Transcript[edit]
(Mission begins)
Caldera, Kepler
- Ikora: Lodi, before we get further… the woman you knew. What was her name?
- Lodi: Are you sure you need to know that, Ikora?
- Ikora: I want to know who I'm fighting for.
- Lodi: You're fighting for the most fearless person I know. And when we get to that god, you're gonna ask them why they killed… Dr. Nella Davis.
- The Guardian navigates through vast cavern passages coated with vast amounts of slime mold as they head for the singularity, eventually making it to the Assimilated Easement and encountering Exile forces.
- Once they arrive at The Singularity, they experience another earthquake with some dark matter distortion.
- Orin: The transfer was successful. My senses are beginning to settle. I feel smaller.
- Drifter: Couldn't help but count while you all were calling the Nine, but, uh… where was III?
- Orin: Absent… and… I remember I know why. I'm supposed to tell you something.
- Ikora: You have your chisel, Orin. Use it, and find us clarity.
- The Guardian takes out a few Choral Vex and descends into a hole using Matterspark.
- Ikora: The Vex and the singularity… Maya's goal has always been to return to the Golden Age, but a black hole won't get her there.
- Lodi: But maybe a member of the Nine could. She came to make a deal with III. Trade the current age for the Golden Age?
- Orin: A trade like that wouldn't be possible. The Nine can bring anything forward in time, but nothing ever goes backward. III would have told her as much.
- Ikora: Maya's Echo means "no" isn't an answer.
- Lodi: This sounds like it isn't about simple refusal, though. It's a matter of physical impossibility.
- Orin: When Maya spoke to us in the gorge, she said she did what she came here to do. But we're not back in the Golden Age. What did she try to do?
- Ikora: The Echo can compel, but it cannot force the impossible. We can't worry about this now, Guardian. We need the Archon out of the way. Then we'll deal with Maya.
- The Guardian utilizes the Relocator, Matterspark and Mattermorph to navigate Vex structures. They take out more Choral Vex forces, led by the Crazed Mind, Touched by the Singularity. They manage to destroy it and carry on.
- The Archon: The Giver must not be approached. Exiles! Prevent the Deathless advance!
- Lodi: Is anyone else f-freezing? Muscles are locked, I… I feel awful. Something's wrong. Orin?
- Orin: I felt that, too, the day after I quit… joints locking up, frozen head to toe. Something was very, very wrong. The Archon is hiding the truth from his people. Drifter, you need to bring your ship close. I'm remembering part of the message I was meant to deliver. Ready the Derelict. Bring the Haul.
- Drifter: What? Why?
- Orin: Because I'm supposed to tell you now.
- The Guardian faces Exile forces and uses Matterspark to open the way forward. They encounter more Exile forces and feel annother earthquake with dark matter distortion
- Drifter: I'm nearly in eyesight — there's a lot of Exiles on the ground.
- The Archon: More than any number can count. Annihilate one and three will roar in my voice. The Giver and its answers are unreachable. Exiles, take down the Deathless ship!
- 'Drifter: Taking heavy fire!
- The Guardian navigates Fallen arcitecture and laser grids using Matterspark, Mattermorph and the Relocator. They eventually encounter a large Heavy Shank labeled Fury of the Archon. Using charged Matterspark blasts and nearby cannons to disable its shield, the Guardian is able to destroy it.
- Drifter: Whole damn flood of Exiles just ran outside! Archon's not bluffing! Can't get close to whatever the hell that is! I'm taking too much fire!
- Orin: No. This is how it happens, isn't it?
- Lodi: I don't need to breathe. Ikora, why don't I need to breathe? Am I— am I dying?!
- Ikora: Hold on, Louis. We're almost there.
- The Guardian navigates narrow passages that opens into a vast expanse. There, they see a large circular with long tentacles and a small black hole at the body's center and an Exile Ketch in the distance.
- Orin: My chisel is sharp; the message is clear. I understand what was forgotten: III is dead.
- Ikora: The Nine that invited us here… is dead?
- Orin: I'm so sorry. It was like a block in my mind — the Nine wouldn't let me remember until now.
- Ikora: They brought us here to tell us something! They rearranged our entire lives… for what?!
- Lodi: There has to be a reason. What type of message are we supposed to hear from the dead?
- The Archon: The end of endings has been revealed. See how the blood of the Giver feeds the singularity.
- Orin: They're using III’s body to widen the black hole. They made the singularity — we need to hurry before we're overtaken!
- The Archon: Drain, drain the Giver! Devour its flesh-beyond-flesh, my Exiles, coast the infinite. And you, Deathless, I will cut you down long before the singularity grows large enough to swallow you.
- Ikora: The Archon is the only thing between us and the answers we deserve. Bury him, Guardian!
- The Guardian navigates floating rock and detritus of objects pulled forward in time suspended in dark matter to reach a large chunk of Kepler rock where the Ketch and a pod covered in slime mold are stationed.
- The Archon: The Grand Design speaks of the end, dear ones. All of this is as foretold. It is why we prepared, why we readied our bodies, conglomerated our minds.
- The Guardian dispatches Exile forces.
- Ghost: The Archon is inside that thing! It appears to be drawing power from the Ketch above. We'll need to power it down to get him out. Guardian, let's get to that Ketch!
- Using Matterspark to charge the portal, the Guardian boards the Ketch, takes out the Exiles on deck and uses Mattersprk to navigate narrow spaces along the bow.
- The Archon: Exiles! Did I not foretell of a ruinous villain?! The Grand Design promises victory in the face of our greatest foe.
- The Guardian makes into the room of the Ketch housing the generators powering the shields to Levaszk's pod and destroys them.
- Ghost: Power's draining from the Ketch! That should get the Archon out into the open.
