Mint[edit]
- "A metallic bird, cradling the ethos of idealism."
Light of Peace[edit]
In the ruins of a village, Attal discovered the precursor to Mint-a fragment of a sword relic.
Forged by Attal's Light, Mint was reborn as a metallic avian creation.
In the Golden Age and even earlier, doves symbolized peace. Now Mint delivers peace to the world on bright Arc wings.
Attal[edit]
- "A young Lightbearer possessing a heart overflowing with peace and love."
Name: Attal
Race: Human
Revival Location: Northern Africa
Ghost: Swift
Relic: Mint (Avian)
The Ghost Swift found Attal in North Africa and resurrected her.
Upon her resurrection, this young Lightbearer immediately exhibited a profound love for all creation. The scarred earth gradually imbued her with determination-she would protect this world, teeming with life, in her own way.
She and Swift slowly made their way to Europe and settled in a peaceful village. It was here that she met her future partner, Gwynn...but with this encounter came a tragedy common to the era.
After that, Attal picked up her roots and set off on a journey with Gwynn.
Swift[edit]
An experienced and steadfast Ghost who accompanies Attal in her quest for peace, ever willing to offer counsel and aid.
Diary[edit]
Mint[edit]
When Mint was healing the guerrillas in Jiangshi Metro today, they complimented it and said it was much more unique than other Relics shaped like swords, blades, and spears. Mint can't speak, but if it could, I bet it'd be super happy to hear that!
When I was newly risen, I often imagined what my Relic would look like. But up until Mint showed up, the image of a metal bird never crossed my mind!
Mint was born of a fragmented Relic—a sword that had broken apart.
I first saw it in the ruins of a village. The place reeked of rust, telling of the suffering it had endured. I found myself there not long after Swift revived me. At the time, I hadn't been able to adapt to this world of misery and death. I stood there staring at scene of blight before me, not even bothering to brush the fallen leaves and dust from my shoulders… Then, I suddenly felt a pulse of energy echoing in my chest. It made me clench my fists as the tears started running down my cheeks once more.
Following my instincts, I picked up a piece of scrap and imbued it with the power surging through my head and chest… And in a flash of cold blue, Mint was born.
Its Arc energy has the capacity for both destruction and healing, sharpness and softness.
When it perched on my fingertip with its firm yet sensitive claws, I knew it was my very own Relic—my Mint.
Later, I learned that people from the Golden Age saw doves as a symbol of peace. A creative idea and perfect fit, I think.
Thus I shall bring peace to the world with Mint, my little Arc-infused metal bird.
Cold Blue Memory[edit]
Gwynn is fast asleep.
Looking at her like this, I always think back to our first encounter on that cold, white, and noisy winter day.
When I first met her, she was heavily wounded and covered in blood.
She stumbled into a building with a whole squad of soldiers chasing after her, laughing despite being a rabbit hunted by a pack of hungry wolves. I didn't think twice. I couldn't turn my back on someone so badly injured, so I broke into the building and ordered Mint to heal her.
Waves of pursuers descended on us with even fiercer firepower. I carried her to another place to hide, but we walked right into another bombardment. Such a heavy attack made it hard to escape even with our Ghosts' help.
But I was concerned more about the village than myself.
It was a peaceful place where I'd stayed for a long time. I liked the villagers, the perfectly straight birches lining the roads, the babbling brook flowing through the outskirts… And after that brutal siege…there was nothing left but rubble and embers.
I asked myself over and over, was I wrong to try and save someone? If I hadn't saved her, would the village have been attacked anyway? Was I the one who brought blood, fire, and death on them?
Then she opened her eyes and, fighting through the pain, rose to her feet and dragged me into the woods.
She didn't say a word, and neither did I. We just silently watched as flames swept the building and streets. The blaze lit up her face and pierced my eyes. Why did it hurt so much…? I couldn't stop the tears from falling.
Had I done something wrong? Should I not try to save people? Should I just sit by and watch them suffer?
Of course not. It wasn't me who was in the wrong.
A Sharp Olive Branch[edit]
I wonder what Cabal civilization is like. They have their own culture and language, so I think communication could be possible, though they've ignored all my attempts so far.
The supplies they looted in the Red Sea Rift were far more than necessary. Why disturb the peace with gunfire if they have no worries about surviving? Were these cold hard hunks of ore really worth all the fighting? Worth all the sorrow, pain, bloodshed, and deaths? Worth the dashed hopes of survival?
Life itself should be the most precious thing in the world…right?
I won't stop those who hunt out of necessity. That's how the world works, and I shouldn't interfere with attempts at survival. But I cannot—will not—forgive those who snuff out others' lives for selfish reasons. Kindness without limits is hypocrisy. It's the condescending, arrogant disregard for others' lives. Only through restrained kindness can we treat all beings as equals and spread love and peace throughout the world.
