The Dire Emergence is an on-going conflict taking place between the Guardians of the Vanguard, the Dire Taken and Dread, the Lucent Hive, and the forces of Xivu Arath, God of War aboard the Dreadnaught, all striving to acquire the Echo of Navigation; an Echo that contained the memories of Oryx, the Taken King after his slaying of Akka, the Worm of Secrets and communion with the Deep to learn the power to Take. When the Vanguard detected an Eversion Anchor land in the European Dead Zone, the Guardian would be dispatched to investigate the artifact on Earth while Eris Morn and Drifter scouted across the Dreadnaught. During their exploration of the Dreadnaught, Eris Morn would be slain by the Taken Subjugator known as the Resonant Knife only to re-awaken in her Throne World, the High Heresy unbeknownst to her allies. Following their discovery of the Echo, the Guardian, Drifter, and Sloane eventually reunited with Eris and began to formulate a plan to contain the Echo within the High Heresy.
Prelude[edit]
During the Hive's war against the Ecumene, Auryx came to the realization that the Worms had deceived him and his sisters as their Worms were growing past their abilities to feed them with death.[1] Meeting with his sisters in his Throne World, the three Hive siblings would discuss this dilemma. When Savathûn and Xivu Arath offered their strength to assist Auryx in finding a way to ensure their salvation, Auryx killed his sisters and acquired the power from their deaths to confront Akka in the Ascendant Plane.[2] Slaying Akka and drawing upon his power to commune with the Deep, Auryx created the Tablets of Ruin and acquired the power to Take, becoming Oryx, the Taken King.[3]
After the Vex Incursion into his Throne World, Oryx constructed a tremendous Hive ship known as the Dreadnaught with a piece of Akka's corpse to house his Throne World.[4] Sometime after the Dreadnaught's creation, Oryx would be challenged by Xir-Kuur, a Knight of Xivu Arath. Although Xir-Kuur was defeated by Oryx and Taken in the process, his refusal of the offers promised to him resulted in his identity becoming splintered between both a Hive and Taken.[5] Following the death of Crota, Son of Oryx, Oryx would travel to the Sol System with the intent of taking vengeance for his son's death, initiating the Taken War against Humanity.[6] However, Oryx would be defeated by a Guardian fireteam in his Throne Room, vanquishing the threat he posed to the system.[7] Years later, the Dreadnaught would be utilized by Xivu Arath to deploy her brood across the system until her banishment at from her Throne Room at the hands of Eris Morn.[8][9]
Following the death of the Witness in the Pale Heart, its Darkness diffuses into a mist and merges with the Traveler's Light to create the crystallized paracausal objects known as Echoes.[10] The Echo of Navigation; created from the memories of Oryx after his ascension into the Taken King would break away from the Traveler and land on the Dreadnaught. Sometime later, a faction of Dread led by Keit'Ehr, who had been Taken and rechristened as the Resonant Knife, would arrive on the Dreadnaught where they would establish a new base of operations alongside the Dire Taken; a new faction of Taken that had emerged on the Hive vessel.[11]

Echoed Warnings[edit]
Return to the Dreadnaught[edit]
- "I have kept watch over the husk of Akka as it slept… quiet and unclaimed. Now something, sent by hand unseen vivifies the long-dead flesh of the Dreadnaught. Rousing ancient, Taken wills… hungry with ambition."
- — Eris Morn
At some point after the events of the Revenant Uprising, the Echo of Navigation deploys Eversion Anchors; objects capable of pulling the Ascendant Plane into the material world, across the system.[12] One of these anchors would land at the European Dead Zone on Earth where it would be detected by the Vanguard. Discerning that the Dreadnaught was the source of these objects, Eris Morn and Drifter would return to the Hive ship while the Guardian was tasked with investigating the anchor in the European Dead Zone. While Drifter recognized the artifact was creating holes into the Ascendant Plane, Eris suspected that the Taken were now serving a new master, yet did not believe that one of Oryx's sisters had claimed this mantle. Travelling to Hangman's Pass, the Guardian fights through the forces of the Dire Taken and arrives to the anchor's location at the top of the mountain. Discovering that the anchor was attempting an Eversion of Earth, the Guardian defeats its protector and travels through the anchor.[9]
Arriving into Ascendant space, the Guardian navigates across the many obstacles of this plane of existence, including enigmatic tentacles, to eventually enter a portal that transports them to the Trenchway on the Dreadnaught. Regaining connection with the Guardian's signal after their arrival, Eris and Drifter reveal that they had discovered one of the Tablets of Ruin that Oryx had used to inscribe the secrets of how to Take. Additionally, Drifter ordered the Guardian to maintain their position while he and Eris eliminated the Taken forces in their proximity. After the duo dispatched the Taken in the Hall of Souls, Eris nearly collapsed after sensing a familiar and overpowering presence. Recognizing the urgency of this matter, Eris alerted Drifter that they must reunite with the Guardian. However, they would be ambushed by a Dire Taken detachment led by the Resonant Knife. While the Taken targeted Drifter, the Resonant Knife would horrifyingly overpower Eris and ultimately empale her with its glaive, much to Drifter's horror. The Taken Subjugator would then drag Eris's body and delve deeper into the Dreadnaught with Drifter pursuing them.[13]
