A Grenade is a type of Ability used by Guardians and enemies alike.

Gameplay

Guardians

Grenades are one of the three core aspects of a Guardian's Class and Subclass, alongside Super and Melee abilities. Grenades are normally thrown a certain distance, and detonate upon hitting the ground or a foe, usually inflicting Elemental damage in an explosion, and often applying other effects, depending on the subclass. In Destiny, grenades were restricted per class, with one shared, but in current Destiny 2, all grenades are shared across classes.

Grenade cooldowns are modified by Discipline. The effects of grenades can be further modified by passive abilities, Aspects and Fragments and Exotics. Examples that only affect one type of grenade are found on that grenade's page.

A Solar Grenade in action

Solar Grenades

  • Solar Grenade: A grenade that creates a flare of Solar Light which continually damages and scorches targets trapped inside.
  • Firebolt Grenade: A grenade that unleashes bolts of damaging Solar Light at nearby targets and slightly scorches them.
  • Fusion Grenade: An explosive grenade that attaches to its targets, damaging and moderately scorching them on detonation.
  • Incendiary Grenade: A grenade that explodes in a fiery burst and heavily scorches nearby targets.
  • Thermite Grenade: A grenade that sends forth a line of fire, dealing damage and scorching targets in its path.
  • Swarm Grenade: A grenade that detonates on impact, releasing multiple drones that seek nearby enemies. Each drone slightly scorches affected targets.
  • Tripmine Grenade: An explosive grenade that sticks to surfaces and detonates when enemies pass through its laser trigger, dealing damage and moderately scorching them.
  • Healing Grenade: A grenade that cures allies on impact and creates an Orb of benevolent Solar Light, granting restoration to allies when picked up.
Alterations and Interactions
  • The Gunpowder Gamble Gunslinger Aspect makes Solar final blows load a Solar explosive that can be thrown and shot in midair for an ignition.
  • The Heat Rises Dawnblade Aspect allows the player to consume their grenade to gain a small amount of cure and the Heat Rises buff, which increases their aerial prowess.
  • The Ember of Blistering Fragment makes defeating targets with ignitions grant grenade energy.
  • The Ember of Resolve Fragment makes grenade final blows cure you.
  • Solar grenade final blows grant the maximum amount of Firewalker stacks for The Path of Burning Steps Exotic Armor.

Arc Grenades

  • Skip Grenade: A grenade which splits on impact, creating multiple projectiles which seek targets.
  • Flux Grenade: An explosive grenade that attaches to targets.
  • Arcbolt Grenade: A grenade that chains bolts of lightning to nearby targets.
  • Pulse Grenade: A grenade that periodically damages targets within its explosion radius.
  • Storm Grenade: A grenade that calls down a focused lightning storm.
  • Flashbang Grenade: An explosive grenade that damages and blinds nearby targets.
  • Lightning Grenade: A grenade that sticks to any surface and emits bolts of lightning.
Alterations and Interactions
  • The Spark of Magnitude Fragment makes lingering Arc grenades (Lightning Grenade, Pulse Grenade, and Storm Grenade) have extended duration.
  • The Spark of Shock Fragment makes grenades jolt targets.
  • The Getaway Artist Exotic Armor allows a Stormcaller to consume their grenade to gain an improved Arc Soul.

Void Grenades

  • Axion Bolt: A bolt of Void Light that forks on impact into smaller bolts that seek out targets.
  • Magnetic Grenade: A grenade that attaches to targets and explodes twice.
  • Suppressor Grenade: An explosive grenade that suppresses, preventing targets from using abilities for a short time.
  • Scatter Grenade: A grenade that splits into multiple submunitions and covers a large area with multiple explosions.
  • Void Spike: A grenade that attaches to any surface and emits a torrent of damaging Void Light.
  • Void Wall: A grenade that creates a horizontal wall of burning Void Light.
  • Vortex Grenade: A grenade that creates a vortex that pulls targets inward and continuously damages those trapped inside.
Alterations and Interactions
  • The Echo of Exchange Fragment makes melee final blows grant grenade energy.
  • The Echo of Instability Fragment makes defeating targets with grenades grant Volatile Rounds to the player's Void weapons.
  • The Echo of Provision Fragment makes damaging targets with grenades grants melee energy.
  • The Echo of Remnants Fragment makes lingering grenade effects (Vortex Grenade, Void Wall, Void Spike, and Axion Bolt) have increased duration.
  • The Echo of Undermining Fragment makes Void grenades weaken targets.

Stasis Grenades

  • Glacier Grenade: A grenade that creates walls out of Stasis crystals to block damage and freeze targets; these walls can be shattered for damage.
  • Duskfield Grenade: A grenade that shatters on impact, leaving behind a field that slows targets and freezes those who do not leave the volume.
  • Coldsnap Grenade: A grenade that freezes on impact and sends another seeker to find and freeze targets.
Alterations and Interactions

  • Shackle Grenade: A grenade that, on impact, creates a suspending explosion, suspending enemies and creating smaller secondary explosions.
  • Threadling Grenade: A grenade that creates 3 Threadlings on impact that seek out enemies and explode.
Alterations and Interactions
  • The Threadrunner's Widow's Silk Aspect grants all grenades a second charge.
  • The Thread of Ascent Fragment causes uses of grenades to reload equipped weapons and increase airborne effectivness and handling.
  • The Thread of Generation Fragment causes damage dealt to grant grenade energy.

General Alterations and Interactions

  • The Adrenaline Junkie perk reaches max stacks instantly with grenade final blows.
  • The Demolitionist perk makes kills with the weapon generate grenade energy, and reloads the weapon upon activating a grenade ability.
  • The Osmosis perk changes the weapon's damage type to match the player's subclass upon using a grenade, until the weapon is stowed.

Enemies

Most enemy races have access to Grenades, usually wielded by low ranking members of the faction. Fallen Dregs use Shock Grenades and Vex Hobgoblins use Slap Grenades in Destiny, while in Destiny 2, in addition to the above, Cabal Legionaries have their Cabal Frag Detonators, Hive Acolytes have Acolyte Grenades and the new Scorn Stalkers use Scorn Grenades. In addition to this, Ultra enemies may have the ability to use their brethren's Grenades even if not of the same class, like Phry'zhia, the Insatiable in the Grasp of Avarice Dungeon.

Nearby combatant Grenades are highlighted with a bomb symbol on the player's HUD, pointing towards them. Some sacrificial enemies, like Lucent Moths and Vex Seekers, are also highlighted this way.

Despite technically being Weapons, enemy Grenades are considered Abilities, and their use can be inhibited through Suppression, Slow and Anti-Overload effects.
