- "Father didn't have employees. Or assistants. And for that matter, he didn't have heroes either. Every person, living or lost, was a collaborator, and that included his children."
- — Clovis Bray II[2]
Clovis Bray (abbreviated as C.B. in its logo)[3] was a Golden Age exoscience corporation founded by Clovis Bray I.[2] Clovis Bray I himself and his progeny, the House Bray, played key roles in the corporation's research and technological advancements, including the development of Engrams, SIVA, the Warmind Rasputin and the creation of Exos. Having vast resources at its disposal, the corporation built many research installations across the Solar System.
Overview[edit]
Clovis Bray was responsible for the construction of the Dust Palace on Mars,[4] funding and subsequent construction of Freehold. The Crucible map Blind Watch is located atop an old Clovis Bray facility on the outskirts of the city,[5] and Skyline is situated within the Clovis Bray Health Center.[6] The corporation also helped fund a colony and create laboratories and factories in the frozen moon of Europa during the Golden Age. After the Collapse, the Fallen House of Salvation started looting the ruins of Clovis Bray colony and laboratories.[citation needed]
History[edit]
Founded by Clovis Bray I during the Golden Age, the Clovis Bray corporation was responsible for a number of cutting-edge scientific and technological breakthroughs throughout the Golden Age, with some of its most notable achievements including the Warmind Rasputin and at least two powerful and versatile swarm nanorobotics-based technologies, "Transmission" and SIVA.[citation needed]
While Transmission was intended to enhance the strength, speed, and intelligence of prospective colonists using nanomachines, SIVA used nanomachines to break down matter and reconstitute it to rapidly construct entire cities. With the Transmission project eventually being shuttered after it caused unforeseen side effects in test subjects, Clovis Bray focused entirely on SIVA, which was subsequently completed and approved for deployment.[7] During SIVA's development, Dr. Zarin Shirazi's confidence in SIVA's capabilities led her to neglect adding safety measures such as a kill switch. Following an incident where a test subject was made mute by the effects of SIVA, however, Zarin resolved to propose a failsafe for future nanotech development.[8] Upon SIVA's completion, the first SIVA replication chamber, Site 6, was built within the Cosmodrome in order to outfit the colony ships.[9]
Clovis Bray also worked on a variety of secret projects during the late Golden Age, with some of the most notable being the development of Vex-based AI systems at Vesper Station around Europa[10] and the Ares Spire facility on Mars,[11] as well as "Project ECHO", a planned colony mission intended to set out for the Andromeda Galaxy,[12] which also seemingly included a contingency protocol which would partition Rasputin into twelve segments and store them in "pillory" facilities, including Caelus Station around Uranus, if the Warmind went rogue.[13]
Activities on Europa[edit]
Following the visions he received from the paracausal force he knew as "Clarity", Clovis Bray I traveled to Europa in search of immortality, and founded the Bray Exoscience research facility and Eventide colony to further the development and implementation of the Exomind program.[citation needed] The researchers who worked there had little regard for ethics, and the studies conducted often led to the deaths of some or all test subjects involved.[citation needed]
Through the use of a Vex gate constructed by a captive Vex specimen stolen from the Ishtar Collective, Clovis Bray was able to collect radiolaria, which when exposed to "Clarity" yielded a miraculous substance Clovis Bray I termed "alkahest" that was able to solve the issue of Dissociative Exomind Rejection that plagued the first Exos.[citation needed] However, an army of Vex began spilling out of the gate, leading to many casualties and forcing Elisabeth Bray and Clovis-43 to close the facility and its associated colony.[citation needed]
Post-Collapse[edit]
By the time of the City Age, the work and surviving records of Clovis Bray had attained a near-mythical reputation, with some going so far as to assert that the corporation single-handedly sustained the Golden Age and was an epitome of innovation.[14] During the Owl Sector's investigation of the Transmission incident, however, previously suppressed Clovis Bray records were uncovered, revealing the conglomerate to be more reckless in their pursuit of new advances than previously assumed.[7]
Arsenal[edit]
Clovis Bray and its subsidiaries have developed and manufactured a wide variety of weapons, armor, and other equipment throughout humanity's history. While some of these technologies date back to the Golden Age and have survived into the City Age, others were developed or reproduced in later eras, continuing the legacy of Clovis Bray's technological advancements. Many of these weapons and pieces of equipment remain in use by Guardians today.