Meanwhile, the Guardian travels into the Hall of Souls where they defeat Felghul the Requisitioner to acquire the Tablet of Ruin. Although Drifter reaches the Resonant Knife at the Mausoleum, he would be slain as its power proved to be too immense. Eventually, the Guardian arrives to the Mausoleum where discover strange Taken eyes and confront the Resonant Knife as it conducts a ritual. Destroying the Blights around a Crux of Darkness, the Guardian forces the Resonant Knife to retreat, allowing Drifter's Ghost to resurrect him safely. Upon being resurrected, Drifter would crawl over to Eris's body only to realize that his close accomplice had perished. However, unbeknownst to anyone, Eris would awaken within her Throne World that she had unknowingly created when she had slain Savathûn as the God of Vengeance.[13][14]
Harnessing Taken Power[edit]
In the wake of Eris's "death," Drifter contacts the Guardian to inform them that Eris had left them a final message in her apartment in the event of her death. Returning to the Last City, the Guardian enters Eris's apartment in the Variisis Core and listens to her final message where she expresses her gratitude for her closest companions in the form of Ikora Rey, Mara Sov, Zavala, Drifter, and the Guardian for the joy they brought her throughout her journey.[15] After listening to Eris's departing message, the Guardian peers into the artifact known as the Shaping Slab in the apartment to converse with Sloane. The Deputy Commander informs the Young Wolf that she had been tasked by Ikora with striking against the Dread aboard the Dreadnaught to avenge Eris.[16] To uncover the secrets aboard the Dreadnaught, the Guardian is dispatched to uncover additional information about the anchors and to suppress the spread of Taken corruption.[17][18][19]
Ultimately, the Guardian succeeds at gathering the data and Sloane would subsequently asked the Guardian to meet with her at the Spine of Keres. Meeting together at the Spine's approach, Sloane remarks that the anchor in the EDZ is in their proximity. Furthermore, she affirms that they must return the anchor to the Dreadnaught by learning how to channel Taken power, beginning with undergoing the Path of Resolve. Travelling towards the Spine, the Guardian battles through Dire Taken while strange Taken eyes observing their actions. Thanks to Sloane's instructions, the Guardian interacts with a Taken Blight and learns how to absorb Taken energy without losing control.[20] Sloane would then assign the Guardian with returning to the Dreadnaught while Drifter was tasked with gathering intel on the anchors.[21] Returning to the Shaping Slab in the apartment, the Guardian acquires the Tome of Want.[22]
The Witch's Warning[edit]
During his reconnaissance for anchors in the system, Drifter detected energy from the Dreadnaught being wrenched into the Court of Savathûn. To investigate this matter, Drifter covertly dispatches the Guardian to the Witch Queen's domain thanks to the assistance of Luzaku and Fynch. While the Guardian traveled towards the source of Taken energy in the Temple of the Cunning, Drifter concluded that the source of energy was an Eversion Anchor. Internalizing Savathûn's omniscient knowledge of her throne, Drifter recognized that the Hive God wanted the anchor in her domain for an unknown reason. When the Guardian proceeded into the centre of the temple, the Taken Blights dissipated as Savathûn materialized. She disclosed that Immaru was back by her side after escaping Vanguard custody and offered her condolences for the loss of Eris Morn. However, Savathûn would warn them to stay away from the Dreadnaught and Xivu Arath as it was a family matter before departing. Following the Hive God's warning, Drifter would contact the Guardian where he expressed his frustration over Savathûn's taunts.[23]
Regardless of Savathûn's threat, Sloane remained committed to continuing their operations aboard the Dreadnaught and would send the Guardian to acquire data from the Skyburners aboard the Dreadnaught.[24] Examining the data acquired from the Skyburners, Sloane determined that the anchors were weapons similar to the Dreadnaught's deactivated superweapon and would begin to study the data with Drifter to formulate a plan to interface the ship's systems.[25]
The Taken Path[edit]
Sometime during the hunt for the Echo of Navigation, the splintering identities of Xir-Kuur would generate two energy signatures in the Core of Corruption in the Dreadnaught. During their exploration aboard the Dreadnaught, the Guardian discovers a Taken Osseous Fragment and delivers the artifact to Sloane. Following an inspection of the fragment by Síocháin, Sloane tasks the Guardian to acquire another fragment on the Moon.[26] To see past the Hive's ability to conceal the fragments locations, the Guardian acquires a Scotopic Rune.[27] Travelling to the K1 Revelation on the Moon, the Guardian stamps out the Dire Taken infestation and claims the fragment.[28] The Guardian continues their search by acquiring a second fragment in the Veles Labyrinth in the Cosmodrome,[29] and a third fragment on the Dreadnaught after breaking Taken curses.[30] Leveraging the three fragments acquired, Sloane triangulates the location's signal deep within the Dreadnaught and tasks the Guardian with obtaining a final fragment that will allow them to triangulate the signature's location.[31][32]
Touching down on the Mausoleum, the Guardian engages with a Dread detachment also pursuing the source led by the Subjugator, Vrhiisk, Seeker of Power. Following Vrhiisk's disengagement from the confrontation, the Guardian pursues Vrhiisk to the Trenchway, where the Subjugator had turned against its own troops in favor of aligning with the Dire Taken. Empowering themselves with a Taken curse, the Guardian battles Vrhiisk and slays the Subjugator within a Blighted Cyst. Escaping the Cyst, the Guardian acquires the final fragment and delves into the Invasion Bay where the signal begins to grow stronger. Eventually, the Guardian enters into Core of Corruption and retrieves the weapon known as the Barrow-Dyad. However, Sloane recognizes that the weapon was not the source of the signal as the Guardian is ambushed by Dire Taken led by the two identities of Xir-Kuur. While Xir-Kuur's Hive identity is slain, his Taken identity becomes consumed in a Taken Blight and re-emerges after taking a new shape. Following Sloane's instructions, the Guardian seals the Core of Corruption and banishes Xir-Kuur's Taken identity from the material plane.[32]
