"Jump coordinates matching an errant distress signal."
— Mission description

Presage (also known as Exotic Quest: Presage) is an Exotic Mission. The activity can be unlocked by retrieving an Intercepted Distress Signal in Firebase Obsidian. Once acquired, go to the Nucleus and speak to Rikia Belcira who will give you a quest titled The Voice on the Other Side. Completion of this activity rewards the Dead Man's Tale Exotic scout rifle; whereas completion on finding the Crown of Sorrow yields the Dead Man's Tale Catalyst.

Overview[edit]

The activity takes place aboard the derelict Cabal carrier, the Glykon Volatus; drifting on the periphery of the anomaly.

Fluorescent spores and Egregore fauna infest the interior of the ship, with the remains of Cabal Legionaries and Scorn Stalkers scattered throughout the various areas. The Glykon Volatus has been overrun with Corrupted Scorn and are being led by the Locus of Communion, the mutated result of Calus' attempts at communing with the Darkness through the Crown of Sorrow. The team heard numerous voices of the dead several times while navigating through the ship. Upon reaching the boiler room, the Guardian successfully defeated the Locus of Communion and traversed through further vents to reach the bridge of the ship. Once there, the team discovered that Katabasis had died and his corpse was strung up by the Egregore, slowly siphoning the Light from his body; his rifle was lain on the ground next to the fauna.

After numerous expeditions to the ship and uncovering all decrypted Key Code fragments, the team discovered the Crown of Sorrow underneath the bridge of the ship. It would be noted that the Crown was 'listening' and had been altered from its original design of possessing the wearer to assimilating two entities together. Dia also wished to recover this and return it to the main lab on Sainus for further inspection, but Caiatl strongly objected.

Transcript[edit]

Visit 1

Space, Derelict Vessel
The fireteam lands on Glykon's entrance.

  • Dia: Several months ago, a Cabal vessel bearing the name "Glykon" disappeared near the edge of the system. This ship matches its description and heading. So far, our hails have gone unanswered, and the distress signal continues to loop. You're clear for live-fire engagements. Board it, and find our missing Guardian.

The fireteam boards the ship through the open vent on the hull of the ship and crawls through the ventilation systems.

  • Dia:There's a distortion in the field- no, frequencies… like ripples meeting in conversation. Executing trace. Stand by.
  • Dia: I've sourced the distortion. There's an open patch to the ship's computer. Perhaps courtesy of our lost friend.

Arriving on the other side of the Glykon's entrance door, the fireteam notices the strange spores blocking the path forward. Shooting the spores grants passage onward.

  • Dia: Those spores are harmonizing with a nearby concentration of Darkness.
  • Dia: There is no Light here.

The fireteam passes through the spores and a room filled with strange growths and corpses of Cabal soldiers and Scorn and into the small hatch tunnel.

  • Dia: The Glykon's navigation system marks their destination as an anomaly… left in the wake of a Planet's disappearance beyond the system courtesy of The Witness.

The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The team journeys deeper into the ship, noticing the electric field blocking the direct path forward. The team circles around, encountering multiple Scorn and more spores on the way.

  • Dia: Guardian, you're not the only life sign aboard. I see at least one other. It may be our missing friend... it may not.
  • Dia: I've found the journal of Calus's scribe, Amsot. Translation as follows: "Today, Calus graced the Glykon with his presence and gazed upon the anomaly. His councilors prepare the exhibition chamber with gold from the Castellum. They are confident the crown is ready. The end will lay eyes upon him, and weep at his magnificence."

Waste Processing, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The fireteam falls down to an active trash compactor of the ship, but manages to disable it before being crushed to death, venturing further through an unlocked hatch on the compactor floor.

  • Dia: This ship's passageways no longer connect as they should.

The team enters a locked room and encounters a large Scorn ravager trying to smash through the door. The Scorn teleports away while sending minions in an attempt to eliminate the team.

  • Dia Movement- in the dark!

