Dark matter

Dark matter is a form of exotic matter which typically can only be detected via its gravitational interactions with normal baryonic matter.[1] It permeates the universe and forms aggregations around and within celestial bodies, which in the Sol System have given rise to a group of sentient dark matter-based entities known as the Nine.[2]
Using the energy of the mysterious Haul gifted to him by the Nine, the Drifter is able to create counterfeit Taken, which generally look and behave identically to regular Taken, but exhibit low sterile neutrino counts and high levels of ΛCDM, or Lambda cold dark matter.[3]
On Kepler, the local House of Exile led by Archon Levaszk have developed technologies that can utilize and manipulate dark matter, which Guardians can use to merge themselves with dark matter and transform into a compact, energized state known as Matterspark.[citation needed] The abundant dark matter on and around the planetoid also interacts with the House of Exile's ether supply, causing it to be poisoned.[citation needed] Kepler is also home to a species of microbial life-form which feeds on dark matter.[4]
Trivia[edit]
- In real life, dark matter is an invisible form of matter hypothesized to account for certain gravitational effects that cannot be explained by general relativity given the amount of observed matter in the universe. The existence and likely nature of dark matter currently remains a subject of debate among astrophysicists; one prevailing hypothesis is that it is made up of some as-yet undiscovered subatomic particle that does not interact with light or other electromagnetic radiation. Another popular hypothesis is that it consists of primordial black holes.
- Despite its name, dark matter has no intrinsic association with the Darkness, nor with any other paracausal force.[5]
- Sterile neutrinos are one of the hypothetical forms of dark matter suggested to exist by some real-world physicists; in Destiny, sterile neutrinos are a characteristic signature emitted by Taken.[6]
