Lodi, also known as Louis Yero, is a Human from the Space Age brought forth through time to serve as the Nine's current Emissary, during The Edge of Fate.

Biography

Early Life

Nicknamed "Lodi", for Lodi, Wisconsin, where he was born in the mid-1920s, Louis Yero had a brother named Ben and family members who taught him various languages throughout his life. At a young age, he and Ben gained a passion for flight after witnessing a biplane fly over their hometown with their father and their Uncle Tomás.

In 1938, at the age of 13, Louis stole his father's truck to visit Uncle Tomás with Ben, only to run out of fuel in an unpopulated area of Illinois. While walking down the road in the hopes of finding a gas station, they came upon the town of Assumption and were approached by III of the Nine. After Louis was briefly knocked unconscious by III offering to answer any questions he had, Ben wondered whether they had just met the Devil, to which Louis concluded that they had met something that was neither holy nor unholy.

The brothers joined the military during World War II, with Louis serving as a pilot in Europe while Ben served in the Pacific War. During Operation Market Garden in 1944, Louis was shot down over Holland and became trapped in his plane for a whole day before being rescued. Louis later joined the Office of Strategic Services, then its post-war successor, the Central Intelligence Agency. As a CIA agent during the Cold War in 1954, he was sent on a mission to the former Peenemünde facility in East Germany to recruit a rocket scientist named Dr. Heuer, but had been lured into a trap. After turning down an offer to defect by a Soviet agent who met him amicably at the facility, he was able to flee before Soviet forces could arrive.

By 1960, Louis took a position as a linguist specializing in alien translation at the Department of External Observation's Linguistics and Deniable Communications division. One of his earliest assignments was investigating the manifestation of the USS Hornet CV-8 of another timeline in the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where he interviewed the alternate timeline's Ben. Two years later in 1962, he met Ben again in Lodi for the first time in many years, to settle accounts after their father's passing.

During his employment at the DEO, Louis met Dr. Nella Davis, a mathematician working on Project Graviton, and began experiencing strange dreams. In 1966, after bumping into her near a DEO containment room that contained a ringing phone unconnected to a rotor, Lodi would enter and answer it, where he would be pulled forward in time by the Nine into the City Age after the Witness's death and the creation of the Echoes. The Nine killed Dr. Davis soon after, prompting an effort by the DEO to recover the two of them after connecting the events by the presence of dark matter.

Arrival on Kepler

Louis would arrive on Kepler after Orin left her position as the Emissary of the Nine and would fall into the care of the Aionians, an enclave of scientists on Kepler who once worked alongside the House of Exile before the latter began to worship a being known to them as "the Giver". He adopted his nickname upon meeting with the Aionians and began recording a series of messages, one of them being received from the Anomaly near Vesper Station in Europa's orbit by Astraea, the central AI aboard there. The Guardian, the Drifter, and Ikora Rey met Lodi as the Vanguard was investigating a singularity that is threatening the planetoid and the Sol System. He later began receiving strange visions and was in the process of becoming the next Emissary of the Nine under the guidance of Orin, who he met later on once she had regained consciousness. Lodi revealed to Ikora that he recognized her because she resembled his colleague during his time at the DEO. He was able to embrace his role as the Emissary when he learned that the Nine member III was killed by Maya Sundaresh by forcing it, a fourth-dimensional being, into a third-dimensional space, and tasked the Guardian recovering an asset from Project Graviton, which was later found to be Graviton Spike. After embracing his role as the third Emissary, he would receive visions of his Space Age memories as the Nine reminded him of the link them and Humanity. He was later visited by Saint-14, and exchanged their conversation in Russian.

A few months after III had died and the Guardian stopped Maya's plans to use Warmind tech to enhance the dwindling power of the Echo of Command within the Plaguelands, he began searching for the solution to the prophecy III stated before its death: "Death ensures extinction. To survive, you must bind the Nine." He reacted with shock after the Vanguard and the Praxic Order decided to redact the prophecy in spite of the charges Earth is experiencing as a consequence of III's death. He reassures Ikora that the future is not guaranteed during a meal with her. He then joins the crew the Drifter assembled which included Eido, Eris Morn, Aunor Mahal, and the Guardian to learn the Nine's connection to the Barant Imperium led by Premier Lume and Dredgen Bael. He learns that VI has anointed Dredgen Bael as the Guardian's foil and that the Outer Orbits of the Nine had gifted Bael the Eclipse energy used as Nightfall Station's power source. Later, after Nightfall Station was destroyed, he would attempt to sympathize with Bael when he begins struggling to adapt to the changes in his body through his loyalty to VI. Then. Lodi discovers a potential solution to bind the Nine to mortal bodies through IV's guidance. IV gave the coordinates of the solution to Lodi, which he discovers is located in the subterranean network beneath Chicago.

Lodi survives 30 trillion years into the future, reuniting with Ben after spending trillions of years trying to find his brother in time. After another star passes by the Sol System and destabilizes the orbits of its planets, he asks Ben for help finding seven of their other family members before the worlds of the system are ejected into interstellar space.

Due to his job as a member of the DEO, Lodi is inherently distrusting of others but learns to trust his companions once they prove they are willing to help. Lodi also can be quickly overwhelmed by new information due to how much is different in the current day compared to where he was dragged from, but is a quick learner and adapts to most paradigms within minutes. Compared to most people in the City Age, Lodi talks very casually and openly, using mannerisms common to people of the pre-Golden age. He also addresses others formerly.

Lodi is extremely adverse to violence and attempts repeatedly to make peace with the House of Exile and the Vex never attacked him due to not perceiving him as a threat. Lodi himself admits he inherently loves to help people in any way he can, which is what made him the only candidate to be able to take up the mantle of the Nine's emissary.

Following his arrival in the future, Lodi would make an effort to remember everything he could of human history before the Collapse from the dinosaurs to his time working with the DEO. He would even make sure to remember the names of his family and other notably people in his life out of fear of forgetting them in a time when he was the only person who would remember any of them.
