"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."
The following is a verbatim transcription of an official document for archival reasons. As the original content is transcribed word-for-word, any possible discrepancies and/or errors are included.

Step 1[edit]

Mysterious chess pieces may have some relation to the Aionians's history. Maybe an Aionian historian will know more.

  • Aionian historian located

"We used these to send encoded messages to our mission control on Earth." —Dean Rebecca

  • Drifter: Mm. That's from a Golden Age game called "chess". I found a few pieces myself on Earth.[note 1] It's a sure sign the Nine got their eyes on you. I used to think they were telling us to be strategic. Think it through. Play the long game. But now… I think it's a reminder that we're just placeholders. Stored in a little box they call "Time", until they’re all burned out. Like Orin. Maybe that's just my guilty conscience talking. Go out there and prove me wrong, hero. I'm beggin' ya.
The Guardian finds and speaks with Malthas.

" The Aionian recognizes the chess piece instantly. "Ah! This looks like one of our ancient messages to Earth." "

" "Our original mandate was to explore this sector of the system, returning home in due time." "

" "At some point, mission control stopped replying, and we were stranded. What you see now grew from that misfortune. There must be more." "

Step 2[edit]

The chess pieces are long-lost correspondences to Earth! The Aionians have asked you to find more, if you can.

  • Chess piece found

"At some point mission control stopped replying and were stranded. What you see now grew from that misfortune." —Malthas, Aionian Historian

  • Ghost: Sounds like there are more pieces to collect in the Accord.
  • Drifter: I'd sure like to know what they all mean. Wouldn’t you? Do it to it, hero.
The Guardian finds a white pawn.

" Nxe6; "Instructions received. Dark matter collection online. Temporal disturbances nominal." "

Step 3[edit]

You've found another encoded chess piece, but it's significance is unclear.

  • Chest piece returned

Return the chess piece to Malthas for more information.

" The Aionian nods somberly. "In the early days of the colony, we had an ongoing correspondence game with mission control." "

" "Over time, the moves gained meaning, becoming our primary cipher." "

" Now, centuries later, our messages are reappearing. Presumably undelivered." "

Step 4[edit]

The historian believes the chess pieces provide insight into how Aionian society came to be. They've has asked you to collect more lost correspondences from across Kepler.

  • Chess pieces found X/9

"Over time the moves gained meaning, becoming our primary cipher. Now, centuries later, our messages are reappearing. Presumably undelivered." —Malthas, Aionian Historian

Step 5[edit]

You've collected the remainder of the lost correspondences. Return the completed collection to Dean Rebecca.

  • Collection returned

".Rxe7 | Bxe7. .communications time | out gameover." —Unknown

" "These transmissions tell the story of how we were cut off from Earth and left to fend for ourselves." "

" "A mystery, until you arrived. Now we know the truth of the Collapse, and the fate of those we once loved." "

" "But, the last message makes me wonder if there are other forces at play… those with an interest in keeping us isolated." "

  • Drifter: Last time I found one of these pieces I was… having a hard time. Fixing to bug out of this orbit for good. And they're what stopped me. Convinced me there was… something left for me here after all. Figured they were secret clues to my place in the Nine's grand plan. Turns out, they were Aionian messages that never made it home. I just been collecting undelivered mail this whole time! Even if they weren't meant for me, there's no doubt in my mind I was meant to deliver 'em. I'm glad they finally made it back home, where they belong. Just like me.
