Charlemagne was a submind of the Warmind Rasputin, one of the vast machine intelligences built during the Golden Age.[1] Originally believed to be a Warmind in its own right, Tyra Karn discovered its true nature as part of Rasputin's network after searching for its vault for a decade.[1] Upon discovering evidence of a direct threat to its core, Rasputin assumed direct control of Charlemagne's resources above Hellas Basin to defend itself.[1]
History
Origins
Charlemagne was one of the multiple subminds of Rasputin located on Mars. It was originally believed to be a Warmind of it's own. However Tyra Karn discovered that it was in fact a submind of Rasputin after searching for its vault for a decade. [2]. Shortly after the Traveler's reawakening during the Red War, Rasputin would take complete control of Charlemagne's resources so it could fight against the Grasp of Nokris led by Xol, Will of the Thousands.
Rebuilding the Warmind
Shortly after retrieving the submind data of Malahayati and Kernel. A fireteam would be sent by Ana Bray and Clovis Bray to retrieve Charlemagne's data on Mars from forces of Xivu Arath's Horde, led by Darkblade Kelgorath, Risen From Bones. The Guardians would succeed, killing Kelgorath and retrieving the data.
Trivia
- Charlemagne would have appeared in the original story of Destiny,[3] and was mentioned in pre-alpha marketing material, which claimed players were to retrieve a shard of its core intelligence, but was never mentioned in the final version of the game itself.[4]
- This concept was eventually implemented as Heist Battlegrounds during the Season of the Seraph
- A location in the Dust Palace called "Charlemagne's Vault" was also supposed to appear in the game and serve as the place where the player obtained Thorn, but this was also removed or never completed. The only possible surviving reference to Charlemagne in Destiny is Ghost commenting that the Dust Palace once housed "the Warmind of Mars", but this Warmind is never identified by name.[5]
- A mission item present in The Taken King appears to bear some relation to the Warminds. It features an upgrade node with the letters "CHLM", which may be an abbreviation of Charlemagne. This indicated that Charlemagne was still part of Destiny canon.
- Historically, Charlemagne or Charles I, was the legendary 8th century Christian king of the Franks and the first Holy Roman Emperor. His attempt at unifying Europe, the first time since ancient Rome, and attempt to resurrect the Roman Empire which fell to the Germanic tribes in 476 A.D., may allude to humanity's attempt to reclaim their own empire, forged during the Golden Age, which dissolved after the Collapse.
