Steps[edit]
Part 1[edit]
This part of the quest is available for all players.
Step 1[edit]
This section is a stub. You can help Destinypedia by expanding it.
Step 2[edit]
Speak with Commander Zavala at the Tower.
- Zavala visited
Commander Zavala needs to be made aware of the threat Drifter and the crew have uncovered.
- Zavala: Guardian… you know fully well this mission is not above board. I understand the Imperium is clearly a threat, but I cannot overemphasize that my hands are tied. After the Witness, don't the people deserve a moment of peace? It is our privilege to carry the mantle of this threat. Let the people live their lives. I understand your conviction. And I wish I had the power to authorize engagement on my own. But… I can't. When I was younger, in the Dark Age, I was taught a path forward is often cleared with unconventional methods. Those methods… are tempered by structure and order. That is how we earned the City Age. It's what we try to preserve. My focus must remain on preventing extinction. I cannot look elsewhere — I WON'T look elsewhere — so long as nothing seizes my attention. I trust you'll… comply, Guardian.
Step 3[edit]
Speak with Drifter at Tharsis Cantina.
- Drifter visited
You've escaped from the Imperium, for now, and received Commander Zavala's reluctant blessing to confront them. However, Drifter is certain the Nine are involved in their sudden rise in the system. Speak to Drifter in the Tharsis Cantina to learn more.
The Drifter is certain that the Nine are involved with the Barant Imperium, controlling them through Bael. They've shown him a new vision, which's about to share with you…
- Drifter: You and Aunor make a pretty good fireteam, hero. Even if you did use my face as a barricade. And now that we got that Imperium disk in hand — we're gonna need more than one hard-headed Praxic to decrypt it. We're gonna need the local crime syndicates. I've got some irons in the fire with Spider for an intro. Fellow miscreants like that one respect two things: Money and blood. We'll get you set up on buildin' a reputation for yourself out here on Tharsis, gaining leverage on the local miscreants. But as the Nine Weapon, there’s something you gotta know, first. I know I sold you on this job as a scam on the Imperium… but you heard on that ship what I’ve known all along. The Nine are backing the Imperium at the top. They surprised me with that junior Dredgen, but — they’re pulling his strings, too. I've had the same nightmare since Kepler. A vision that runs and smells and tastes on repeat every time I close my eyes. Hand to my heart, I know the threat. If I don’t do it, they hurt her. Back on that ship…
{Cutscene begins}
- A jade coin falls into the palm of a statue of the Drifter.
- Drifter: Bael knew me as a Dredgen. Heard stories of the sad old days and… wanted a close-up look. Thought that was all there was to connect us.
- The image shifts to the Drifter, wielding Thorn, standing with a group of Guardians. Tendrils of dark matter energy begins to surround them in the background.
- Drifter: But there's more. Couple months ago, I had this vision.
- The image shifts to the Drifter holding a jade coin with the symbols of the Nine on it. The tendrils of dark matter energy shift into the same symbols as chains with the cores of Ghosts with green eyes, similar to those Bael has hanging on his waist.
- Drifter: Didn't know if I was cracking up or what. Because when I came to… I tasted granite and battery acid.
- The Drifter turns in shock to see Bael behind him with his Praxic Blade drawn.
- Drifter: And I knew… I KNEW it came from the Nine.
- The camera zooms in on Bael's mask and transitions to multiple Drifters in a space with Nine architecture. One Drifter stands before a doorway.
- Drifter: Today? That same voice spoke through Bael. Never gonna get that taste out of my mouth. Just… listen before you judge, all right? They told me…
- One Drifter climbs a staircase to a hole that's glowing red.
- Bael as VI: ATTEND MY EXEGESIS
- The Drifter falls down a series of hexagonal rings as another climbs onto a platform.
- Bael as VI: ESCHATON IS COMING
- I AM INFORMING YOU OF YOUR PATH
- The Drifter explores the space and finds a door before reaching into a black void.
- Bael as VI: BECAUSE FUTURITY DICTATES
- NOW IS WHEN YOU ARE INFORMED
- LITTLE MANIKIN OF FLESH AND FEAR
- NOT MADE TO SEE YOUR END
- A fragmented statue of the Drifter reaches out.
- Bael as VI: THE OUTER PERSPECTIVE WIDENS
- WE KNOW YOUR BINARY OPTION
- WE KNOW THE ZERO YOU CHOOSE
- Multiple Drifters reach out to several lit openings as one walks into a white opening.
- Bael as VI: YOU WILL RELINQUISH YOUR INSUPPORTABLE BURDEN AND KNOW PEACE
- A red laser cuts through the Traveler. The scene then transitions to show red energy materializing Barant Imperium soldiers, Harvesters, Goliath Tanks and Land Tanks. Dredgen Bael stands at the front reaching out to the Drfiter, with Blue next to him and Thorn in his hand.
- Bael as VI: YOU WILL JOIN THE SHADOW
- RAISE HIS TOOLS AGAINST WHAT WRONGED YOU
- BANISH THE LIGHT
- SAVE YOURSELF FROM FOREVER
- The camera pans to show a large mass of Guardians to face them. The Drifter pulls the trigger, blowing a hole in the chest of a Titan. The camera zooms through the hole showing a battle between the Guardians and the Barant Imperium. Osiris is shown being gunned down, Ikora is struck in the chest with a red blast and Saint-14 is impaled by a Centurion's wrist blade.
- Bael as VI: BLINDED SMALL THING
- FREEDOM LIVES IN THE FOREORDAINED
- ONE HEART WITHIN YOUR BODY
- A dying Ghost lands in a field of other Ghosts and dead Guardians. The light in their eyes go out as the Drifter stands atop a mountain of other Ghosts with Blue in his hand. One impaled Guardian reaches out to him as Blue's light goes out and a giant Bael rises behind them.
- Bael as VI: ONE WITHOUT CHAINS THAT BIND YOUR FATE
- BREAK THEM BE FREE
- OR THE MAZE DOOR OPENS NEEDLESSLY TO DEEP-GRIEVED DEATH
{Cutscene ends}
Step 4[edit]
See if you can gain entry to the deeper Cantina and speak with the bouncer outside the Piker hangout.
- Piker bouncer visited
Crime syndicates on Mars seem to be prevalent in Tharsis Cantina. Explore the Cantina, and see what you can learn about these groups. They're made up of species that are typically hostile to humanity. But these gangs don't seem to be particularly aggressive—at least in town.
Piker Bouncer
Friend to Riliks. Not to you.
" The Piker guard laughs before the Guardian can even ask to enter. "Absolutely not. Go away." "
Step 5[edit]
Speak with Aunor in the Tharsis Cantina.
- Aunor visited
Seek out Aunor in the Cantina to learn more about Syndicate bosses and their organizations.
Aunor would like our help discovering what the newly emerged Dredgen Bael is up to, alongside the crime syndicates of Mars.
Start by assisting her in targeting syndicate operatives across the system to help discover their long-term plans.
- Aunor: Welcome to the new Mars. While the Vanguard was off fighting the good fight, the syndicates took over. Now the only law on Tharsis is the gun on your hip and the Light in your hands. You'll do well here. I don't relish doing business with these leeches, but we need to find out what the Dredgen are after. The only way to do that is by wading into the pond with the scum. Like the syndicates, and your sleazy friend, Drifter. Keep the syndicates in your gunsights, and take out their operatives across the system when you can. The more leverage we gain over them, the sooner we'll uncover the Dredgen's long-term plans.
Step 6[edit]
Speak with Drifter's Ghost at Tharsis Cantina.
- Drifter's Ghost visited
Drifter has told you that his Ghost would like to speak to you. He mentioned he thought he had been earning her trust lately, but she has something to ask you—help her get her voice back, which she lost helping the Drifter. See what you can do to assist.
Drifter's Ghost
Non-verbal.
" Drifter's Ghost makes a beeline towards you, peppering you with rapid-fire beeps from her modular armor. "
" She shakes her shell back and forth as she seems to realize you don't understand. "
" The Drifter might know how you can help. "
Step 7[edit]
Speak with Drifter at Tharsis Cantina.
- Drifter visited
See if Drifter can translate what his Ghost has been trying to communicate to you. She needs your help to get her voice back.
Drifter
An old renegade made good.
" "Been analyzing Imperium tech. There's an energy signature in it that may be anti-Light in nature." "
" "And my Ghost, Blue, picks today to go rebel on me. Thought I'd be behaving lately, too." "
" "She says she'd like your help getting her voice back online. She lost it helping me out a long time ago." "
" "Do her a solid, yeah? She's never asked me for this. Knab some kitbash parts 'round Tharsis." "
Step 8[edit]
Access the recording that Drifter left for you.
