepler Space Telescope bear the label "Kepler" as part of their designation.
