Vessel of the Nine is a side quest in The Edge of Fate expansion unlocked after the Mission: Nostos story mission. In it, The Guardian helps Lodi figure out the cause of a mysterious possession.

Steps[edit]

"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."
The following is a verbatim transcription of an official document for archival reasons. As the original content is transcribed word-for-word, any possible discrepancies and/or errors are included.

Step 1[edit]

Lodi's voice channel is being overloaded with some kind of strange interference, but his signal is pinging your comms. Search for a spot with a clearer signal and contact him.

  • Lodi contacted

Something is on the line between you and Lodi, flooding the channel with interference. There seems to be a specific location where you can find a stronger signal to punch through and contact Lodi.

  • Ghost: Is that… Lodi's journal? He wouldn't just leave it like this. Lodi, come in, we found your journal. Are you there? He's not answering. Something feels wrong. Let's track him down.
The Guardian heads into the Aionian Campus, where they are able to pick up Lodi's signal.
  • Lodi: Hello, Guardian? This is Lodi; sorry to bother you, uh, but I need to know… if I'm losing it? Are you… experiencing hallucinations? I was transcribing notes and saw… myself? From five minutes prior. It did just what I had done, on a loop. Then vanished. Does that… concern you? Guardian, I can't provide more context, but I also can't maintain protocol if I'm compromised. There's uranium jazz in my spine—feels like someone's hand is using my arm as a sleeve. [groans in pain] Wait, I hear a voice. Guardian, there's… someone in my head. Oh… [makes strangled noises]
  • Lodi: Test. Test. Exceptional candidate - Superior harmonic synapses - optimum dimensionality - a favorable replacement
  • Lodi: [gulps] [gasps] Well, Guardian?! Does that concern you?!

Step 2[edit]

Search for a signature that might indicate Lodi's presence by inspecting the House of Exile corpses coated in strange energy.

  • Energy signature located

Lodi's journal was present, but not the man himself. The strange energy signature Ghost has locked onto might provide a clue to tracking him down.

Step 3[edit]

Search the area for anything of relevance to Lodi's strange experience.

  • Archon drawn out

Lodi is concerned about possession. The first and best lead would seem to be the Archon of the Exiles. Draw him out and see what you can learn.

  • Ghost: The signal's stronger here. I'm picking up a call and patching it through to your navigation display.
  • Lodi: That voice in my head—did something. Uh… Guardians, when you see me, tell me if something's wrong with my eye. Don't lie, OK? Ah, this is a sticky wicket, I'm seeing double of everything but from… thirty seconds ago? I need to get to another psychic slime.
  • Ghost: Lodi, it's dangerous to venture into the Accord alone. Let the Guardian act as a mediator for you.
  • Lodi: You know, I was having the same sort of idea.
  • Ghost: OK, we'll track down another slime and get to the bottom of this.
The Guardian heads deeper into the Aionian Campus and encounters House Exile forces.
  • Ghost: House of Exile! We'll need to clear them out to interface with the… slime… corpse.

Step 4[edit]

Find another slime in order to reach back to the Archon. Hopefully it can be stopped from impacting Lodi.

  • Archon contacted

Lodi believes the Archon is still attempting to possess him. In reaching back, he hopes to learn how to actively prevent the connection.

  • Ghost: OK, Guardian, you're the one who can wield Kepler's energies. Give it a shot.
  • Lodi: Whoa… wait, I'm feeling — everything's spinning. Mr. Ghost, I—
  • Lodi: III's talent for weaving - tapestries - ever remarkable - this emissary has already - made contact - are you listening? - Weapon?
  • Ghost: Who… who is this?! You’re speaking with the Guardian!
  • Lodi: Primitive thing - I speak - with the pre-emptive Weapon.
  • Lodi: GAH. Guardian! Something's in my head, like we saw with the House of Exile. It must be the Archon!
  • Ghost: We'll see if we can track down the source.
The Guardian encounter House Exile forces fighting Choral Vex.
  • Ghost: Does everything still look like it's playing in reverse?
  • Lodi: [cries out] Oh, it feels like you’re plucking a nerve. I'm getting flashes — images. Is—is someone trying to brainwash me?
  • Ghost: We're on our way to another one of those psychic slimes, Lodi. Hang in there. Are you sure this isn't going to make it worse?
  • Lodi: Worse? It can't get worse. Do it, Mr. Ghost, I'm ready.

Step 5[edit]

Use the resonance of the energy point to attract the Archon's attention.

  • Energy point resonated

Fallen Exiles overcome by a particular energy resonate on a psychic wavelength with the Archon. Push back to distract him.

  • Ghost: There's another… mold. The Archon is definitely using these to reach through his followers somehow. We've seen something similar, but…
  • Lodi: I'm seeing… everything… like I'm looking down at the valley. There's a strange ship, it's headed towards… an eye? But I see earlier, there's a robot leaning backwards… Stars, oh, I'm showing you some stars. I see—I see us at a stand in a city—you bought noodles for me to try. It's good! What are these? Further ahead—I feel someone else's bloodlust. I want my freedom, I can kill for it, but, I, I don't know if this is me. And at the end of the valley… I see you, Guardian, standing by Lake Michigan… It's the future.
The Guardian climbs onto a suspended pod and finds a symbol of II.
  • Lodi: That was definitely not the Archon. So… something possessed me, rewired how I see time, and it wasn't the other telepathic alien we've met so far. All of my dreams are coming true.
  • Ghost: That's one way to look at it. You’re awfully calm for having someone in your head. If it wasn't the Archon, it was at least connected somehow.
  • Lodi: It must have been that thing I saw when I arrived… I'm not… Human anymore, am I. What did it do to me? It's like I… turned neon.