- Recording heard
Your Ghost informs you that Drifter has left you a tape—in physical cassette form, like in the old days. Find and access his recording.
- Note
- See Tape#Drifter's first message to the Guardian for full transcript.
Step 9[edit]
You've agreed to help Drifter's Ghost get her voice back, which she lost long ago helping her Guardian. Search for any raw materials you can find in Tharsis Bazaar that might be used for parts in the repairs.
- Tharsis Bazaar armorers searched
- Tharsis Bazaar scrap mercantile searched
- Tharsis Unpaired Ghost commune searched
Explore Tharsis Bazaar while keeping an eye out for anything that might serve as spare parts for Drifter's Ghost.
" You search the Tharsis merchant stalls for paracausal scrap matching Drfiter's specifications. "
" The armorers carry a collection of bleeding-edge personal protection and high-tech prosthesis… "
" You discover a few discarded parts, remnants of larger Golden Age relics long disassembled. "
" You hear Drifter crackle over comms: "One more place to check. Heard there's a Ghost colony in town." "
Berlioz
An old Tharsis hand.
" "Welcome to the Commune, Guardian! Berlioz at your service!" "
" "I teamed up with a couple of solo Ghosts such as myself, to carve a space out here." "
" "Drifter got us caught up on your situation. There's, uh… quite a few of us out here." "
" "We all pitched in to get you some parts you can use." "
" "Drifter's Ghost is a pro. With her voice back online, she’ll get you out of whatever trouble you're in." "
" "Anyway, we gotta get back to searching…" "
Step 10[edit]
Reach out to Spider for assistance in repairing the Drifter's Ghost. Find him in Tharsis Cantina.
- Spider visited
Despite some moderate success searching Tharsis Outpost, you still lack a complete set of components of to repair Drifter's ghost.
Perhaps Spider can help. Find him at Tharsis Cantina.
Spider chortles low and gleefully as you approach. "I've always liked Drifter's Ghost," he says. "She's the best thing about him! If she's finally looking to get her voice back, I'd be glad to help. For a small favor." He gestures towards the dark corners of his den. "My transport crews have failed me. I sent the into the Lawless Frontier to bring back hard-won contraband. If you'll venture out there, find my crew, and more importantly, my contraband—I'll make sure you obtain the Ghost parts you need.
Step 11[edit]
Complete mission "Welcome to the Frontier."
- Mission completed
Spider would like us to infiltrate the Lawless Frontier, a war zone on the outskirts of Tharsis, to find a missing courier crew that was transporting valuable cargo. In exchange, he has offered to help us secure materials necessary to repair Drifter's Ghost and restore her voice.
- Note
- See Welcome to the Frontier for full transcript.
Step 12[edit]
Speak to Spider in the Tharsis Cantina.
- Spider visited
You've exfiltrated successfully from the Lawless Frontier with Spider's package intact, after his courier crew was ambushed in the warzone. Go see Spider about the materials he owes you to help Drifter's Ghost repair her voice.
Spider leans back and guffaws into the air. "You enraged all three major syndicates in a single infiltration of the Lawless Frontier," he says gleefully. "Well done, renegade. Your reward: a few ontological materials Drifter's Ghost will need. Kitbash her with these, and she'll be good as new." He reaches out, four paws full of glittering, paracausal metals.
Step 13[edit]
Visit Drifter's Ghost at Tharsis Cantina.
- Drifter's Ghost visited
Spider has given us the final component we needed to repair Drifter's Ghost. Go seek her out at Tharsis Cantina.
"Years ago, my Ghost lost her voice when I got us into an ice-cold situation on one of the Cabal Emperor's Athenaeum worlds. A couple other Lights didn't make it out, but thanks to her, I did. Hand to my heart, I regret it—and I thought she and I were making progress, especially after Kepler. She's clearly holding some grudges, but—thanks for helping her just the same. Now let's see what we can do to take this fight to the Imperium."—The Drifter
- Drifter: Did it work?
- Blue: YOU DOORKNOB! You lousy, awful, stupid, waste-of-Light, bottom-feeding LEECH!
- Drifter: Hello to you, too.
- Blue: No, you disloyal, coin-flippin', Ghost-ditching, scraggly-beard two-timer! If you had a mom, she wouldn't call you! Oh, and the only time you;re sincere is when you’re askin' for money! And your headband makes you look like a line cook!
- Drifter: Guardian, thank you for fixing my Ghost. This is Blue. Named her because of that sunny personality.
- Blue: BITE ME. I need to talk to the Guardian. With my VOICE. That was, uh… well, that was healing. [laughs] Drifter and I have a complicated relationship. Scratch that, it's not complicated: He's a flake. No! Worse than a flake! He's a scoundrel. That data he stole? It wasn't any old data, it was plans for a superweapon: Nightfall Station. No idea on its payload. Drifter's sure the Imperium's connected to the Nine, and I think he's right. This tech—it's impossible. And that vision he showed you? It has him shook. Me too. Now he's shut away from me, from Eido, from Aunor—which I get—And Eris. The one person he let in. Watch him. I gave up my voice to save the Drifter once. I'm through keepin' my mouth shut.
Part 2[edit]
This part of the quest is available only for who have purchased the Renegades expansion.
Step 1[edit]
Listen to the recording.
- Recording heard
Drifter has left you another recording.
- Note
See Tape#Drifter's second message to the Guardian for full transcript.
Step 2[edit]
Speak to Spider in the Cantina.
- Spider visited
Speak to Spider to learn how the connections with the Syndicates can aid in striking back against the Imperium.
Spider hunches towards you eagerly. "You're in luck. The Pikers have agreed to a deal for a Splicer Shank under the condition that you go and help them with a little side project first."
"Go make your introduction with Riliks and see how you might be of service. They don't give their trust away lightly, but when Riliks respects you and your code? Perhaps we can manipulate them." Spider snickers lightly to himself.
Step 3[edit]
Speak with Riliks in the Cantina.
- Riliks visited
Listen to what Riliks has to say about the Pikers' latest venture.
" "Look at you. My Dregs could take you in an arm-wrestling contest! With their stumps." They laugh. "
" "This here's Piker territory. We're better Splicers than the Vex. Better mechanics than the Totality." "
" "We'll welcome anybody, caste or class no issue. Prove we can trust you, and what's ours is yours." "
" Riliks leans in. "And a little Shank told me you could use a Splicer… But the Imperium's on our backs." "
" They're building a weapon. Big. Bad for business. And your disk might be related. So I tell ya what…" "
" "Our best Splicer—barring me—hasn't turned up today. Find Vixis, make sure he's alright. He'll sort you out." "
Step 4[edit]
Search for Vixis, the Piker Splicer, somewhere outside the Cantina.
- Vixis, Piker Splicer found
Riliks let us know that one of his top splicers was heading up the keycard venture. You've agreed to help, as part of cover to investigate Imperium tests that may be taking place in the Lawless Frontier.
Tharsis is a flurry of illicit activity, and Vixis was recently the victim of possible cross-syndicate conflict, or Imperium intervention.
Riliks has asked that we go look for him outside.
" "Dangerous to walk alone with the Totality Divison around." Vixis displays empty hands with a scowl—he's been attacked." "
" "Took keycard cache. Cracked rebreather. Will do as Riliks asks, but revenge makes work sweater, yes?" "
" "One cache's tracker still on Mars, likely with Totality. One on Venus now, likely sold for contraband." "
" "Get them back, and Vixis is your helpful friend. To show pre-emptive appreciation: Falcon is yours. Speak with mechanic." "
" "Advise caution on your surveys. Imperium preparing strange weapon in the field…" "
Step 5[edit]
Visit the Piker Mechanic in the Cantina.
- Piker Mechanic visited
Vixis has suggested that we pay a visit to the Mechanic, as they may have something for us to help recover the keycards.
Deoriks flags you down with a wave of a datapad.
"You're the Guardian Vixis has been talking to? Well, I guess if you're helping him out, you're alright for a Lightbearer," she says.
"You ever ride a Pike? A Falcon's like that, but more. I can list every component we use in 'em and where we get 'em, but I don't want to keep you when you've got Imperium goons to squash.
"Remember—if you're scared you're about to crash, you're not going fast enough.
Step 6[edit]
Aid the Syndicates by completing Jobs on Mars and Venus to recover the stolen keycard caches.