And that's why, whether it's the Cabal or the Eliksni or some other threat, I too must take up arms and fight, no matter how much I wish otherwise. But if the day finally comes when they want to embrace peace and drop their guns to talk with me, I will welcome them with open ears and an open heart.
As for cruel pillagers who refuse to see reason…I have no choice but to protect the innocent.
Taste of Home[edit]
I heard that good partners should give each other gifts to express their love. Hmm… I don't think I've ever given Gwynn a gift. Well, no time like the present!
But what should I give her…? I'll ask Crowther if he has any ideas.
(A new note)Crowther said that Gwynn doesn't have any particular preferences and suggested that I prepare some dishes from her hometown. After wandering around for so many years, she must be homesick, even if she's never expressed it.
I thought he had a point, but Swift thought otherwise. He advised me not to listen to Crowther and called it a "lousy idea". I don't get why Swift would think so. Who wouldn't like a taste of home? Well…since I can't think of anything else, I'll make dinner for her! Surely there's no harm listening to Crowther. Who'd know Gwynn better than her own Ghost, right?
I'll look up some recipes and prepare the ingredients tomorrow!
(A new note)Some sardines, eels, herrings, onions, potatoes, wheat flour, creams, lemons, peppers, and animal blood… What strange ingredients. But…I've got to trust the process. The Haven Library's recipes wouldn't lead me astray…right?
(A new note)Crowther came by as I was preparing the materials and left looking satisfied.Huh. I guess I got everything right!
(A new note)
…Why did Gwynn storm out looking upset? I followed the recipes to the letter and specifically chose the top three most famous dishes… Cooking them wasn't exactly difficult, so it's probably nothing to do with my culinary skills… Where did I go wrong…?
Was it the recipes themselves? Aren't stargazy pies, jellied eels, and black pudding supposed to be classic English dishes? Huh… Guess even the Haven Library is wrong sometimes!
Snow Peas[edit]
I've stayed in Jiangshi Metro long enough to have tread every corner of that frozen, blizzard-worn wasteland.
I always see drifters struggling to survive, huddled inside the run-down building scattered throughout the wilderness. For various reasons, they refuse to settle in Jiangshi Metro. Death has long been an integral aspect of their lives.
Walking among them, I offer whatever help I can, be it searching for supplies or fending off looters. But what I receive in return is mostly their fear and vigilance. It doesn't matter—I've come to anticipate it. The world has been plagued by despair for so long that people don't believe in kindness for kindness's sake.
Though Gwynn typically doesn't approve of me offering help, she accompanies me to take out looters—that's how she upheld her convictions: bringing death upon the wicked and realizing true justice. I feel she tends to go a bit overboard on the violence, but even I must admit there aren't many choices when it comes to dealing with such people.
So we journey across the tundra, helping drifters and asking for nothing in return.
Today, we saved a family from being robbed. This wouldn't be anything noteworthy—we do this often, after all—but strangely, just as we were preparing to leave, they stopped us. You could tell they'd lived a tough life just by looking at them, with their sallow faces and sunken cheeks indicating a lack of food.
It was a middle-aged woman up front, with her hands hidden in her pockets. I couldn't figure out why they stopped us, but I glimpsed that Gwynn had gripped her scythe. I just sighed and waited for her to make a move.
Then, the woman look out a handful of grilled snow peas and passed them to me.
Breathing a sigh of relief, I accepted the peas, and Gwynn quietly released her scythe. Come to think of it, her reaction was kind of cute.
Then we parted ways with them and continued our journey.
Well, here's to more love and peas tomorrow!
Notes on Raising Eliksni Kids: Field Trip[edit]
I took the kids to Haven on something called a "field trip" today.
It's a form of education I learned from some old books. In the past, schools would organize periodic trips for children, allowing them to reinforce what they'd learned and put it into practice while enjoying themselves, or teach them something new based on the destination. It didn't make much sense to me at first-outings are meant to be relaxing, so why should we require the kids to "reinforce what they've learned" while taking part, let alone pick up new knowledge?
But what happened next proved that doing so is indeed very, VERY necessary in certain circumstances. I don't understand how such lovely, sensible kids could become completely uncontrollable after stepping foot in Haven… Going forward, I should make "Dos and Don'ts" guides specific to the places we'll visit. That should help them learn and practice while having fun sightseeing. But that's a matter for a later date… First and most importantly, I need to adjust my lessons based on the complaints I received today.
Complaint 1: There are bite marks all over my tomatoes. I worked hard to grow those, you know! And here I was about to let it slide if you guys just took them quietly. But taking a bite and then hanging them back up? Are you trying to piss me off?!
* Add etiquette lesson: Don't touch things that don't belong to you.
