Act I: Echoed Warnings is the main quest for Episode: Heresy Act I.
Steps[edit]
![]() |
Step 1[edit]
You received an assignment to investigate a Taken disturbance in the EDZ near Hangman's Pass.
This is no mere Taken incursion. Something deeper is driving them.
- Investigate the Taken neutrino burst found near Hangman's Pass.
- Hangman's Pass investigated
- "There is a connection anchoring these Taken… something within the Ascendant Deep."
- — Eris Morn
Step 2[edit]
Upon touching the Eversion Anchor you discovered in Hangman's Pass you were ripped into Ascendant space—a compressed linkage between the Anchor and the Dreadnaught.
You leapt from Earth, across the stars and into the rings of Saturn to board the Dreadnaught in mere minutes!
This link must be investigated further, and its danger assessed.
Along the way, you felt an unsettling presence resonating through the Ascendant Plane.
- Rendezvous with Drifter and Eris in the depths of the Dreadnaught.
- Drifter & Eris found
Step 3[edit]
- Drifter: I don’t know if you can… stand to hear my voice right now. I was there. I was— Sorry. [clears his throat] Eris had a message for her "knife". You keen on a little vengeance, killer? She kept plans for times like this — piles of balled-up scribbled paper and ink, in her old place in the City. Hadn't been staying there for a while, but… it's full of her things. You've probably walked by it a hundred times. I'll send you a pin. Whatever she left you there, you take it up, and you kill what killed her. I'll throw my cannon in on that too. Aiat, or… whatever, just… get it done.
The City mourns.
Eris Morn is dead, slain by a Dread Subjugator while investigating the revival of the Dreadnaught.
She has left something for you in her City apartment.
- Eris is dead. She left something for you in her apartment in Last City. Go, and honor her memory.
- Apartment visited
- Eris Morn: I have fallen, but I know that my life was not forfeit from inaction or fear. No. Mine was a life of ambition. Ambition, and triumph. Brya's last gift to me was not squandered. I will speak my last words to those I have left behind. Ikora. I treasured your trust, and the faith that came with time. Thank you for everything you shared with me. Mara. My Queen. You saw my capabilities when few could. And… you embraced me for what I was. Know that I am grateful. Zavala. For a time, you saw me as an omen. But you came to trust me again, and accepted my help. I was glad of it. Drifter… We found comfort in each other. Grieve, but carry that comfort with you. Do not let this loss define you. And to the Guardian. You granted me my vengeance and my solace. Thank you, truly. I sought joy, at the end, and I found it. In myself and in my friendships. And so, in your grief, remember me thusly: I was a woman who slayed dragons and brought the Hive its its knees. A woman who claimed vengeance as her nature and saw it satisfied. This is the fate I made for myself. I have settled my regrets. Farewell.
Step 4[edit]
- Peer into the Shaping Slab and obtain a Tablet of Ruin.
- Tablet obtained
- Sloane: Guardian… Ikora sent me. I'll be assuming operational command here to strike back against the Dread that took Eris from us… I… You're hurting. I am too. We lost a soldier and a friend. But I've got you. Take a moment — more if you need 'em — and then suit up, because we're going back. We have the Vanguard's full blessing to unleash hell — Ikora's words. There's a wall of Taken between us and an answer on the Dreadnaught, changing, and we don't have any intel. I bet you're raring to break right through it. So here's the plan: Attack. Kick in the front door, honor Eris with vengeance, and crush whatever is going on before it gets any worse. Remember Eris. Remember what she meant. Remember what the Taken stole from us. What they thought was weakness, we turn to strength. Keep that pain close. We're gonna use it to start a fire in the Dreadnaught and burn every last Taken out.
Eris Morn's final message awaits…
Step 5[edit]
- The Vanguard are reeling from the death of a team member, and Oryx has returned to threaten humanity once again. Unlock Episode: Heresy to take the fight back to the Taken, avenge Eris, tighten your grasp of Taken power, and uncover the mysteries of the blight-ridden Dreadnaught.