- Venus cache recovered
- Mars cache recovered
Vxis has provided us with the coordinates for the stolen keycards and has asked us to provide retaliatory support against his recent Imperium attackers. In addition to helping Vixis, it will make a statement for the Pikers to the Imperium and the other syndicates.
Transcript[edit]
- Drifter: VI didn't mince words. Someone will die if I don't follow what fate laid out for me. I gotta assume it's you. Can't lose you again.
- Eris Morn: You lose me either way. Drifter, there is no future where I stand by a Dredgen's side. I am your partner, not an obedient pet. Instead… what if I take the Nine into own hands? Seize them as I did the Hive. Evert their machinations. I will glean what I can so we may divert our prophesized extinction. I have foiled gods before. The Nine are no different.
- Drifter: I'll see what I can dig up on the inside. But what if they figure me out and cut me down?
- Eris Morn: Then the God of Vengeance will bleed a planet.
- Note
- This dialogue triggers after completing the mission on either Mars or Venus.
- Eris Morn: Communion Attempt Number 34. I begin. I hold the ritual space. Tithe my offering to the celestial bodies of Sol. Formless bodies, take refuge in my limbs. Poetry bled from the ache of dark matter, grant speech with my offering. Grant SPEECH with my OFFERING. … You may speak now! I offer physicality. I offer warmth, I offer taste. I offer Glimmer. I offer tithes. I mastered the Hive. I am not supplicating myself to a stranger in order to communicate. I do not need an Emissary. Why do you refuse me? Communion Attempt Number 35. [sighs] I begin.
Venus Cache[edit]
- Drifter: Now that Blue's tinkered up, she's going whole hog on that Imperium data. Encryption's a pile though. It's gonna take time, dig?
- Eris: We will reveal the conspiracy surrounding the Imperium and the Nine. This "Bael"… did you know him?
- Drifter: Not personally. But the Dredgens… that's my baggage. I'll clean it up. First, we gotta make good on our deal with the Pikers.
{Mission begins}
- Stolen NLS Crusier Cargo Bay, Selina Morass
- Drifter: Ops ain't been cleared on Venus since it popped back into Sol. Legal ones, anyway. Guess they still aren't.
- Eris: The Vanguard may admonish us, but they understand the necessity of our actions. They won’t interfere. Do you trust these Pikers?
- Drifter: Hell no. But if it gets us what we need to move one step ahead of the Imperium, of the Nine… I'll roll those dice.
- The Guardian selects their Renegade Abilities and boards the Hawk, which flies to the surface.
- Selina Morass
- Eris Morn: Your Vex target shouldn't be far. The Tharsis Reformation are of the Conductor's cohort, no?
- Drifter: Yeah. Dropped out of her control. Traded in that cozy collective for slick threads. Their boss owes me… in cards, among other things.
- The Guardian locates their target: a Tharsis Reformation Overseer. After damaging it enough, it transmats away.
- Eris: Guardian. Your quarry flees. Pursue it.
- Drifter: Back on target, hero. Let's push; we don't have time to waste.
- The Guardian draws out and takes out Intel Officers until they have enough to track their bounty target.
- Eris: Don't let this obsession drive you into a trap. What the Nine say is not absolute. You needn't worry.
- Drifter: Maybe this is what the Prophecy meant by "bind the Nine"? Gods don't tend to like being tied down. Maybe III's expecting us to slug it out with the Imperium to prevent extinction.
- Eris: What the Nine present to us is only the surface. There is a deeper truth to uncover. Give me time. Patience.
- The Guardian clears the area of Vex.
- Drifter: They're just in our way. The real fight's with the Imperium.
- Eris: Something for us to look forward to.
- The Guardian finds and eliminates the Tharsis Reformation Overseer.
- Drifter: Hey, Spider. Our Weapon's ready for a planet-side pickup. Send out that Hawk! Whoa. You pick that up on the Vanguard sats? Some kinda… high-yield energy emission.
- Eris: Something near Mars, but away from orbit. This signature is of the Nine.
- The Guardian requests exfiltration and escapes Venus in the Hawk.
- Stolen NLS Crusier Cargo Bay, Selina Morass
- Drifter: Listen. If it comes down to it, I stole the Imperium's data. It's me Bael wants. If we got our backs to a wall, just let me play my hand.
- Eris: You will not have your back to a wall… because it will be to mine and the Guardian's.
- Drifter: You don’t know what the Nine can take from us, Eris. I've felt it, and I've seen it. They'll rip the years away until we got nothing.
- Eris: Whatever they reach out to take, we will hold fast together. Trust.
{Mission ends}
Mars Cache[edit]
- Aunor: We're assisting the Piker syndicate for help in turn. Drifter was right—the Imperium might be experimenting with anti-Light tech. So we'll do some demolition on a spot the syndicates claim was a test site for Imperium weapons and see what turns up.
- Zavala: Working with the crime syndicates? Don't tell me you've gone renegade.
- Aunor: We don't have official support, sir. I thought you'd be too busy with your hands tied to call directly. Pleasant surprise.
{Mission begins}
- Stolen NLS Crusier Cargo Bay, Freehold Outskirts
- The Guardian selects their Renegade Abilities and boards a Hawk, which takes them to the surface.
- Aunor: Commander… how's the City holding up?
- Zavala: We're at the mercy of micro-phenomena happening across the world. Matter transmutating, air turning to toxin… We're running containment. I suspect it'll continue until the Emissary and Eris Morn can tell us what "bind the Nine" truly means.
- The Guardian disrupts the Imperium assets.
- Aunor: Commander, while we have you on the line—I've been meaning to ask. Is redacting the Prophecy truly necessary? The people of the City are in danger; they can feel it. If it were me, I'd appreciate the intel.
- Zavala: Spoken like a field Guardian. I hear your concern, Mahal. It's too dangerous to tell them. And the people are already on the verge of panic.
- The Guardian clears the scrapyard of Imperium troops.
- Aunor: Take out that syndicate asset while I scan the area. I'm filtering for dark matter particles. The word on the Martian frontier is: the Imperium is obsessed with collecting dark matter ingots and crystals.
- Zavala: The system has been rich with dark matter since the flurry of Nine activity on Kepler…
- Aunor: My thoughts exactly. It's gotta be what's powering this new tech.
- The Guardian uses Imperium orbital strikes to destroy nine Interceptors that were being protected by a shield.
- Aunor: Fight your way to the exfiltration point I marked. It's inside a heavy concentration of dark matter energy.
- Zavala: Being back with a fireteam reminds me of my strike support days. Especially on Mars. The universe seemed simpler… though survival has remained a temporary condition.
- Aunor: It's not like you to sound nostalgic, sir.
- The Guardian heads to the extraction point.
- Aunor: Your ride's heading out to you. We'll get you out.
- Zavala: I guess I'm feeling nostalgic. Whether I wanted it or not. And I rarely have a spare moment… Those early strikes on the Martian frontier… were a highlight of my career, Guardian. Just wanted you to know. Relax. You're not being disciplined. You’ve made it… interesting to be your Commander.
- The Guardian successfully exfiltrates aboard a Hawk.
- Stolen NLS Crusier Cargo Bay, Freehold Outskirts
- Aunor: The Guardian found an expired Ghost out here. No physical damage, but… the Light is completely absent from the Ghost shell… Commander—
- Zavala: Too convenient not to be a weapon. Track down what the Imperium is doing. Put a stop to their operation.
- Aunor: Commander. We know you have a lot to handle back home. Are you all right?
- Zavala: Indeed. Just… checking in on friends while I can.
{Mission ends}
Step 7[edit]
Speak with Vixis
- Vixis visited
Now that we've recovered the keycards, we should return to Vixis to help the Pikers get their venture in operation and fulfill your part in the exchange. With the Piker's support, it may be possible to start making bigger moves against the Imperium and their Nightfall plans.
" "Boss has been informed—spliced keycards are ready." "
" "And Vxis enjoys Rao's discomfort." The Splicer laughs. "An eye for an eye is justice, yes?" "
" "Boss says you earned a meeting—would like to trade you for services of a Splicer Shank." "
" "Vixis's thanks to you, friend." "
Step 8[edit]
Return to Spider in the Cantina.
- Spider visited
- Renegade Ability upgraded
Vixis appreciates your help with the keycard caches and has provided you with a small bonus in Credits, the dominant currency in Tharsis.
Head to Spider in the Cantina to report your success. He may have some ideas on how to spend your newfound wealth.