The fireteam survives the assault.

Hangar, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The team arrives at Glykon's hangar and battles through another, bigger horde of Scorn.

  • Dia: Hangar systems are intact... Why didn't they try to run?

Lab, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The team continues on from the hangar, experiencing voices from deceased friends or foes as they push forward through, disabling electric fields and unlocking the path forward.

  • Dia: Amsot kept notes on experiments as well. It seems that Scorn exposed to the anomaly all suffered contiguous neuron death. It consumed their minds. All but one, who "spoke with many dead voices." This survivor would become the centerpiece of their studies.

The Boiler, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The team eventually arrives at the boilers of the ship, where they encounter the same Scorn, now dubbed Locus of Communion, which attempts to kill them personally this time.

  • Dia: Put this decrepit creature to rest.

After a lengthy battle, the team manages to defeat the Locus and unlock the vent hatch to the command bridge of the ship.

  • Dia: Guardian. This anomaly left in the wake of the planet this ship visited… I have seen it and others like it. In place of each world the Darkness stole. At the edge of our heliopause. Calus meant to commune with the Darkness or rather The Witness.

The Bridge, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
On the bridge, they find the dangling corpse of the Guardian they were searching for and his weapon, Dead Man's Tale, propped up on the ground below him.

  • Dia: Faint traces of Light. That thing...was a Guardian. We're too late- far too late. Take the rifle. It was offered, was it not? Better in your hands than left for another. I'll speak to Rikia about authorizing exploratory outings. If we can recover our lost friend's Ghost, we may learn more of how he died. Return to the Nucleus. We must assess our findings.
The team grabs the rifle and the mission ends.
Visit 2

Space, Derelict Vessel
The fireteam lands on Glykon's entrance.

  • Dia: Exploratory outing: Presage. Designation: SC-999. I am receiving you.
  • Caiatl: Not finished picking at Cabal bones?
  • Dia: Caiatl? Heh, have you no more officers to send in your place?
  • Caiatl: You're trespassing, and I need information on that ship. Withdraw.
  • Dia: This is a rescue operation for a wayward Ghost. Interference here would not end well for you.
  • Caiatl: Rescue? The Cabal are not animals. Send in your Guardian, but Calus belongs to me. As long as I see him dragged from this hole, I don't care who does it.
  • Dia: Then keep your distance and leave us be.
  • Caiatl: I've lived aboard these ships. I know their systems. You need me.
  • Dia: We shall see.

The fireteam boards the ship through the open vent on the hull of the ship and crawls through the ventilation systems.

  • Dia: What will you do with Calus if he is found?
  • Caiatl: Autocrats only know obsession. His gluttony exposed us. So I'll feed him all the trimmings of his failure. Until his belly bursts.

Arriving on the other side of the Glykon's entrance door, the fireteam notices the strange spores blocking the path forward. Shooting the spores grants passage onward.

  • Caiatl: How many Cabal died for this?
  • Dia: Enough, it would seem, to achieve the emperor's desired result.
  • Caiatl: Emperor? This derelict is his empire. Sacrificed to pride; paid for in blood.

The fireteam passes through the spores and a room filled with strange growths, corpses of Cabal soldiers and Scorn and into the small hatch tunnel.

  • Dia: At one time. Their Ether was bound with Darkness. Now they're Scorn: rot-minded and easily swayed to violence.
  • Caiatl: The perfect vessel, if one could keep them contained.

The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The team journeys deeper into the ship, noticing the electric field blocking the direct path forward. The team circles around, encountering multiple Scorn and more spores on the way.

  • Dia: What was it like? That… inevitability?
  • Caiatl: Like burning alive, and realizing the flames are just the beginning. Gasps of scorching air. Helpless panic. The smell. Was it any different when Ghaul seized Alfehein? Survivors like us are embers in the dark.
  • Dia: Delicate…
  • Caiatl: Defiant.

