Nokris, Herald of Xol is a Hive god[1][2], the son of Oryx[3] and the herald of the Worm God, Xol.[4]

Overview

Nokris was originally the second son of Oryx, brother to Crota, but was disfavored by his father for his physical weakness. Seeking to prove himself, Nokris approached the Worm Gods themselves. However, while most of the worms rejected the disfavored son, Xol, Will of the Thousands remained. Fearing an attack from Yul, the Honest Worm, Xol made a pact with the forgotten child and the two departed to find a world to rule.[3] Norkis informed his god that he had chosen the planet Mars.

Oryx soon learned about his son's activities and was furious. The King of the Hive then removed all references of his disowned son from the World's Grave and the Books of Sorrow.[1] Only a statue remained. The rest of the Hive began to view Nokris as a heretic for going outside of the Sword Logic, speaking about resurrection.

During this time, Nokris and Xol became trapped within the frozen ice caps of Mars.

The only reference to Nokris known to the Guardians prior to his awakening on Mars was a statue found in the Dreadnaught near the Altar of Oryx[5], beside similar statues of Crota and Oryx. The Guardian's Ghost infers it is a Hive god from the accompanying Hive glyphs but couldn't recognize the symbol.[1] At Eris Morn's request Asher Mir scoured his library for references to Nokris but found none.[6].

War with The Warmind

Many centuries later, after the deaths of Oryx and Crota and the end of the Red War, Nokris and his master were awakened by Warsat impacts. Together, they sought the destruction of the Warmind Rasputin for delaying them and allow them to rule the planet. However, interference came in the form of the Guardian working with Ana Bray. Nokris encountered the Guardian during their mission of using a shard of the Traveler as bait to lure Xol and destroy him. However, Nokris faces them instead and fights the warrior of light in a fierce battle. Despite his power, Nokris was defeated and his master would soon fall to the hands of the Guardian with the aid of Rasputin.

Trivia

  • The word "Nokris" might be derived from "Noctuidae", which is a family of moth, the wing patterns of which resemble the Shroud of Flies Hunter Cloak pattern.[7] Similarly, "Nokri" is a Hebrew word for "alien" or "adulteress".[8] Relatedly, the prefix "Nok" could be a derivation of "Noc", or "Nocturnal", the Greek Goddess of the night; similarly, the Roman translation is "Nox".
  • Nokris's form greatly resembles that of the Wizard Morph. If he is a Wizard, then he would the first, and possibly only, male Wizard among the Hive
  • Unlike his brother and father, Nokris doesn't speak to the Guardians directly.