Spider leans forward eagerly as you approach. "Tharsis has been overrun by delinquency," he roars, huffing the air. "Feels more like home than Variisis Core ever did. Hold on to your Glimmer; it's not the anchor coinage of Mars. You'll need Credits to entice the Tharsis Syndicates and craft specialists. And I'd be happy to part you from your Credits, in exchange for frontier tech, purchased directly from yours truly. Go on. You deserve a shopping spree now that you're free from your Vanguard bonds. When you're done, your old pal Drifter has news from the Pikers."
Step 9[edit]
Speak with Drifter in the Cantina.
- Drifter visited
You've established yourself as an emerging player in the Tharsis illicit network, and Drifter has news about a potential exchange with the Piker syndicate he's set up. Speak to him in Tharsis Cantina.
We've established a tenuous business relationship with the Pikers, and Drifter has helped set up an exchange with them: They'll bring a Splicer Shank to help us extract further data from Imperium installations on the whereabouts, defenses, and operational status of Nightfall.
- Drifter: Hey hero. Heard you been getting into it with the syndicates. You're the talk of Tharsis. I need your ear for a sec. Away from Blue. That data disk we lifted? I got a line on a way to break it open. You know the Pikers: Eliksni punks who don't care for Houses or the Traveler. Treat Servitors on the same level as Dregs. They're atheists, radicals—wild children. These kids been scrapping with the Imperium for a minute now. Got Splicer Shanks that can crack the disk we stole—unlike our Ghosts. Spider and Riliks—the Piker's leader—got an exchange set up. Down in the dunes, on Spider's fancy new boat. He's been hounding me to send you his way. Go meet 'em. Get a Shank. Keep Spider happy. He talks syndicate, the syndicates got numbers, and we need numbers to stop the Imperium. They know we got the plans for their Nightfall station on that disk. It's over silver bullet—we get in, we'll know how to take their superweapon off the table. Wish I could go with you but… I gotta chase down some loose ends elsewhere. Do me a favour—take Blue with you? Tell her… Well, don't tell her anything. You saw what they want me to do. What they said I'm gonna do—or did already. She'll sniff me out and she'll say I'm runnin', but I ain't! I ain't leavin' her, I just—she needs to stay here, to do this job. Don't let her come after me. And if she tries—you keep her away.
Step 10[edit]
Complete mission "Fearsome Retainer."
- Mission completed
Spider has worked with his contacts in the Pikers to obtain a Shank, specially outfitted to breach Imperium security and provide the access we need.
- Note
- See Fearsome Retainer for full transcript.
Step 11[edit]
Find Drifter before he leaves orbit.
- Jump ship reached
Drifter has taken the Derelict and gone out on his own. Head to your jump ship and pursue him.
- Blue: Drifter's ditching us, champ! The Splicer Shank's safe, and that Imperium disk is as good as decrypted, but Drifter's taken the Derelict into orbit. He's after the Nine and Bael. Following his vision. That lintlicker won't hear me out, but he always listens to you. Go after him, will you?
- The Guardian boards their Jumpship to purse the Drifter.
{Cutscene begins}
- The Drifter is piloting the Derelict.
- Blue: Hey! Have you lost your mind?
- Drifter: We both know I've done worse, Blue. Sorry, fireteam. I need Bael to trust me. He's just a kid. And a Guardian… is a terrible thing to waste.
- Suddenly, the Drifter spots something. From a viewing platform aboard the Zagan Gloriosus, Premier Lume points to the Martian surface. Outside, six Imperium Warships and the Zagan Gloriosus combine red energy to create a gigantic beam of red energy.
- Drifter: No!
- The red beam strikes Mars. On the ground, at Tharsis Outpost, Eido looks up at the sky to see the beam approaching. It hits the ground and unleashes a wave of energy through the area and over Eido and the Guardians and Ghosts in the area. After it passes, Eido watches in horror as cracks form on the Guardians around her. The Light peels away from them and the Ghosts before falling dead to the ground. Sometime later, Edio is dragging a Guardian's body to lay to rest alongside others when she hears Dredgen Bael.
- Bael: Agents of the Last City. Welcome back to Mars.
- Eido scrambles to the ground and plays dead. Bael arrives with a large floating black tray.
- Bael: We've ended the lives of dozens of Guardians and Ghosts on Tharsis.
- Bael picks up a dead Ghost of the ground and looks at it.
- Bael: Nightfall has nullified their Light. And only hollow shells remain.
- Bael places the dead Ghost in the tray, alongside several other dead Ghosts, and continues slowly walking.
- Bael: The 13th Understanding in the 7th Book of Sorrow… states that to rend one's enemies is to see them not as equals, but objects… hollow of spirit and meaning. Nightfall does it gladly. But we won’t stop with Tharsis. No.
- Shots of Ikora in the Last City looking to the sky, Aunor aboard her jumpship and a distraught Drifter aboard the Derelict are briefly shown.
- Bael: Nightfall is coming for the Last City. The time of Guardians as shepherds of humanity is over. You were supposed to protect the people,
- Bael picks up another dead Ghost laying on a crate, then instantly dropping it without a care.
- Bael: not rule them. The Vanguard must evacuate the City… or be eradicated when Nightfall fills your sky.
{Cutscene ends}
- Blue: Telemetry confirms Drifter fired off his NLS drive. He's long gone. That warship that fired on Tharsis has left orbit. Imperium Commandnet just lit up with chatter that a weapons test has concluded… THAT… was Nightfall. Sorry, hoss. Eido was at ground zero in the blast. She—she's OK, but… You'd better come on back.
Step 12[edit]
Speak with the crew in the Tharsis Outpost.
- Cantina reached
Drifter wouldn't leave without a good reason. He isn't the man he used to be. Meet up with the rest of the crew to discuss next steps.
- The Guardian finds Aunor, Blue and Eido around a table, the latter with a drink in her upper hands.
- Eido: I didn't understand what was happening at first. All those Guardians and Ghosts…
- Aunor: Dozens of casualties. Everyone of them irreplaceable.
- Eido rests against the table.
- Aunor: And Drifter has disappeared without a trace.
- Blue: That lowlife always cuts and runs. We can't rely on him.
- Eido: It was all so normal, but then… that horrible light…
- Aunor places a hand on Eido's upper left forearm to comfort her.
- Eido: How many Guardians would those Ghosts have found? How many people would they have saved? Bael was right there, and all I could do was hide.
- Aunor: For now, we should focus on stopping Bael. The City is his next target. The Vanguard will be focused on preparing for an extinction-level event. In the meantime, we have leads to follow. Guardian, we need you ready.
- Aunor and Eido transmat away.
- Blue: Drifter's running to Bael. Thinks his vision is saying Eris will die if he doesn't. As if we can't change that. I'm through trying to stop his foolishness. He can chase the Nine without me.
- Blue transmats away.
Step 13[edit]
Listen to the recording.
- Recording heard
Drifter has left you another recording.
- Note
- See Tape#Drifter's third message to the Guardian for full transcript.
Step 14[edit]
Search for survivors of the attack on Tharsis.
- Survivors found X/3
The Eclipse Energy attack on Tharsis only seems to have affected Ghosts and their Lightbearers., even those still unpaired. Those without the Light were left unscathed. Seek out and help any survivors you can find and search the site for clues about the attack.
" This Ghost—not yet paired to a Lightbearer—has been physiologically damaged, but its shell's operational beacons have dimmed. "
" Dredgen Bael's orbital weapon has shorn this Guardian's paracausal soul apart. You sense no Light within this body. "
" This was Berlioz, a Ghost you met when they first landed on Tharsis. His Ghost shell cracked when it impacted the ground. It shows no signs of life. "
Step 15[edit]
Bring the Ghost to Zavala's office in the Tower.
- Ghost placed
Zavala needs to know about the threat unleashed on Tharsis. The Vanguard can't ignore the Imperium any longer. Bring Beriloz's Ghost shell to be interred in the Tower and show him firsthand what has occurred.
Step 16[edit]
Speak with Zavala.
- Zavala visited
Zavala is willing to discuss the attack on Tharsis.
" Zavala's eyes narrow at the dead Ghost you've laid on his desk, his shoulders slumped. "
" " Aunor showed me feeds of ground zero on Tharsis. So many Lights lost…" "
" "I don't want you chasing the Barant Imperium because I thought Earth was more important." "
" "And I still think I'm right. The City is in unrest. I can't spare anyone else to assist you." "
" "But someone has to stop them. It has to be you. I know the Drifter has left you to pursue his vision." "
" "We'll defend Earth's orbit from the Imperium. They won't get a ship above us." "
" "Find Drfiter. Find wherever they're building Nightfall Station. Destroy it." "
Step 17[edit]
Speak with Eris and Lodi vis your Ghost on the Derelict.