Waste Processing, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The fireteam falls down to an active trash compactor of the ship, but manages to disable it before being crushed to death, venturing further through an unlocked hatch on the compactor floor.

  • Caiatl: Dia sends you through a trash compactor. If you were Cabal, I would lift you into the stars.
  • Dia: You have never sounded more like your father.

The team enters a locked room and encounters the Locus of Communion trying to smash through the door. The Scorn teleports away while sending minions in an attempt to eliminate the team.

  • Dia: I thought you killed that.

The fireteam survives the assault.

  • Caiatl: The Cabal have suffered too many losses for vanity. Petulance. First Calus. Then Ghaul.
  • Dia: But not you?
  • Caiatl: Don't insult me. I’ve grown wise from watching monuments topple. No mercy for false gods.

Hangar, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The team arrives at Glykon's hangar and battles through another, bigger horde of Scorn.

  • Caiatl: Half these ships ran routes to the Edge of the System and the Shrouded World.
  • Dia: Where they harvested the Scorn for their experiments.
  • Caiatl: This hangar took in ships from all over the system. The Leviathan is ours. But Calus could be lurking at any of those coordinates. It is dissapointing he escaped his prized vessel turned exile.... (trails off)

Lab, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The team continues on from the hangar, experiencing voices from deceased friends or foes as they push forward through, disabling electric fields and unlocking the path forward.

  • Caiatl: Your missing Guardian was working with my father.
  • Dia: So it would appear.
  • Caiatl: If his Ghost were recovered, would its memories be… accessible?
  • Dia: That remains to be seen.
  • Caiatl: No. You burned away. I saw it.
  • Dia: What do you hear, Empress?
  • Caiatl: Mistakes, thrown on the pyre of my past. You… heard something different?
  • Dia: The ignorance of my youth; the pain of change. Unproven faith wilted by logic.

The Boiler, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The team eventually arrives at the boilers of the ship, where they encounter the same Scorn, now dubbed Locus of Communion, which attempts to kill them personally this time.

After a lengthy battle, the team manages to defeat the Locus and unlock the vent hatch to the command bridge of the ship.

  • Dia: I believe I've found a record of first contact with this… Voice. It says: "I Amsot, scribe of Glykon, rejoice. The Scorn are one, rejoice. They bear the weight of the crown elegantly, rejoice. They whisper anticipations, rejoice. Our emperor hears the Voice of salvation. Rejoice!"
  • Caiatl: Sycophants - all of them. Enabling his madness.

The Bridge, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
On the bridge, they find the dangling corpse of the Guardian they were searching for. They interact with it to end the mission.

  • Caiatl: What is that thing?
  • Dia: Our lost Guardian.
  • Caiatl: Can your Ghosts undo that?
  • Dia: Not so far as I'm aware.
  • Caiatl: Then why are you searching for it?
  • Dia: Answers. Same as you, Empress.
  • Caiatl: If there is nothing else, I must analyze the Glykon's archives. My cruiser will monitor the situation here.
  • Dia: A path to the Ghost still eludes us. Until we return, then.
Visit 3

Space, Derelict Vessel
The fireteam lands on Glykon's entrance.

  • Dia: I'm receiving you, Guardian. Coalition Command saw value in our investigation. We are tasked with the recovery of any information or relics pertaining to the Darkness.
  • Caiatl: Welcome back to the Glykon, Guardians.
  • Dia: I expected you to be gone by now, since you know these ships so well (Presuming she already investigated the ship in their absence).
  • Caiatl: This ship is Cabal. I have a duty to its crew while Calus remains free.
  • Dia: What have you found in our absence?
  • Caiatl: Hidden records in the Glykon's mainframe... from your lost Guardian. They're decrypting as we speak.

The fireteam boards the ship through the open vent on the hull of the ship and crawls through the ventilation systems.

