Emissary of the Nine
From Destinypedia, the Destiny wiki
The Emissary of the Nine is a title held by beings chosen by the Nine to enact their will throughout the universe.
Overview[edit]
The Emissary of the Nine is a 3-dimensional being who possess the skill of negotiations and served as a translator at one point in their life. Beings who are chosen by the Nine to become an Emissary will experience strange dreams. When that being becomes an Emissary, they will gain access to the 4-dimensional space that the Nine normally inhabit and have the ability to levitate from the ground. They will have eyes that glow when any member of the Nine are speaking through their chosen Emissary and also wear white-colored clothing in the case of Orin and Lodi.
History[edit]
The Nine appointed their first Emissary after the end of the Great Ahamkara Hunt: a tentacle-faced being named Xûr.[1] The Inner Orbits of the Nine would use him to make contact with Guardians and study the nature of the Light since the Ahamkara were mostly extinct.[2] Xûr claimed that his will was not his own[3] and would act as the wandering trader who would sell esoteric wares in exchange for Strange Coins. It is unknown when Xûr was no longer considered an Emissary, but the Nine made plans to appoint their second Emissary as the Red War was imminent: an Awoken Guardian named Orin. Xûr would continue to serve the Nine as their Agent and later co-host the Dares of Eternity alongside Starhorse.
At the time she learned about the Nine, she was investigating the mysterious death of Sjur Eido at Mara Sov's request. She would begin to seek out the Nine after she brutally injured Xûr in her search for answers,[4] then experienced strange dreams upon seeing dust from the silver urn that she once possessed when she was Nasya Sarwar.[5] In her appointment as Emissary, the Nine orchestrated the death of Gol, her Ghost which culminated in the Red War.[6] After Dominus Ghaul was killed and the Traveler was reawakened, Orin became the Emissary and hosted various events on the Nine's behalf such as the Trials of the Nine, the Reckoning, the Invitations of the Nine, and the Rite of the Nine. She was also the one responsible for gifting the Haul to the Drifter and told him to "keep playing the game."[7] That game was revealed to be Gambit. Orin would be allowed to communicate to the Guardian on one occasion, when they were seeking an audience with the Nine regarding the nature of the Darkness.[8] Later, she began to regret her position as the Emissary and began to make plans to escape from them when the Nine refused to grant her freedom.[9][10] She was successful in her plan, despite the Nine's attempts to mentally torture her to make her forget someone important to her.[11] She left as III was speaking through her upon her arrival to Kepler[12] and became unconscious for some time.[citation needed]
After Orin left her position, the Nine made plans to appoint their third Emissary: a linguist from the Department of External Observation, a man from the Space Age named Louis Yero. He learned that he was connected to the Nine when he also began experiencing strange dreams during his employment at the DEO.[13][14][15] When he answered a strange phone inside the DEO's containment room, he would be pulled forward in time into the City Age following the Witness's death and the creation of the Echoes.[citation needed] Louis would go by the name Lodi and arrived on Kepler some time before the Vanguard began to investigate a singularity that was threatening the Sol System.[12] With guidance from Orin, Lodi would realize that he was now a candidate to be the next Emissary.[citation needed] Lodi would become the Emissary when the Guardian defeated Levaszk and heard the final message from III, who was killed by Maya Sundaresh when she pulled it into a 3-dimensional space.[16] After embracing his role as Emissary, he would think about his family during the Space Age when the Nine sent him those visions to remind him of the link between them and Humanity.[17]