- Message heard
Lodi and Eris would like to speak with you on the Derelict vis Ghost link.
- Ghost: Guardian, you've got an incoming call.
- Eris: Guardian. I bring unsettling news. The Dredgen's weapon could only have come from beyond our dimensionality. To uncover truth, I contacted the Emissary of the Nine.
- Lodi: Right on time. Hey there, Guardian… Ms. Morn. Did you start?
- Eris: Yes. I required audience with the Nine, and the Emissary agreed to assist the investigation. Guardian, you must know what we have gleaned.
{Cutscene begins}
- Statues of Eris and Lodi kneel in a circle surrounded by lit candles and Hive knives aboard the Derelict. Eris reaches out to lodi, who has his head bent back.
- Lodi: I suspected we needed VI. The last emissary to channel them was Xûr,
- Lodi's image begins to flash to Xûr and a combination of the two. The two reach back to Eris, then clutch their heads.
- Lodi: and… well, it left him… changed.
- Eris: The emissary and I opened the connection.
- Eris breathes out Hive symbols. She holds Lodi's head, whose right eye is glowing bright blue, as the symbols which flows into Lodi's open mouth.
- Eris: I invoke you, VI… to answer for your transgression!
- Lodi: The Outer Nine are difficult to translate. They aren’t like the Nine we can have a conversation with.
- The floor under Eris and Lodi begin to crack with blue dark matter energy.
- Lodi: VI is… alien.
- A close up of Lodi's glowing blue eye.
- Lodi as VI: ABJECT DISINTEREST
- INVOCATIONS ABSENT OF PURPOSE
- Saturn pulses with Eclipse energy.
- Eris: I inquired his involvement with Dredgen Bael.
- Lodi as VI: AUDIENCE IS NOT DEVOID OF CHARGE
- Lodi: I could feel myself losing hold on reality. VI… pushed me down.
- Eris: Enough! Tell us of your intentions with Dredgen Bael!
- The image of Saturn changes to one of a Nine-structure of a spire surrounded by three floating platforms.
- Lodi as VI: I HAVE A MESSAGE FOR THE WEAPON
- Eris: You, Guardian.
- Lodi as VI: A WEAPON IS REQUISITE IN THE DISTANT FUTURE
- The tip of the spire transforms into a long hexagonal tunnel with a spiral of platforms.
- Dredgen Bael stands on a platform surrounded by Saturn's rings and chains with Ghost cores.
- Lodi as VI: A WEAPON WAS CHOSEN
- NOT BY ALL NOT BY ME
- The camera spins around Bael to show him looking upon the core of Nightfall Station.
- Lodi as VI: THE OUTER LOOSE A MORE COMPLIANT TOOL
- A WEAPON THE OUTER COMMAND
- YOUR DREDGEN
- ITS KNEES BENT AND RINGS KISSED
- The camera zooms out from the top of Nightfall's core to show it within the station through its firing tunnel.
- Lodi as VI: WE GIFTED BAEL THE STATION CORE
- WITH III'S DEATH
- PROJECTION NEGATED
- PROPHECY IS CERTAINTY
- OUR LIBERATION DEMANDS CAUSATION
- A statue of Bael holding the Traveler encircled by a metal ring, similar to the Ghost cores on him, with chains of those same cores surrounded passes over Nightfall Station.
- Lodi as VI: VOLITION DOES NOT EXIST
- YOU WILL SMEAR BAEL INTO UNRECOGNIZABLE MEAT
- FOR CONTINUED ALIGNMENT THE OUTER THANK YOU WEAPON
- Saturn lets out a pulse of Eclipse energy.
- Lodi: We tried to hold them in place.
- Eris: But his strength was too great.
- Lodi closes his eye as cracks with blue energy begin to recede into it. Eris holds Lodi as the cracks under them also recede.
- Eris: VI departed but left us with what you must know: The Outer Nine have crafted your shadow.
{Cutscene ends}
Step 18[edit]
Speak with Drifter through your Ghost at Tharsis Outpost.
- Incomplete
Drifter has reached out with an explanation for his actions. This better be good…
- Drifter: Hey, hero. I can still fix this. No one else has to die.
- Aunor: Bael does.
- Drifter: Aunor. Why isn't Blue answering my calls? She won't talk to me.
- Aunor: You know what I told the Vanguard the moment you sauntered into town?
- Drifter: Get off my line.
- Aunor: I told them your ideas were dangerous! That you were going to take us back to the Dark Age. Now, Bael, following in your footsteps, has butchered whole fireteams of Guardians and Ghosts.
- Drifter: I was put here to deal with him. It has to be me!
- Aunor: You don't reason with a Light like that. You bury him and you take the Ghost apart!
- Drifter: What else am I supposed to do! I did everything they told me—everything! That Nine in Bael's head told me either I lead the Imperium or Eris dies. How is that a choice?!
- Aunor: Unprincipled coward. That "vision" is playing you right into their hands.
- Drifter: You won't tell me. Blue won't talk to me. What am I supposed to do?!
- Aunor: You really don't know. You are the most authority resistant, rule-breaking swindler in the City. What does that man do to a god?
- Drifter: Con 'em.
Step 19[edit]
Speak with Blue in the Cantina.
- Blue visited
Blue has an update for us about the Imperium data. We should go visit her in the Cantina.
- Blue: That Splicer Shank has worse grammar than Vex milk. But, pff, sure knows its way around Imperium encryption. OK. Let's see. Ooh, son of a—Nightfall Station doesn't just have a Light-killing payload. Theoretically, it nullifies the Darkness as well. That warship fired a prototype, but… This finished version has remote attack capabilities. This thing could target home from anywhere. According to this data, it's not finished—yet. And no idea where they're building it. As for Drifter—I'm done with that guy. You all can field his calls.
Step 20[edit]
Speak to Aunor in the Cantina.
- Aunor visited
Aunor wishes to speak with us about next steps. We can find her in the Cantina.
" "Drifter's getting set up for a con behind Imperium lines—Traveler protect us." "
" "But I don't see a better lead, with that Nightfall weapon operational, the full Station out there somewhere." "
" "Drifter left us a contact within the Tharsis Reformation." "
" "His contact claims to have a way to help us locate an Imperium shuttle. Let's find them." "
Step 21[edit]
Ante up with Zephyrus in the Cantina.
- Zephyrus visited
Zephyrus has a plan for how we might be able to find the location of a shuttle. We should see what they have to say.
" "Drifter tells me you are in need. I would exploit your need, but he helped us escape the Conductor." "
" " For that, I will assist you. You require an Imperium shuttle. I will leverage deceit; ensure you obtain it." "
" "I will distract Imperium agents in a game of chaos. You will plant trackers in their territory during the game." "
" "The trackers will analyze their supply lines, locate a shuttle. Hang those banners to advertise the game—as entraptment." "
Step 22[edit]
Place banners for the Vex Card Game throughout the Tharsis Cantina.
- First Banner placed X/3
Placing banners for the Vex Card Game throughout the Tharsis Bazaar will build camaraderie with Zephyrus's crew.
Step 23[edit]
Speak with Zephyrus in the Cantina.
- Zephyrus visited
Now that you've done Zephyrus a favor, he owes you one.
" "Those banners you erected contain visual sensors. They will turn our game of chance into authoritative victory." "
" "The trackers you plant will help ascertain the location of an Imperium shuttle." "
" "My Collective has been in protracted conflict with the Totality. Their fashion is exquisite, but they covet our land." "
" "To prepare you for this assignment, our Reformancer shall arm you with our latest defensive raiment." "
" "A statement to the Syndicates that you service us." "
Step 24[edit]
Visit the Reformation Reformancer in the Cantina.
- Reformation Reformancer visited
Zephyrus has suggested that we visit the Reformation quartermaster to obtain a method of tracking Imperium vessels.
Dealing with these strange Vex will aid in the fight against the Imperium with tech and intel.
The Reformancer greets you with a dramatic flourish of it garments. This unit, designated Guzheng, currently serves as Reformancer. This title is unique and a pleasing degree of outré, just like Guzheng itself."
"You are extremely puncturable, Guardian unit. Flammable too, in our experience. Might I suggest this defensive tool? Our organization is willing to part with it as a token of equivalent exchange."
Guzheng focuses on your Exotic armor for a moment too long as you take the Deflector unit. Then its gaze snaps back to yours. "May this improve your odds."
Step 25[edit]
Plant the trackers in the Imperium cargo on Europa.