  • Caiatl: Transmitting the first message.
  • Unknown Guardian: He's been drinking more and more of the royal slop. I see him pawing at the air for hours, laughing, eyes glazed over. There's another alignment tomorrow. Maybe I can slip the hangar and get lost before anyone notices. I know a few Guardians who might want to hear what I've seen.

Arriving on the other side of the Glykon's entrance door, the fireteam notices the strange spores blocking the path forward. Shooting the spores grants passage onward.

  • Dia: Did your data mining yield anything about a crown?
  • Caiatl: Amsot detailed an ornate procession that brought a Hive crown from Leviathan to Glykon. It allowed the Darkness to invade the Scorn's thoughts.
  • Dia: Not the Darkness, the Entity... The Witness.
  • Caiatl: The two are entwined. Does the difference matter?
  • Dia: That there is difference makes our understanding of the Darkness a façade.

The fireteam passes through the spores and a room filled with strange growths and corpses of Cabal soldiers and Scorn and into the small hatch tunnel.

  • Dia: What do you presume they are? The crown? The Witness?
  • Caiatl: Idols. Sustained by fixation until there is nothing left to reap.

The Glykon, Derelict Vessel

Lab, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
The team continues on from the hangar, experiencing voices from deceased friends or foes as they push forward through, disabling electric fields and unlocking the path forward.

  • Caiatl: Another decrypted entry.
  • Unknown Guardian: We hit Acheron's wall and sank. Straight down to the deep. Gly's in a bad way after the dive: all twisted. I'm all twisted. Whole crew rattling around in my skull, like they're thinking for me. Scorn. What they used to be. What they are now. Dive must have opened the cells. Someone's gotta clip their horns, especially the big one, or... or we're dead.

The Bridge, The Glykon, Derelict Vessel
On the bridge, they find the dangling corpse of the Guardian they were searching for. They interat with it to end the mission.

  • Caiatl: Another entry transmitting:
  • Unknown Guardian: I didn't think it was true. All that talk about the Darkness — but it saw him. Something in there stared right back into Calus's hungry eyes. Then the rotted tykes started shrieking and, and I knew... I knew I shouldn't have come here.

If the team collects all of the key code fragments within the Glykon, they can access a room under Katabasis' body where they find the Crown of Sorrow surrounded by dead Scorn.

  • Caiatl: What monstrosity is this?
  • Dia: The Crown of Sorrow. A Hive artifact of devilish craftsmanship, meant to subvert the wearer's will. I suspected it was the crown in question.
  • Caiatl: More Hive witchcraft. It should be destroyed.
  • Dia: It has been altered from its original design. Opened. Instead of controlling minds, it... it's meant to merge them. It... is listening. We cannot leave the crown free.
  • Caiatl: You think you can contain it? So did Calus. How long before your audacity and arrogance damns your people, Dia?
  • Dia: Your warning is noted, Empress, but this is Coalition space. Will you ensure the crown is undisturbed while I make preparations for its recovery?
  • Caiatl: The Cabal are not at your disposal. Do so at your own peril.

Clues[edit]

Visit 1
Entangled Cabal
  • Dia: Sarcophilous growths, with cores of Darkness. The material is organic. It reminds me of Eregore. Curious. The Cabal here, their minds hang suspended in the death throes of cognition; falling into a singularity.
Totem
  • Dia: Scorn. They did not come from Calus's Menagerie. The Dark Ether in this device has been tampered with: its connection to the Darkness galvanized, rooted. Calus always did embody a clever sort of madness.
Jumpship
  • Dia: Jump logs indicate this ship made berth from the Leviathan. Its pilot has an officer's clearance; our Guardian appears to have a long and storied history with the emperor.
Dark Ether Tank
  • Dia: Wine? No... concentrated Dark Ether. These are similar to Gahlran's chamber in the royal baths, but without life support systems. Micro etchings along the interior walls… scratches.