- Episode: Heresy
Step 6[edit]
Mission Dossier: Blight from Beyond
Venture into the Nether to assess and stem the spread of corruption.
Gather recon by clearing encounters and slaying enemies within the Nether.
- Accept Mission Dossier: Blight from Beyond at the Shaping Slab in the Last City.
- Mission Dossier: Blight from Beyond
Step 7[edit]
Mission Dossier: Blight from Beyond
You brought vengeance to every Dread and Taken you encountered and were able to gather valuable tactical data for the Deputy Commander.
However, the source of the Taken scourge and what the Dread are planning to do with Oryx's ship remain a mystery.
- Venture into the Nether to assess and stem the spread of corruption. Gather recon by clearing encounters and slaying enemies within the Nether.
- Combatant recon: x/20
- Dark ritual recon: x/3
- "We need more intel. See what you can uncover but be careful… and take someone to watch your back."
- — Deputy Commander Sloane
Step 8[edit]
You have begun to walk the Path of Resolve and put a stop to an Anchor incursion within the Dreaming City.
Whether the Anchor was meant to draw in the Taken already there, or flood the Reef with new horrors will—thanks to your efforts—never be known.
- Follow Sloane's mentorship and complete the "Trial of Will: Resolve," located at The Spine of Keres.
- Path of Resolve walked
- Sloane: We kicked in the front door to the Dreadnaught all right, but something in there is keeping us from pushing deeper. I—I was afraid of this. If we're going to stop the Taken, I’ll need you to follow me down a dangerous path. We can start by getting eyes on that anchor point you found in the EDZ. They're obviously connected.
- The Guardian approaches the Spine of Keres.
- Sloane: Guardian, ready for some fieldwork? This one might not be… by the book. That anchor that took you to the Dreadnaught is close. You're going to turn it into our weapon. This is how we avenge Eris. This is how we force these Taken anchors right back down the Dreadnaught's throat. Head there, and what control I've learned over my own blight, I'll teach to you.
- The Guardian pushes forward.
- Sloane: You'll have to make a path to the anchor. Get to it.
- The Guardian feels a sense of suffocating terror.
- Sloane: That thing makes me uneasy… I… can't stand looking at it, even through the feed. Síocháin says it's radiating corrosive energy like what I tapped into on Titan. Damn… You'll need to soak in it, but not too much or you'll die. Remember: focus, control, resolve.
- The Guardian clears the Taken.
- Sloane: Park it here. Let's get a look at what we're dealing with. Okay. We know it's connected to the Dreadnaught somehow, and it funnels Taken shock troops to corrupt the surface. You're going to bend that corruption into a feedback loop. Steel your mind. Make your way to the target, and listen to every word I tell you.
- The Guardian clears more Taken.
- Sloane: I've learned that being Taken is all about control. You have to keep the idea of who you are intact, and shrug off anything telling you otherwise. Taken offer themselves, by choice. You will, too, but not fully. You'll extend your hand, and grip their power in your fist until it submits. Remember what you want, will it into truth — just like you do with the Light. Let it temper your resolve. If you can do that, you'll survive. If you can't… then I guess we'll finally know who'd win an arm-wrestling match between us.
- The Guardian interacts with the Blight.
- Sloane: There's… something else! Fight it! Focus, now hold… and pull back! That's it. You ripped it out by the roots… and absorbed some of its energy. You're not blighted like me, but it's enough to impose your will and use their power. We'll keep refining, keep tapping into it. For now, you’re ready to hit the Dreadnaught again.
Step 9[edit]
- Sloane: You've taken your first steps into a very deep well. The Dreadnaught isn't going to hold back. And as long as it can use those anchors like weapons, neither can we. Lots of things push a person to seek out being Taken. Loss, weakness, power, revenge. It's important to remember that the promises the Deep makes you are just bad deals. Don't let yourself get wrapped up in them. Control and reserve. Stick to the plan, and we'll all see this through. I've got Drifter doing anchor recon. If he turns anything up, I'll give you a call. Until then, keep squeezing.
