The Praetorate are the highest-ranking council within the Cabal Empire.

History

According to Dominus Calus, the Praetorate rose to power by "[driving] the republicans into the sea", and their strength was rooted in their control over the Cabal's Legions. Calus led a purge of the Praetorate during his campaign to become the Cabal Emperor, and gave the Legions the rights of citizens. Calus' purge was not thorough, however, and members and loyalists of the Praetorate survived and plotted their revenge during the centuries of Calus' reign. The Consul, a member of the Praetorate, influenced Ghaul into leading a successful coup against Calus. While the Praetorate hoped to regain its previous stature by using Ghaul as a puppet, Ghaul proved more strong-willed than they had predicted. Eventually, even the Praetorate learned to fear Ghaul and follow his decrees.
