Lore[edit]
LET THE SANDS PASS UNTOUCHED BELOW YOU.
The newer apprentices flinched when Dredgen Sere swept into the hall for their lesson.
At the back of the hall, one lone apprentice moved not a muscle. Darkness didn't scare her.
Before her apprenticeship began, she had been Thahaaz; her Ghost had been Beetle, a curious thing eager to befriend the Hive. Beetle was dead now, chitinous shell crushed and swept away just like the apprentice's name. If she was strong enough, she'd earn a better one.
"I will tell you what Dredgen Bael told me," Sere said. "'Know thyself in honest ways, or falter in light of your truest self.'"
"You," he gestured to one Barant student at the front: a former Legionary still in his Imperial armor. The hall was filled with people just like him, soldiers who only knew how to hold a gun.
"Do you know yourself?"
"I do."
"Then show me!"
The Barant gathered Darkness around himself. It seemed strong for one soap-bubble moment—then it was gone, unable to stand the greater pressure of Sere's answering power.
"To be a Dredgen is to have will!" Sere roared. "A self, honed and pure! You are nothing but a body pretending to be a person!"
Sere twisted his hand. Shadows gathered, and he appeared to grow larger, as though he were too big to be contained in just one room. This was no fragile bubble, but shadow and will, as dense as osmium. It battered at them all.
A whisper rose under his power—just at the edge of perception. At the edge of comprehension.
Sere opened his hand and let the nameless Barant body fall.
"There is much work ahead of us," he said, very softly. "Even now, Bael's chosen dig for truths under Luna and beyond. If you hope to count yourselves among them, you must earn your place."
The apprentice who had been Thahaaz lifted her chin in determination.
