War moons are natural satellites converted into warships by the Hive, taken from around the orbit of Fundament after the war with the Ammonite species. First suggested to Auryx by his gods, the Hive colonized the Ammonite worlds as both an insult to them and for homes as Fundament was no longer suitable.[1] As the Hive matured, the moons were soon connected by interdimensional rifts thanks to studies done by Savathun and power from Xivu Arath, and their kingdoms grew through the establishment of their Ascendant Realms, with trade and language passing between them.[6]
To stay sharp in the Sword Logic and feed their worms, the Hive god-kings warred amongst themselves as the moons traveled through interstellar space until they reached other civilizations, at which point they united to exterminate them.[7] War moons were used to physically destroy Taishibethi orbitals and star webs.[5] They were also present during the Hive-Harmony war;[8] Oryx and Savathûn conversed amongst them.[9] After this conflict both Xivu Arath and Savathûn departed, taking their war moons with them, the former flying off into space and the latter disappearing through the black hole.
Not long after Emperor Calus's exile, the Leviathan observed a fleet of Cabal warships battling a war moon on the border of the empire. As the moon was too large to be destroyed by direct bombardment, warships cloaked by Psion powers attempted to land drills and troops on its surface to deliver a planet-cracker into its depths.[10]
Much later, Calus and his Loyalists encountered another war moon. Within they found the Crown of Sorrow. In an attempt to bring the Hive under his control, Calus created Gahlran, the Sorrow-Bearer for the sole purpose of wielding the Crown of Sorrow. Upon donning the Crown of Sorrow, Gahlran was corrupted by the Hive magic placed within the Crown by Savathun, turning him against Calus.