- Visit the Shaping Slab within Eris's apartment in the Last City.
- Shaping Slab visited
Your form reflects in Taken sheen…
You have begun to walk the Path of Resolve with the Deputy Commander's guidance, and through your contact with the Anchor incursion, you learned valuable information about the linkage to the Dreadnaught's systems.
Wielding Taken power is a risk, but one you can withstand if it means holding back the surge of blight spilling from the Dreadnaught.
Though… you cannot deny that you feel stronger.
Step 10[edit]
The Tome of Want is an Ascendant relic of immense power. It allows the shaping of desire into purpose.
With it and Sloane's guidance, you will hone your Taken power and press ever deeper into the Dreadnaught, toward the source of the blighting scourge.
- Continue walking the Path of Resolve, hone your Taken power, and draw forth the Tome of Want from the Shaping Slab. This powerful relic will further increase your potential, steel your mind against corruption, and repurpose the shape of desire into the shape of being.
- Tome of Want acquired
Step 11[edit]
You have obtained the Tome of Want but as blight and corruption overflow from Saturn, the Dreadnaught still requires your attention.
- Train your mind in the rituals of the Tome of Want as Deputy CMDR Sloane assesses the intel you've recovered.
Step 12[edit]
- Sloane: Guardian, the Drifter's recon dredged up some intel.
- Drifter: I'll keep it short. Energy's getting yanked on down from the Dreadnaught into Savathûn's throne world — a whole damn lot of it. Maybe she knows something we don't. Maybe… we can beat it out of her. Either way, sure ain't for nothing good.
- Sloane: Guardian, you're on point. Get boots on the ground and investigate. Drifter, overwatch and comms.
- Drifter: Yeah, yeah… I know how it goes.
Mission Dossier: Anchored Thrones
You were tasked with investigating a potential Anchor incursion that would link Savathûn's throne world to the Dreadnaught.
This information came to you by way of a "Luzaku," who claimed to be a friend and bids you to "walk in the Sky."
- A Lucent Hive collaborator has alerted Deputy Commander Sloane to a possible Anchor incursion in Savathûn's throne world. It needs to be dealt with.
- Mission: Anchored Thrones
- "I don't trust the Lucent Hive at all, but Drifter checked the lead and vouched for them."
- — Deputy Commander Sloane
- Sloane: Guardian, the Drifter's recon dredged up some intel.
- Drifter: I'll keep it short. Energy's getting yanked on down from the Dreadnaught into Savathûn's throne world — a whole damn lot of it. Maybe she knows something we don't. Maybe… we can beat it out of her. Either way, sure ain't for nothing good.
- Sloane: Guardian, you're on point. Get boots on the ground and investigate. Drifter, overwatch and comms.
- Drifter: Yeah, yeah… I know how it goes.
- The Guardian heads to Savathûn's throne world.
- Drifter: Hey, killer. Luzaku and Fynch got us in here without Savathûn knowin'. But she'll get all three eyes on us soon enough. Which is fine by me — I'm spoilin' for a fight.
- Luzaku: This one knows not the answers you seek, but understands your anger.
- Drifter: I doubt that, wormbreath. Just stay out of our way.
- The Guardian heads down towards the source of Taken energy.
- Drifter: There's a tangle of Taken energy down in the Temple of Cunning. Everything points to a new Eversion Anchor — same as the one in the EDZ. Nothin' happens down here without Savathûn's say-so. She must want it for a reason. Got no idea how it fits in with the Dreadnaught, though.
- Luzaku: Neither does this one. But in time, all things can be revealed.
- The Guardian approaches the Temple of the Wrathful.