Address

  • Dia: This is an address from Calus to his crew. "I chose Gahlran, and his frailty betrayed us. He was too pure, too alone. Our new guests are neither. A glorious chain of Dark minds. An open mouth for the One in the Darkness, that it may sing in exaltation of my majesty. Greatness recognizes greatness. To invoke the attention of the End, our offer must be great.
Visit 2
Anomaly scan
  • Dia: Scans of the anomaly they chased, left in the unknown planet's wake. It's part of the Darkness, one piece of a larger web. Others align with known missing planets and moons. Even those swallowed by the Eye of Doom in Doomspace, what the hell. As well as many points far far beyond the system's borders…
  • Caiatl: Calus's scribe identifies a Voice in the Darkness. One of their dead mother, of dead enemies, of Ghaul. They say it spoke to Calus in his own voice. Taught him how to commune. His councilors work to isolate and contact the Entity that speaks.
Scorpius Turret
  • Caiatl: A Scorpius Turret. Its munitions are spent. The battle report shows skirmishes across the ship, battling several containment breaches. Still, Calus pressed on.
Incendior pack
  • Dia: A refuse heap. Darkness, soot, Ether... They were burning the spent Scorn to ash.
  • Caiatl: Cabal regalia tracks combat data. I can assess this... An Incendiata, deployed to halt the Scorn reanimation. The Incendiata was later embedded with a team sent to detonate the ship's reactor.
  • Dia: They rose on their own? That is a new and concerning development.
  • Caiatl: Resurrection does not make one invulnerable. Your kind taught us that. These orders did not come from Calus.

Dead Cheftain

  • Caiatl: Calus's surgeons experimented on the Scorn. Cranial dissections. Dark Ether drownings to engorge them.
  • Dia: Psions carved telepathic imprints into their brains. Linked them together in shared consciousness. Their collective mind was then opened through an artifact. A crown... of possession.
  • Caiatl: All to exploit their connection to the Darkness. Had Calus seen Torobatl fall, as I did, would he have learned then?
Dead Ghost
  • Dia: A Ghost was injured here. The remnants of its Light pooled around a Dark center. A memory, preserved in physical form.
  • Unknown Guardian: You said you wouldn't... you promised. Everything you say is a lie! [gunshot]

Chalice of Opulence

  • Dia: A chalice of opulence. The inscription reads: "To my captain, cast your shadow in the face of Darkness, that you might drink of its beauty and grow fat."
  • Caiatl: Your Guardian was a traitor, then. Seduced by Calus's posturing. Like so many powerful fools who think themselves invincible.
Visit 3

Frame

  • Dia: Our lost Guardian must have sent this frame to broadcast their distress signal.
  • Caiatl: This interface is of Human design.
  • Dia: It recounts a descent into the anomaly... Gravitational oscillations broke and reformed the Glykon many times over. It is as if every permutation of the ship's existence collided in one space.

Array

  • Caiatl: This array contains research logs: The Entity's Voice emanates from the grave of this Athenaeum World. The Scorn babble to the void and attentively await response. Our emperor's vision is at hand. Tomorrow, we pierce the anomaly's veil. We are ready. We have communed and are adrift between worlds. It controls the lower decks. Dragging the flame. Dead whispers in the walls. There is no way back…

Amsot log

  • Dia: Scribe Amsot states, "The emperor shows us we chase a mirage. The Darkness is nothing but a great basin of formless thoughts. A vast tangle of composting chaos." Calus seeks the Entity who speaks through the Darkness.
  • Caiatl: The Darkness is a primal force? Wielded — like the Light? How simple.
  • Dia: Able to be brandished against Xivu Arath?
  • Caiatl: And fall into the burrow of an ambush predator? Like Umun. Like Eramis. I think not. But tools can be broken. Forces can be stopped, and those who wield them can be disarmed.

Imperial supplies

  • Caiatl: So… this is where they died. Their sacrifice is noted. Their names will be honored.
  • Dia: Why were they sent?
  • Caiatl: Accessing the Glykon's mainframe required a direct connection.