- The Archon: Kepler will rend into infinity as Exiles return, riding the miracles of the event horizon home!
- The Guardian uses Matterspark and a cannon on the Ketch to launch themselves back into the arena, destroying an Exile Brig and two Heavy Shanks upon landing.
- The Archon: Deathless, I am fated to flay you in the shadow of the Giver's carcass, as you are fated to die. Face me, Weapon of the Nine!
- Levaszk then emerges from the pod to attack the Guardian.
- The Archon: This was not the path of the Grand Design! Incorrect! False! Trickster-Deathless ruiners! More. More, my Exiles, we need more! Re-command the Servitors! Whatever they refined is their last! We must feed the singularity! We must rise to become House Ascendant!
- After damaging Levaszk enough, the Archon summons two prophet Servitors to shield him. However, using Matterspark and two nearby cannons, the Guardian takes out the two Serviotrs' shields and destroy them. After damaging them enough, levaszk summons two more Prophet Servitors to protect him as a pulse of dark matter comes from III's body.
- The Archon: Deathless fiend, ruiner, cheat! I was prophesized to win! I saw my victory! I saw it through a thousand eyes! I have been humiliated. How could you take everything from me? I was a House. You made me a ruin. I always triumph in the Grand Design!
- Once again using timed charged Matterspark blasts after being launched from cannons, the Guardian is able to take the shields of the two Prophet Servitors and destroy them. They then put an end to Levaszk.
- The Archon: How could you? How could you take this from me? May you rend and burn for an eternity in the singularity’s embrace.
- Drifter: I just had the craziest idea I've ever had in my life. What if we can wake it up? What if… that's what the Haul is for? "Play the game." I spent years fillin' it with energy! The Haul knows what it was made for.
- Ikora: III intervened so Drifter would bring the means to revive them, brought Lodi to give them a voice, summoned the Weapon and myself so we would hear their message.
- Orin: I don't want to see III again. You were brought here to raise the dead. Bring them to life. They'll close the tear. Wake them, and listen.
- Lodi: Orin, wait; this call is different than the others. What happens to me… if they're dead?
- Orin: I guess you'll find out.
- Lodi: Guess so. Whatever you see… don't worry about me. I was made for this. [pauses] Line's open, Weapon.
- Drifter: On your signal, hero.
- Ikora: You got us here, Guardian. Now get us the answers we deserve.
(Cutscene starts)
- Ikora, Lodi and the Guardian step onto a platform overlooking III's body.
- Lodi: [pants]
- Exasperated, Lodi falls to his knees. He holds a hand up to Ikora to stop her helping him up. She turns to the Guardian.
- Ikora: When you're ready.
- The Guardian nods and looks up. Their Ghost begins flashing rapid signals into the sky. The Derelict flies overhead with the Haul in tow towards III's body. Drifter is at the Derelict's helm.
- Drifter: Not running from this one… as much as I'd like to.
- The Derelict pulls up above the singularity in III's body. Ripples of dark matter cause Drifter rapidly age, his hair graying and liver spots appearing on his face.
- Drifter: Not every day you… resurrect a god!
- Once high enough, the Derelict lets go of the Haul, sending plummeting towards the singularity. Ikora and Lodi watch as it makes contact, sending out a massive shockwave of dark matter energy that pulls back after it passed them.
- Lodi: [gasps]
- Suddenly, Lodi lurches back as he is possessed by III. His eyes glow blue, his right eye showing cracks around it as the right lens of his glasses shatters. An image of a living III is briefly seen as Lodi's shattered glasses lens and the explosion rewinds until it shows the surface of Kepler. The possessed Lodi looks to Ikora.
- Lodi: you stand here that i would not die alone again
- Ikora presses a hand to her head in pain. Maya stands on the surface of Kepler as she raises an arm.
- Maya Sundaresh: If you cannot give me what I want, what CAN you do?
- Maya uses her power of command. Lodi lurches forward. A shot of III's pulsing core is briefly seen.
- Lodi: [grunts] still i die afraid at your sister's command
- Maya Sundaresh: You are a being who bends all rules—why do you fear breaking this one?
- Maya raise her other arm to strengthen her command. Lodi lurches back again.
- Lodi: [gasps] a death ensures extinction
- Maya pulls, and Lodi lurches forward again. A living III is briefly seen.
- Lodi: listen carefully children of my earth
- Lodi slowly reaches out, then presses his hand to his chest.
- Lodi: to survive you must bind the nine [grunts]
- Lodi winces as Maya continues to pull. She briefly stands before III.
- Lodi: [gasps, grunts] it cannot be done. the weapon will do it
- III's core pulses as Maya stands before them.
- Lodi: strike true weapon. goodbye ambassador. goodbye commander.
- Lodi looks to Ikora, as she see briefly flashes of her past life as Nella Davis, including her seeing the Nine's phone and the moment before being struck by the subway train. She looks to Lodi.
- Maya Sundaresh: Come, coward.
- Maya yanks back as she pulls III into the third dimension. Lodi lets out a grunt as III's appearance causes a massive explosion. The Guardian runs up to Lodi and slams a Healing Grenade into his chest.
- Lodi: [grunts, then gasps] That's a neat little trick. Thanks, friend.
- The Guardian helps Lodi to his feet.
- Lodi: [grunts] I'm fine. [pants] I'm dead again. Or… III is dead again. The Nine can't exist here. Same as we can't exist in a painting.
- Ikora: III said their death starts a chain reaction that leads to extinction. But if they went through all the trouble to get us here, to send a message to the children of "their Earth…"
- Lodi: Then it must be a warning, not a promise. III… gave us instructions to prevent extinction.
- Ikora: "Bind the Nine." A dying wish to save… us.
- The three look upon III's body.