Complaint 2: What on earth happened? I thought I just drank a few too many and passed out on the roadside. No biggie, right? So why'd I wake up to find myself covered with mud and trash?! Someone lookin' to start a fight?! 'Cause I'll give ya one!
* Hmm… The kids were probably trying to keep him warm and used those things as a blanket. Add etiquette lesson: Not all things can be used as blankets.
Complaint 3: My son told me that when he was playing ball with his friends, two Fallen kids forced their way into the game. They haven't touched the ball since. Come on, they have twice as many hands as my son! Can't they just keep to themselves?
* Add etiquette lesson: Never participate in friendly competitions when you have an unfair advantage.
…
Complaint 36: Since when are Fallen kids allowed to run around Haven?
* Do they mean the kids ran too fast or went somewhere they shouldn't be? …Or do they mean they shouldn't be in Haven to begin with? I hope it's the former… Add etiquette lesson: Don't run too fast in the city, and don't enter buildings uninvited.
…
Complaint 51: Those Fallen kids scared the heck outta me! They can't just pop up out of nowhere like that!
* …Alright. I should inform the locals beforehand and give them enough time to prepare.
…
Complaint 74: We should forbid any Fallen from entering Haven! Including Kevarrh!
* They're just blowing off steam. I'll ignore this one.
…
More than half of the complaints were aimed at the Eliksni race as a whole. Learning manners and common sense won't help with that at all… No, I've got to keep my chin up! It's already much better than it used to be, right? At the very least, I've got a clear path before me.
No more blindly looking for chances to work towards peace.
No one can stop me as long as I'm willing to keep trying.
For love and peace! You've got this, Attal!
Notes on Raising Eliksni Kids: Lesson Records[edit]
Vocabulary Lessons
So far, I've tried three methods of teaching vocabulary: textbooks, situation simulations, and crossword puzzles.
Among them, the textbook method was the most efficient, but it also tended to make the kids sleepy.
Situation simulations were very effective, though their efficiency was less than half that of the textbooks. But the worst part is, I need to spend a looong time writing scripts for them. Just thinking about all that work gives me a headache…
Solving crossword puzzles is the kids' favorite, but this method can only test their learning outcomes and cannot be used to teach them new words. They won't remember the complete word even if they guess the letters correctly…
Maybe I can adjust the ratio of using vocabulary textbooks, situation simulations, and crossword puzzles to 5:3:2?
30% situation simulations and the corresponding scripts… No, that won't work. I need to reconsider.
Grammar Lessons
Since I haven't found any new or interesting methods, I used the traditional way: giving examples and explanations. The children clearly didn't take to this method, though—they dozed off less than in the vocabulary lessons, but they had a much harder time paying attention.
Only when the examples were related to their daily lives would they perk up and actively participate. And when the phrases were about me and Gwynn, they'd REALLY get excited… Alright, I should study how to make up funny examples. I can't always write about Gwynn and I.
Literature Lessons
Through literature lessons, I let them embrace our old tales and poems in hopes that they'll learn more about humankind. I thought there wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary about these lessons, but interestingly, some concepts common to us were very hard for them to understand.
For instance, they felt especially confused about emotions playing a pivotal role in relationships, even into adulthood—for the Eliksni, hierarchy is everything. I wonder why Eliksni society ended up this way… Was it something to do with their history? Did something happen that led to them restricting their people through ranks?
What surprised me was that although the kids didn't seem to understand these emotions, they seemed extremely curious about them. I suppose what they don't reject still has a chance to be accepted, right? Curiosity is a good start. Hmm… I need to add more literature lessons to the next stage.
Math Lessons
Quite normal. The kids don't mix math—a lucky break for me! I can teach them myself, but there are so many lessons now that I don't have enough time for myself. I need to find some new teachers for them!
Sports Lessons
There was nothing more popular than sports. Even if they were just aimlessly running around on the grass, they showed an astonishing level of enthusiasm… Would be nice if they were that interested in their vocabulary and grammar lessons! I'll find some time to ask the children in Haven about what kind of games they like. Maybe playing those games can encourage friendliness toward humans! Unfortunately, they refused to sleep and kept asking to play ball late at night. No more games for them. I should limit their sports lessons…
Music Lessons
I never imagined singing could be so…violent on the ears. That goes for every one of the Eliksni kids… Maybe their vocal cords just aren't made for singing? Listening to their singing makes me feel like I've dropped into some insect-infested cave…
But they're quite gifted when it comes to instruments, that's for sure! I bet three Eliksni kids could form a small band. We should stick to instruments and avoid lessons that involve singing.
Art Lessons
I ran into a critical problem at this stage—it's not that the kids won't cooperate or anything, but rather that I can't teach them art… I should find some professionals. Who might be good at drawing…? Maybe…Ikora? But she seems so serious… I'll ask Tan-2. Surely he'd be willing to play with the kids!
