Echoes being expelled from the Traveler

The Echoes are paracausal artifacts of Light and Darkness which emerged from the portal leading into the Pale Heart of the Traveler following the Witness' defeat by the Coalition. They were created from the memories of the various civilizations the Witness and its servants conquered during their eons-long crusade to find and subdue the Traveler, preserved in the Darkness and made real through the Light.[1]

Overview

Upon the Witness's destruction within the Pale Heart of the Traveler, its Darkness diffused into a mist which then coalesced with the Traveler's Light, crystallizing into several objects that emerged from the portal leading to the Pale Heart.[2][3] These "Echoes" scattered across the Sol System, with Crow reporting to Zavala that one was seen heading towards the area between Jupiter and Neptune at relativistic speeds, before stopping in the orbital path of Nessus.[4] The other two landed in the Reef and the Dreadnaught.

The Echo that landed on Nessus came into the possession of the original version of Maya Sundaresh, whose consciousness had survived within the Darkness of the Veil and escaped into the Vex Network.[5] This Echo contained the memories of the Qugu warden Te'Qal,[6] and granted the power to compel and control other beings.[7] Maya, styling herself as "the Conductor," used this Echo, called the Echo of Command, to evolve the Vex on Nessus under her command by introducing individuality to their collective by altering their Radiolaria structure.[citation needed]

The Echo that landed in the Reef fell into the hands of Fikrul, who discovered that it granted him the ability to convert living Eliksni into a new type of Scorn called Revenant Scorn by altering their Ether polarity.[8] This particular Echo contained the memories of an unknown Eliksni singer from Riis.[9]

The Echo that landed on the Dreadnaught contained the memories of Oryx in the time between his ascent to the Taken King and the birth of his children. Unlike the previous Echoes that were encountered, it was not claimed by an individual; however, the Dread leader Keit'Ehr would be in pursuit of the Echo itself.[10]

The Echoes of Command and Riis are both shaped into new forms when taken by their wielders, into the collar that Maya uses[5] and the crystal on the Fanatic's Staff[citation needed] respectively. Only three Echoes have been identified so far, although Ikora believes that if any more exist, they will eventually reveal themselves.[11]

Trivia

  • The intro cutscene for Act II of Episode: Echoes makes it seem like thirteen Echoes are ejected from the Traveler.[12] However, only three are shown being created ingame,[4] making it is more likely that they were potential trajectories for the Echo of Command.
