"We've traced Yor's steps from beginning to end and back again. We've studied his reign — the terror he seeded, the violence he wrought as if free of conscience. Only to discover a true and terrible thing: he was not simply the monster the legends claim him to be."
— Teben Grey[1]

The Shadows of Yor are a group of Guardians stated to idolize the infamous Dredgen Yor to the point of utilizing replicas of Yor's signature weapon, Thorn, and adopting new names in honor of him. Their overarching purpose is to follow Yor's path up to but not past the point of outright corruption.[1]

In truth, the Shadows of Yor were founded by an undercover Shin Malphur after he noticed that some Guardians were beginning to show interest in Dredgen Yor. Aiming to weed out the weak-minded and corrupt, Shin forged a new identity as "Dredgen Vale" and together with Teben Grey, founded the group, seeking to succeed where Yor failed by walking the line between Light and Darkness without losing himself, and find others strong enough to do the same.[2]

History[edit]

Sometime following his showdown against Dredgen Yor at Dwindler's Ridge, Shin Malphur sought to eradicate the weak-minded and corrupt among the Guardians that would attempt to follow in Yor's footsteps.[2] After meeting another Guardian named Teben Grey and adopting new identities, the two would seek to study Dredgen Yor's teachings.[3] After being met with dismissal and threats from the Vanguard and Lord Shaxx,[4] Teben and Zyre would make their way to Dwindler's Ridge and found Yor's derelict Jumpship hanging in low-orbit above the site of the showdown.[5] There, they found runes carved onto thick leather, but were unable to translate them.[6] Teben and Zyre would spend some time attempting to translate these runes, without any luck, until they were able to get the info they needed from Cryptarchs.[7] With it, they were able to decipher the the runes and found they were a roadmap of sorts Yor had set out. And so, they would collate what they had deciphered into a new 7th Book of Sorrow.[8]

The Shadows would begin to be noticed by the Vanguard around the SIVA Crisis. Although they assert that their Thorns have been cleansed of any influence of the Darkness,[9] they exhibited increasingly strange behavior, including ignoring objectives in the Crucible and killing other Guardians during matches seemingly for the pleasure of killing.[10][11][12][13] Shin would attempt to bring these concerns to Ikora Rey, who told him that they were monitering the group. However, Shin believed that they were not taking them seriously enough.[14]