Inter-Species Friendship[edit]
I think that day will be engraved in my mind forever.
It was in that dilapidated, makeshift campsite. We couldn't communicate due to the language barrier, but before I'd even show kindness to the Eliksni kids, they gave me a "toy" as a gift.
That moment was like touching the soft paw of a cat for the first time, filling my heart with a warm bliss and putting a smile on my face. I wanted to pinch their little cheeks, but held back for fear of scaring them off.
I'm not familiar with any other Eliksni children, so I don't have anything for comparison, but these kids didn't seem to care that we were different. Even though I'm a human who doesn't speak their language, they still felt curious about me and welcomed me with a gift.
Racial and linguistic barriers can't stand in the way of showing and spreading friendliness—these kids convinced me of that. There is no natural antagonism between "us" and "them". Various reasons may have caused conflict to brew between us, but so long as there is a sliver of hope for peace, I will always fight for it.
But enough about the distant future. What matters now is taking good care of these kids. Hmm…what do they need aside from an education? Maybe some human kids to be their friends? Are there any parents who would let their children play with the Eliksni? I should ask around… Oh! Maybe we can organize a friendly sports competition?
I'll gather some suggestions tomorrow!
An Unsent Letter[edit]
Dear Kind Eliksni Gentleman,
About that last battle… I'm so sorry.
No matter what, I had to take out that out-of-control Servitor. I just couldn't let it threaten Jiangshi Metro. Maybe you could understand my determination to protect them—after all, you protected these children in the same way.
Our stances are unbreakable chains that bind us. I am well aware of that. The old me wouldn't accept it, but…from all I've been through, I've learned that refusing to accept reality doesn't change it. There was almost nothing I could do about it, and I… All I can do is strive for a happy ending—or at least, one that is better than the original.
If someone were to ask whether I've ever regretted repairing that Servitor for you, the answer would be: Never. Even if it resulted in a final, inevitable battle, I never once regretted helping you. You never wanted the Servitor to malfunction. That, I understand. You just wanted to ensure the kids could survive.
However, I do regret one thing—I never asked your name. Whenever I think about you or tell someone this story, all I can call you is "Kind Eliksni Gentleman"…
But please don't worry. I'll take care of those kids as if they were my own. They will never starve due to a lack of Ether, nor shall they go without a roof over their heads. The people of Haven haven't completely accepted the Eliksni, but at least they can live here safely without fear of being hunted down.
They now have many outstanding Lightbearers as their teachers, and even some human kids to play with.
Once they're a bit older, Kevarrh will take them to live with her—I told you about Kevarrh, remember? She's an Eliksni living in Haven who is experienced in communicating with humans.
Anyway, Kind Eliksni Gentleman, please rest assured and leave them to me.
—Your friend, Attal
Notes on Raising Eliksni Kids: Invited Teachers[edit]
Gwynn: She didn't refuse outright, but she may as well have… Indeed, I didn't know how to answer her questions—"You want me to teach those kids how to take lives? Or enlighten them with my philosophies on death?" I'm not sure she's the…best choice for a teacher right now.
Tan-2: I didn't expect him to be so easily persuaded. He agreed right after I finished speaking, but I hadn't even told him what lessons I wanted him to teach. I wish Gwynn could be as enthusiastic as him! The thing is, despite him agreeing so readily, Tan-2 sometimes talks to himself, as if he's arguing with someone… The children are at that age where they copy everything. I sure hope they won't pick up this strange habit…
Jolder: After hearing my proposal, she stared at me for a moment…then told me no. I can't say I'm surprised. Plus I've seen how she trains her apprentices, and I don't think the kids are ready for such intensity.
Kabr: He accepted my invitation after asking about every detail where the kids came from! He's willing to teach both literature and math. I'll update him on the kids' progress tomorrow!
Ikora: She refused me calmly. She considers it nice to have more friendly Eliksni, but chooses to remain vigilant and avoid providing them with more knowledge. Though I'm a bit disappointed, I was expecting that—this doesn't seem like her kind of thing.
Finnala: She gave me a straight refusal, claiming that she doesn't have the time or energy for such a mission. Considering her duties, I see where she's coming from… She works until midnight almost every day. I'd say that's too much even for a Lightbearer… Seriously, how does she survive that kind of workload?
Ning Fei: Surprisingly, he had a certain passion for teaching the Eliksni… He not only volunteered to teach them an Eastern language, but he also claimed that he could teach anything—from astronomy to geography, from math to philosophy… I have to say, though, I trust his Ghost more than him.
Maru: She refused as expected. Somehow I felt relieved. The kids are still young and innocent, so spending time with a pirate of all people might not be appropriate…