- Trackers planted
There is a window of opportunity to plant the trackers provided by the Tharsis Reformation at an Imperium cargo site on Europa. Whichever shuttle picks up that cargo from Europa is our target to commandeer.
Transcript[edit]
- Eris: Emissary, Commander Zavala has instructed me to seek your counsel. What connection is there between the Nine and the worm gods?
- Lodi: Great question! I have roughly 25 questions about worms—
- Eris: I do not believe we are dealing with a direct connection to the Hive. Inquire with your employers as to the nature of the connection.
- Lodi: They're planets, ma'am. If they don't wanna talk—they won't.
- Eris: Then what use is an Emissary?
- Lodi: The use is in what comes next. I'll talk to VI's neighbors—ask if they know any connection between the Hive and Saturn.
- Eris: I can think of roughly 25.
- Zavala: Guardian. I wish I was sending you to take Dredgen Bael apart piece by piece instead of locating an Imperium shuttle. He should feel every moment of pain he's caused. But our next steps cannot be taken recklessly. I'm legitimizing this operation so the Vanguard can engage, but I've learned the hard way the cost of overreaction. Find his channel. I want to speak to him personally.
{Mission begins}
- Stolen NLS Crusier Cargo Bay, Forging Matrix
- After selecting their Renegade Abilities, the Guardian boards a Hawk and heads down to the surface.
- Forging Matrix
- Bael: At last. Commander. You know all New Lights, do you not? Of the ones I slaughtered, who were you closest to?
- Zavala: There is nothing human of you left. Cease operations, or the Vanguard will annihilate the Imperium.
- Bael: No.
- The Guardian clears the area of Totality Division troops.
- Bael: Weapon… you know what it means to be chosen. You understand. Maybe you don't. Being a vessel means being in constant… pain. The pain is proof I am needed. I'm proud of the fate that was chosen for me, but the cost… Weapon? What's been taken from you? You can't remember, can you? The Light erases the good with the bad. You'll never know. The Nine take from me; the Traveler took from you. At least my partnership with VI is temporary. Perhaps yours is, too.
- The Guardian retrieves valuable cargo taken by the Totality Division.
- Zavala: Guardian, that cargo has the shuttle logs you came for. Keep it safe—
- Bael: Enough of the old man whispering in your ear. It's just us. Tell me what it's like to kill a god. To feel the life force of an all-powerful being drain by your own hand. You've done it so many times. Does it lose its luster after a while? Or does it transmute? Shift, from one all-powerful being to another?
- The Guardian arrives at the Harvester and begins smuggling the cargo.
- Bael: What you saw at Tharsis was a demonstration of Eclipse Energy. It negates paracausal power completely. A perfect, targeted, bloodless kill. And each Lightbearer’s death is an offering to something greater than myself.
- Zavala: You speak of tithes. Who do you tithe to?
- Bael: I am the hand which pens the Book of the Alchemist. I tithe to VI of the Nine, and he rewards me with strength. This is what VI learned from the king's Echo drifting among his rings: With enough strength, VI can carve a doorway and be liberated at last.
- The Guardian delivers and stashes all of the cargo.
- Zavala: Bael is practicing sword logic in service to one of the Outer Orbits. This complicates our mission to bind the Nine. I need to speak to Ikora and the Emissary. Good work here, Guardian. Our situation is dire, but this information gets us closer to stopping Bael.
- The Guardian loads the cargo onto the Hawk and exfiltrates back to the cargo bay.
- Stolen NLS Crusier Cargo Bay, Forging Matrix
- Bael: Lightless Zavala. The people of the Last City are governed by immortals we did not elect and who do not step down. You may paint yourselves as saviors, but the truth of your autocracy is shame. After all, the Nightfall weapon will not hurt you. Not anymore. You have given everything. What's left for you to prove?
- Zavala: Only justice for the Guardians and Ghosts you have slain.
{Mission ends}
Step 26[edit]
Speak with Zephyrus in the Cantina.
- Zephyrus visited
Zephyrus will have up-to-date tracking information. Return to Tharsis Outpost to meet with them.
" "The trackers have profited us. The Drifter is certain the shuttle you seek is on Europa." "
" "I have informed your Praxic enforcement entity. Return in a functional state so that we might profit again." "
Step 27[edit]
Speak with Aunor.
- Aunor visited
Aunor is waiting to brief us about a jump on Europa to steal an Imperium shuttle.
- Aunor: I… just gave the worst advice of my life. Told Drifter to do what he does best—con Bael, the Nine, and the Imperium. I hope the City doesn't end up paying for it. The Drifter just sent us intel on a hidden Imperium base on Europa, made to look decommissioned. But it's directly connected to their supply line.
- Drifter: Hey, I'm here. Have to get back undercover soon, but I'm stayin' so I can figure out what VI is doin' with Bael, and how to undermine Nightfall when you get here.
- Aunor: You look ready for some action. Good. That makes one of us. The plan is to hit-and-fade, assault the firebase and steal a shuttle in the chaos. Drifter insists we'll need it. Assuming I haven't doomed us by advising Drifter to destroy the Imperium by being himself… unleashing a Drifter racket on terrorists with a Light-eating superweapon… good hunting Guardian.
There's an empty glass on the bar behind Aunor. She pushes it away as you approach, but her hands are steady.
"Guardian. As much as I'd love to find that bastard and wring his neck… we can't." She spits the words like a curse. "Not while Nightfall's still in the sky. Taking that weapon down has to be our top priority. So, let's get started."
Step 28[edit]
Complete mission "Out in the Cold."
- Mission completed
You have developed your relationships with the Syndicates enough to leverage their extensive illicit networks in search of any ways to strike back at the Imperium, and bring down Nightfall Station.
- Note
- See Out in the Cold for full transcript.
Step 29[edit]
Speak to Aunor in the Cantina.
- Aunor visited
Aunor has acquired intel from the Syndicates on how we can pass through Imperium orbital security to strike at their base on Venus.
" "I have the Imperium shuttle safe in the Tharsis hanger, under a stealth skin." "
" "We just need a callsign to get us into the Imperium's supply line." "
" "There's a local Imperium unit, the Totality Division. Part law enforcement, part syndicate." "
" "Find Enforcer Rao, she's a Psion morph. In this for herself. Might be able to help." "
Step 30[edit]
Speak with Rao in the Cantina.
- Rao visited
Aunor suggested we meet up the Totality Division boss, Rao, for a line on the Imperium callsign.
" A voice fills your head, cutting out the dull roar of the Totality Divison precinct around you: "
" 'The Mind of Rao to yours. I'd like to help you, Guardian. Bael and Lume are none the wiser. They are fools.' "
" 'No greater fool than me, perhaps. I should never have left our Empress, Guardian.' "
" 'I mistook her patience for weakness. This new Imperium is another Barant attempt to reach Torobatl.' "
" 'I was ready for a shootout in Tharsis when I saw your Praxic bearing down.' "
" 'But any trouble your crew makes for the Imperium means less time for Lume to breathe down our necks.' "
" 'The Praxic told me you're looking for a hidden path to Venus. You're after Nightfall.' "
" 'I'll help you. I've done business with those Ghosts caught in the blast. They didn't deserve… I value their business.' "
" 'I've sent you coordinates: A Fallen crew have stolen an Imp callsign, using it to smuggle. They'll have a transmitter fob.' "
Step 31[edit]
Acquire the Cabal smuggling callsign from the Pikers on Venus.
- Smuggler callsign acquired X/1
Enforcer Rao delivered the location data of Pikers on Venus in possession of an Imperium callsign. They've been using it for smuggling all manner of small tech stock. It's time to pay them a visit.
Transcript[edit]
- Lodi: What Bael said about being adrift, uh… I've felt that too. More and more. Look, I've been Seeing… something. It's not the future, and it's not the past. It's like I'm… sideways. Looking out of someone else's eyes. I'm somewhere underground, and I can tell my body is wrong. I wanna claw my way out of it. I'm supposed to be somewhere else. I don't know what this thing is, Guardian, but they're trying to talk to me. I can’t understand them. The other Nine don't know. Uh, I don't want them to find out. I don't think they can. How do you keep a secret from a god? [laughs] I'll have to be careful.
- Lodi: Guardian… The Nightfall attack… I felt it… from Earth. It's like the fourth dimension reached out, grabbed the gas knob, and turned it off. The Inners were furious…
- Drifter: You were hearing Guardians and Ghosts get snuffed out across Tharsis.
- Lodi: I'm sorry… I hear you're off to steal some sort of access codes from Eliksni smugglers. Any way I could help?