- Drifter: The anchors move through the Ascendant Plane like a knife through Taken butter. No easy thing. It's hard to punch a hole; even harder to keep it open. But cutting right through a throne world? Those are like barnacles on the backside of the Ascendant Plane. That kinda power makes me nervous.
- The Guardian approaches the Temple of Cunning.
- Drifter: There it is. Just as creepy as you left it.
- Luzaku: Walk in the Sky, Guardians.
- Savathûn arrives.
- Savathûn: You just can't stop meddling, can you? You Guardians destroy everything you can't control. This is my world. My throne. Nothing exists here without my say-so. Including you… So, in light of recent events, I believe we have a few things to discuss. Immaru thanks you for your hospitality, but our transaction is concluded. My Ghost is back at my side, where he belongs. He told me everything. Oh, Eris! What a loss. Poor dear is in a better place. That's what Humans say, isn't it? To comfort each other? Is that comforting? There. That's over and done with; respects paid, condolences offered. Now I have a warning for my favorite Guardian. Stay away from my brother's Dreadnaught. Stay away from my sister. This is a family matter. And nothing is gained by making an enemy of me. I think Eris would agree. Now leave.
- Ghost projects Drifter's image.
- Drifter: You gonna listen to that? You're gonna let Savathûn talk about Eris like she knew her? You knew her. She never looked away from danger. Always got right into the thick of things. Y'know, she found something in me I thought I'd… lost. Now she's dead. And what she found's dead too. I just can't shake it. That bone-deep feeling. And I felt it before. She's gone… because I cared.
Step 13[edit]
- Search the Nether for any remnants of the Skyburners' deep-scan data, which can be found in chests and jars throughout the Nether.
- Recovered Skyburner Data: x/12
- "We're not staying off the Dreadnaught and leaving whatever's churning in there until it's too late to do anything about it. The Hive can settle their family spats on their own time. It's been too long since we commanded those halls. Guardian, I need you and whatever guns at your disposal on mission to do a little data recovery. There's an old Cabal legion that never made it off Oryx's ship, but they survived a long time. Find their logs, and lets learn a little more about what we're into."
- — Deputy Commander Sloane
Step 14[edit]
- Sloane: So, the anchors are weapons. Like the one Oryx used at the Battle of Saturn. Classic, typical. Every damn thing near the Hive gets sharpened into a shiv at some point. [sighs] Well, we're making progress. We've got more of the Dreadnaught mapped now than ever, stopped every blight from taking form, and your resolve is iron. We've disabled the Dreadnaught's weaponry before. We can do it again. Savathûn can make all the threats she wants. I want you back on that ship. Track down the Echo while Drifter and I do some digging. I think some of the intel you've turned up details how to interface with the Dreadnaught's systems… I'll look into it.
You've discovered a connection between the Eversion Anchors and the Dreadnaught's long deactivated weapon.
If the link exists, the weapon could be operable again. Maybe this is what the Dread are attempting to do.
Your resolve has been strengthened by subsuming and wielding Taken power.
- Visit the Shaping Slab in the Last City.
- Shaping Slab visited
Your form reflects Taken sheen…
The knowledge that Eversion Anchors are linked to the Dreadnaught's weapon, and not just loci for the Taken to pour from, means their threat cannot be simply contained like a blight. It must be destroyed.
Step 15[edit]
You await our next move.
- Ponder the Tome of Want and employ your new powers to drive back the scourge of Taken and Dread in the Nether while Sloane formulates a plan.
Step 16[edit]
- Drifter: Hey, pick up. You're running with me on this hack job. You know how Hive computers work? Biotech. Your good-for-nothing Ghost buddy can't crack that code. But I figured it out, thanks to a few friends in low places — some graves. And Osiris gave me a few tips. Sounds like he's got experience. Weird dude. All we need is a few bloody stumps. Forwarding your first target, killer.
Sloane has a plan to hit the Dreadnaught and nullify the risk from the Eversion Anchors; but first, she needs you to get access codes by completing the "Hive Hacking" quests.
