The Sol Divisive is a Vex collective located in the Black Garden that are the faithful protectors and worshipers of the Black Heart residing within it.[1]

History

Origins

The origins of the Sol Divisive are unclear. It appears that at some point they diverged from the rest of the Vex Collective, which in general does not align itself with either the Light or Darkness, and indeed seeks to bring about a universe where neither one exists. A Vex record originating from the Black Garden seems to indicate that at some point the Vex in the Black Garden encountered The Witness, after which the term "Black Heart" appears. After this event, the Vex seem to adopt an approach more in line with the philosophy of the Witness, suggesting that this record may recount the origin of the Sol Divisive and the Black Heart.[2]

According to the Cloud Strider Rohan, who once infiltrated the Black Garden, the Conceptual Mind created the Black Heart in an unsuccessful attempt to replicate the Veil. The Sol Divisive would later be discovered exhibiting seemingly religious behavior toward the Heart, a behavior which Ikora Rey hypothesized was the only rational response the Vex could take when faced with an entity they could not simulate.

City Age

A lone Guardian managed to enter the Black Garden, where they fought the Sol Divisive and encountered the Sol Progeny, a trio of Axis Mind Minotaurs seemingly imbued with power by the Black Heart. After a lengthy battle, the Progeny were destroyed, leading to the Heart's destruction.

Months later, the Undying Mind awoke and attempted to seal the Black Garden from the outside world and resurrect the Black Heart. The Guardians managed to destroy the Mind, but, true to its name, it returned from death shortly afterwards, forcing them to fight it repeatedly over a period of years. This cycle was finally broken when the Red Legion destroyed the gate to the Black Garden in Meridian Bay, sealing the Garden and unintentionally fulfilling the Undying Mind's objective.

A second gate into the Black Garden was later discovered on the Moon, allowing the Guardians to invade the Garden and face the Sol Divisive once more. As of this time, the Garden had become home to the Consecrated Mind, Sol Inherent and Sanctified Mind, Sol Inherent, a pair of powerful Vex Axis Minds that seemed to have been warped and altered by an unknown force.

As a result of the Guardians' intrusion into the Black Garden, the Sol Divisive began to invade the Moon. Led by a resurrected Undying Mind which had duplicated itself across hundreds of thousands of realities, the Guardians made repeated assaults into the Black Garden to slow the Vex's invasions. Ultimately, the Undying Mind and its copies were destroyed for good, preventing the Black Heart from being resurrected, and the attacks on Luna were stopped. Though, some small pockets of Vex forces still remained.

Two years after their Luna invasion, the Sol Divisive would launch an assault on the Ares Spire on Mars, seeking to take information from Rasputin in support of the Witness' objectives, as well as to use the facility to imprison the Subminds. The Guardian battled with them at the behest of the Lightless Osiris, foiling their plans to scavenge information and destroy the facility itself.

Structure

The Sol Divisive are easily identified by their green, moss-covered frames and ring-like attachments on their heads. The moss on their bodies shows that they have been in stasis for quite some time, apparently frozen in rapture by some unknown revelation.[3] Powerful Axis Minds, following their resurgence following Shadowkeep, show much more plantlife growing on their frames, such as trees growing on the backs of Ultra Minotaurs. Additionally, certain Minds like Persys, Sanctified Mind and two major Harpies have old rock covering their chassis and large blue and orange electric tentacles sprouting from their backs.

Previously, there existed little knowledge on the Sol Divisive to help us understand their objectives but, though with revelations provided by messages sent by the Witness in Shadowkeep [4] and later in Season of the Seraph, it appears the Sol Divisive are working in favour of achieving the end-goals of the Darkness, led by the Witness. The Vex as a species originated before the current reality of Destiny was created, the winning solution in the game played by the Gardener and Winnower. The Sol Divisive's actions show an understanding of this origin, and a desire to worship what could be considered their creators.

Trivia

  • The name "Sol Divisive" may refer to this collective being associated with the Sol System specifically, and it is set apart from the greater Vex collective by its worship of the Darkness.
  • The Vex of the Sol Divisive are the first type of Vex of any kind to appear on Luna in the entire Destiny series.
  • According to the Aspect Lore book, other Vex collectives avoid the Sol Divisive, and on occasion even fight them.[5]