- Drifter: I need to know the Nightfall station's weakness. VI really messed Bael up good… he'll crack if you push him.
{Mission begins}
- Stolen NLS Crusier Cargo Bay, Selina Morass
- After selecting their Renegade Abilities, the Guardian boards a Hawk and flies down to the surface.
- Selina Morass
- Drifter: Hey Dredgen, I hooked an Emissary on the line. All three of us Nine-touched, but they've got a special hold on Lodi. He's one of us.
- Lodi: Hello, you can call me Lodi if you want. Look, you have no reason to trust me, but I had to reach out. I've been in your shoes. And so has Dredgen Hope. What the Nine put us through can be… frightening. Isolating.
- The Guardian tracks down the bounty target; a Piker Crime Boss.
- Bael: I don't have anything to say to a servant of the Inner Orbits.
- Lodi: How about an Emissary for all of them? I appreciate VI. Of all the Nine, he's the most curious.
- Bael: A vessel for so many. How are you still alive?
- Lodi: Y'know, uh, sometimes I'm not sure I am alive anymore. I don't always feel Human.
- The Guardian damages the Piker Crime Boss and forces them to teleport away.
- Bael: I feel the same. I feel like…
- Lodi: Like you've lost part of yourself.
- The Guardian gathers intel on their bounty.
- Bael: I've lost too much of myself. So many pieces… my liver, the flesh of my face—what I've lost he replaces with metal.
- Lodi: What element?
- Bael: How do I focus on that through the pain? Right now, I'm on Venus two weeks ago and… here, now. At the Station.
- Lodi: I lose myself across time. The Station makes sense, but what's on Venus?
- Bael: The important places get stuck. I keep coming back… here. They're connected.
- The Guardian clears the area of Piker forces.
- Lodi: The important places do get stuck, don't they? I find that useful to ground myself if I'm adrift too long. What's it like in the other now, two weeks ago?
- Bael: It isn't important to me. I keep getting me mixed up with VI. Everything's blurred. They… took me to Venus to flip a switch, to turn on a shield generator. Is channeling the Nine painful for you?
- The Guardian takes out the Piker Crime Boss and heads to the exfiltration site.
- Lodi: Depends on who it is. With II, I tap into all the juicy secrets of Sol. With IX I feel powerful, prized. But I don't feel pain.
- Bael: I don’t understand.
- Lodi: I'm not hurt when the Nine possess me because I'm the Emissary. I'm still whole. Bael, you aren't an Emissary; you weren't made to be a vessel.
- Bael: No! VI chose me. I'm the Weapon. What do you mean you don't… that impossible, what do you mean you're fine?
- Lodi: I haven't lost what you've lost. There wasn't supposed to be a second Weapon. VI is using you, Bael. I'm sorry.
- Bael: You can't be sorry. I don't understand what you're saying! What do you mean, you're fine?!
- The Guardian successfully exfiltrates aboard a Hawk and returns to the cargo bay.
- Lodi: I cut the call. The kid's a monster, but he's still Human. He'll turn to you for support now, Drifter. Ask open-ended questions, target his connection with VI and he'll remain distracted.
- Drifter: That was a master class. Never do that crap to me, kid. Hero, get those clearance codes you nabbed back here.
- Lodi: Wouldn't dream of it. Oh, and whatever powers the shield for the Station is on Venus. I'll tell II.
{Mission ends}
Step 32[edit]
Speak with Aunor in the Cantina.
- Aunor visited
Aunor is furious but has to set her frustration aside to keep her mind on the mission. She has chosen to put her faith in you and offers a tool of the Praxic Order. She believes you are ready.
- Aunor: I am a sword of the Praxic Order. I was trained to believe we only needed Light. That to touch Darkness was… to fall to evil. You wield the Darkness as easily as the Light, in a form sanctioned by the heart of the Traveler itself. It hasn't corrupted you. I've been watching. You're a living counter to Order dogma. We—they—are stuck in the old ways. Too busy chasing old threats to spot the new. Who knows how many more Baels are out there, getting ready to threaten the City? The Praxic Order needs a new path. Maybe… maybe we can find it together. It's a mentor's job to guide each Praxic trainee as they forge a weapon of their Light: a Blade burning with the Praxic Fire. I'll stand mentor to you, if you're willing. Forge a new Blade for yourself: a weapon equally of Light and Dark. Let's find out what the Praxics need to become. Will you walk the untrodden path with me, Guardian.
Aunor sets down her datapad. "We need to be ready for the upcoming battles. And if that means breaking a fundamental tradition of the Praxic Order… then that's just what I'll do."
She beckons you forward.
Step 33[edit]
Visit the Praxic Temple with Aunor.
- Mission completed
Aunor has informed us of a Praxic Vault on Europa, recently raided by the Imperium. She believes we will find a tool of the Praxic Order there. Something with which to face Bael.
- Note
- See Fire and Ice for full transcript.
Step 34[edit]
Speak with the Aunor in the Cantina.
- Aunor visited
With our Praxic Blade forged, and Aunor's trust in us solidified, we should return to Tharsis and press on the fight against the Imperium. Aunor has a plan to improve our odds on Venus.
" "My Order has a lot to answer for. As much as it pains me—thank you for uncovering this, Guardian." "
" "While I make a full report to Zavala and the Vanguard, Drifter has an ask for us: Imperium uniforms." "
" "He believes we'll need them on the Imperium's Venus base, to lower Nightfall's defenses." "
" "I've been tailing Rao. She's a City defector, and still carrying some guilt for it. Use that." "
Step 35[edit]
Speak with Rao in the Cantina.
- Rao visited
Aunor wants assurances that the job on Venus won't go south. She's conspired with the Totality Division to plant insurgents on Venus with Imperium uniforms. They just need the uniforms—we should reach out to Rao.
" 'Your Praxic mentioned you need my help. Let's not make a habit of this, my duties are to my people first.' "
" 'The Tharsis Reformation are a peculiar breed of Vex—they've got an addiction to gambling and fashion.' "
" 'It seemed their sentience led them to realize they had a desire for personal expression. And a preference not to be naked.' "
" 'As a result, certain vectors of the Reformation have acquired a taste for practical fashion. Imperium armor.' "
" 'Barant cuirasses come pre-built with weapon-proof weaves they can fashion into anything.' "
" 'They've been raiding our stores. Stop them, and I'll think the other way if a few more uniforms disappear.' "
" 'One last thing—stop by our Armorer before you head out on this job. You'll need something to punch through.' "
Step 36[edit]
Visit Armorer Aghol in the Tharsis Cantina.
- Imperium Armorer visited
Rao suggested we visit the Totality's Armorer. The Totality Division is willing to supply our cause with ordinance and insurgent soldiers.
"Aghol. Totality Armorer. And you're the Lightbearer who's raised such a ruckus around the place."
The Armorer eyes you up and down. "Well I don't mind a bit of ruckus myself. There are plenty of abandoned drop pods scattered across Sol's old battlefields. Easy enough to recover and repurpose as artillery."
"Even Guardians know, nothing outside the pod survives contact with the pod." Aghol laughs, and hands you a beacon.
Step 37[edit]
Recover the uniforms from the Reformation fashion thieves on mars.
- Stolen uniforms recovered
Rao has informed us of a Vex base on Mars where Reformation frames have absconded with stolen Imperium uniforms—apparently to repurpose as fashionable outerwear.
Transcript[edit]
- Eris: My time as a god was a satisfactory one. Tell me of the marks the Nine left on you.
- Lodi: Uh… there are perks. But I do miss my old eye… being able to blend in. What about your extra one? It do anything fun?
- Eris: I suppose it was "fun" in that it kept me alive. The Guardian stated in their report that you possess True Sight?
- Lodi: Sure do! [chuckles] What do you want to know? It's more accurate if it's something small.
- Eris: Does Drifter return in one piece?
- Lodi: Oh! Uh… he does. Anything else?
- Eris: I have a list.
- Lodi: Is this the secure mission channel? I'm—I'm uh, still figuring out the Vanguard systems. I guess… Mr. Drifter wanted us to talk?
- Eris: He has a way of facilitating connection through… mischief. Emissary. Speak, then.
- Lodi: Speak? Well, that's a "how-do-you-do."
- {Mission begins}
- Stolen NLS Crusier Cargo Bay, Hellas Fortitude
- After selecting their Renegade Abilities, the Guardian boards a Hawk and flies down to the surface.
- Hellas Fortitude
- Lodi: Just… reading the brief here: We're stealing uniforms for the mafia? On Mars?