- Deputy Commander Sloane has a plan to hit the Dreadnaught and nullify the Eversion Anchors. Open Sloane's dossier at the Shaping Slab and acquire the "Hive Hacking" quests.
Step 17[edit]
To access the Hive biosystems aboard the Dreadnaught, we need high-ranking biological signatures from Hive that were part of Oryx's brood.
It's gruesome, but you've been tasked with retrieving the Hive limbs necessary to access the Dreadnaught and disable its weapon's connection to the Eversion Anchors. Drifter is finding the targets.
- Complete the "Hive Hacking" side quests to gather the necessary codes to access the Dreadnaught biosystems.
- Mission Dossier: Hive Hacking, Cultist's Limb
- Mission Dossier: Hive Hacking, Blade Navigator's Head
- Mission Dossier: Hive Hacking, Lightsinger's Limb
- "It's gruesome, but necessary. Make sure you get what you need before they burn up."
- — Deputy CMDR Sloane
Step 18[edit]
- Board the Dreadnaught and disable the weapon. Complete the mission "Kludge."
- Dreadnaught weapon link disabled
Step 19[edit]
- Escape the Dreadnaught and survive to tell the tale.
- The Dreadnaught survived
Step 20[edit]
You succeeded in taking down the link between the Dreadnaught's weapon systems and the Eversion Anchors, but in the process discovered that the Echo of Navigation is none other than an embodiment of Oryx, the Taken King himself!
Oryx's sisters seek to claim the Echo and forced you to retreat.
- Return to Eris's Apartment in the Last City. A private call signal awaits you there.
- Drifter's call received
- Drifter: [sighs] Figured I owed you an explanation before I went dark. I'll make it quick. I tried to find a way to… bring her back. Heh. Don't ask me what I did, but… it didn't work. So I thought to myself, hey, I got what I always got. What's left for me, anyway? Nothin'. Knew it'd happen again. I was a fool to hope. But I couldn't help myself. I just wanted you to know, well… it's nothing personal. It's all me. This is who I am. Always has been. So don't come lookin'. I was already halfway gone.
Step 21[edit]
- Visit the Shaping Slab in Eris's apartment in the Last City.
- Shaping Slab visited
- Sloane: Now we know what we're dealing with. An Echo of the Navigator. A—a memory of Oryx, and not the one we remember. He woke up the Dreadnaught and launched the anchors. The Taken are here because of him. And the Dread are working with him. His "knife". Eris' killer. But you've caught Oryx's attention. The Echo didn't know you killed him. Now he does. And he's… impressed. That means he's distracted. He wants to test you. Use that. Right now, Xivu Arath and Savathûn are mobilising. Their brother's flagship is a battlefield. And Drifter's gone. We have twice the trouble and half the support. Losing Eris was hard on him. We show who we are in hard times. We can't afford to lose focus or lose ground. We need intel. We need you back on the Dreadnaught. Find out what you can. We must destroy the Echo. It can't be allowed to exist. Sounds impossible, doesn't it? But you've killed Oryx once. You'll do it again.
Your form reflects in Taken sheen…
The Taken King is a fearsome foe, especially when backed by the Dread, Xivu Arath, and Savathûn.
But this is not the Oryx you remember. This is a shade, an impression of him left on the Witness and born through the Echo's power.
You must sharpen your will and load your weapons. For now, all that can be done is to contain this threat. Take the shape of violence and bring that purpose to your foes.
- Sloane: Damn it, Drifter, get back here. You're better than this. It's not going to help. We both know running doesn't stop the dead haunting you. Can't say I'd do the same thing, but… I guess I've thought about it a time or two. But you're the one who told me, "some things, you carry with you forever." Eris Morn's one of those things. You think she'd be proud of you taking off? Call me when you get this. I mean it. Situation's getting worse here. Hive god worse. We need you. If nothing else, for vengeance. In her honor. Let's make that weight a little easier to lift.