- Eris: The Guardian is commandeering a shipment of Imperium uniforms and personnel codes.
- Lodi: May I ask why?
- Eris: To embed Totality Division spies with Bael's ranks. To turn the tide at the opportune moment.
- Lodi: Espionage! Now we're speaking my language.
- The Guardian disrupts Reformation batteries.
- Lodi: I recognize when someone knows more than I do. Your knowledge has changed the world, Ms. Morn. This Dredgen Bael that Mister Drifter is after — what do you think VI wants with him?
- Eris: As a Dredgen, Bael adheres to sword logic as a method of violence… and paracausal growth. Every death inflicted under sword logic tithes that death to a benefactor. And that enables greater subsequent death.
- Lodi: We already know Bael is tithing to VI. And VI wants to use it to escape.
- Eris: Escape what?
- The Guardian clears the area of Vex.
- Lodi: Escape reality. They are beings beyond our perception of matter; being bound to our reality and dependent on sapient life is like prison. The Outers need a massive singularity to escape through. The one on Kepler was puny.
- Eris: it will take an immense amount of tithes for the strength necessary to create such a gateway to the Ascendant Plane.
- Lodi: An extinction's worth?
- The Guardian detonates explosives to take out the shield for a Independent Wyvern and destroys it.
- Eris: I suppose I do have to go through you for all questions about the Nine, don't I?
- Lodi: We can one for one; I have about 40 questions just on worms. To be honest, when Zavala assigned us to collaborate, I was… hesitant. You are… very intimidating, Ms. Morn.
- Eris: Yes. And you are not. Which is how I knew I had to be careful. My godhood is behind me… and yours ahead.
- The Guardian approaches the exfiltration site.
- Lodi: Your ride's on the way, Guardian. Hang tight. Does Mr. Drifter always do this often? Setting up an accidental call to get his friends talking?
- Eris: Yes.
- Lodi: Has it ever worked before?
- Eris: Yes. Often.
- The Guardian successfully exfiltrates aboard a Hawk and returns to the cargo bay.
- Stolen NLS Crusier Cargo Bay, Hellas Fortitude
- Eris: I underestimated you, Lodi. Let us continue our work unraveling the Nine's plans. It has been frustrating recently, to confront them alone. I have learned that I am at my best when alongside others.
- Lodi: I'd like that. And hey, knowledge is a trade. You teach me about your expertise, I'll teach you mine.
- Eris: You are strange, Emissary. I could do with the novelty of it.
{Mission ends}
Step 38[edit]
Sell the extra Imperium uniforms into the black market.
- First bundle sold
- Second bundle sold
- Third bundle sold
There are more uniforms in the Reformation's stores than expected. Selling the extra uniforms off will make the reasons behind stealing them harder to discern and shouldn't prove to be lucrative. Surely Rao won't miss a surplus they weren't expecting to receive.
Reformation Sentry
Eternally watchful.
- First bundle
" The Vex lowers its head module and scans the Imperium uniform that you hand it. "
" "Analysis: exquisite plasteel meshwork. Conflicting ideologies aside, the Imperium crafts practical fashion." "
" "These are threads to suffer deletion for. They shall allow clandestine operations across Tharsis." "
" "We understand you require these for an operation. But please allow us to profit you in exchange for the leftovers." "
" "I shall alert other Sentries of the wardrobes you've acquired." "
- Second bundle
" The Vex lowers its head module and scans the Imperium uniform that you hand it. "
" "Zephyrus states the Drifter is behind Imperium lines. I hope this fashion you've acquired returns him safely." "
" "If not for the Drifter, the Reformation would remain in the Conductor's clutches. A most unprofitable timeline." "
" "Whatever secrets to Nightfall await on Venus, may this practical fashion allow you to supplant them in their own panoplies." "
- Third bundle
" The Vex lowers its head module and scans the Imperium uniform that you hand it. "
" "Zephyrus mentioned throughout the intranet that you intend subterfuge on Venus with this fashion—and the Totality." "
" The Sentry raise an appendage defensively. "We intend to keep your secret. But we will be watching Rao’s Barants." "
" "The Reformation will not abide territory acquisition by the Psion or her lackeys. It is what we would do in her position." "
Step 39[edit]
Speak with Rao in the Cantina.
- Rao visited
We should check back in with Rao nwo that you've acquired—and sold—Imperium uniforms for the Venus job.
" 'Never thought I would see a Guardian using our drop pods. Lume is beside himself.' "
" 'My handlers are offering rewards for returned uniforms, so I'll take any spares you might have.' "
" 'It's been a disaster for Lume and my Barant superiors today. Shame.' "
Speak 40[edit]
Speak with Aunor
- Aunor visited
Aunor has the details of our next job on Venus. Meet with her.
- Aunor: We have the shuttle. We have the call sign. It's time to take the fight to the Imperium. Get to their firebase on Venus and gut the Nightfall Station's shield generator. It's the only way to breach the station and destroy the core that the Nine have fashioned. Preferably before Bael fires on the Last City. Our personal con artist is hard at work occupying Bael and VI. We're relying entirely on his intel here, so keep your eyes peeled.
- Drifter: I won't be able to talk to you once you're in, and Blue's still not picking up. Gotta go.
- Aunor: This op has to run quiet. In and out—Imperium none the wiser. We do not have the backup to go loud. The Vanguard are occupied tracking their own leads on the Prophecy. Vanguard scouts report that matter across the Earth is transposing into other matter. Subtle, but hard to ignore. We help by cracking Nightfall wide open. Best case scenario, we take down the shields, board Nightfall Station, and end this before they extinguish every Lightbearer in the City. May the Light protect you, Guardian. And, if you wish it, the Darkness as well.
Aunor speaks quietly into her earpiece, then closes the call and waves you over. "We're all set for the job on Venus, Guardian. Drifter's sent word: reality and his visions are converging. It's time."
Step 41[edit]
Complete mission "The Long Con."
- Mission completed
You're now fully prepared to take down Nightfall Station's shield generator. Fly your commandeered shuttle to Venus, take down the generator, and exposes the station to attack.
- Note
- See The Long Con for full transcript.
Step 42[edit]
Speak to Blue on the Derlict.
- Blue visited
Blue wishes to speak with us, and only us. It seems important.
Blue
A Ghost who won't hold her tongue any longer.
" "Vanguard's real glad we got that Nightfall shield down. Sorry it took so long for me and Drifter to get our con straight." "
" "Anyway, Aunor's been digging, and…" "
" "Dredgen Bael's the son of a Foundry magnate from the City. His pops is Tex Mechanica's Cesar Bizet." "
" "This won't be all sunshine for Human-Guardian relations, but the Vanguard's on it." "
Step 43[edit]
Listen to Blue's plan.
- Incomplete
- Drifter: When I kicked this gig off, I had a fear. I knew the Nine were behind Bael and Imperium. Thought I'd do the scoundrel thing and leap before I look. Pull the rest of y'all with me. I let the hook set… and didn't fight it. Thought it would be easier to let fate drag me along as well.
- Blue: Gettin' a little shaggy dog, Drifter.
- Drifter: I hurt you, Blue.
- Blue: Yeah. You did. I won't forget that. Let's clean this up first.
- Drifter: Ah, heh… Take it away, Blue.
- Blue: Lume's flagship is in orbit around the Nightfall Station. We're gonna hit it first. Two birds, one stone. I'll take shotgun with the Guardian.
- Drifter: Whoo! Benching me that quick?
- Blue: No! You're our ride. We're finishing this together.
- Drifter: Ha. Right. Together.
Step 44[edit]
Complete mission "Glory Beyond."
- Mission completed
With the shield array on Venus disrupted, Nightfall Station is vulnerable.
- Note
- See Glory Beyond for full transcript.
Step 45[edit]
Retrieve Aunor's note from the bar.
- Aunor visited
There's an envelope with your name on it being kept at the bar.
The barkeep flags you down before you can leave the Cantina and draws your attention to a crumpled receipt tucked under Aunor's envelope. On its back side is a second note from her, this one written in far more haste:
Guardian,
You showed me I was wrong about the Darkness. Eido showed me I was wrong about the Prophecy. The people of the City deserve to know what we're all up against—so we can face it together.
The Syndicates are scrambling for resources and territory. All eyes are on them, and that means plenty of cover for this unauthorized action.
Eido has a line on a busted broadcaster. Parts for repair have to be available somewhere, but we're coming up empty. Help us fix it. Let's blow this thing wide open.
Ever forward,
Aunor
