"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."
The following is a verbatim transcription of an official document for archival reasons. As the original content is transcribed word-for-word, any possible discrepancies and/or errors are included.

Step 1[edit]

Go to the Hall of Heroes.

  • Incomplete

Crowds of holograms are gathering at the Hall of Heroes. It's time for Rohan's core to be included among the memorialized Cloud Striders who came before him, and Nimbus would like your company at the ceremony.

{Cutscene}

Hall of Heroes, Neomuna

Neomuni gather in the Hall of Heroes as Quinn Laghari gives a eulogy for Rohan. Nimbus holds Rohan's data core.

  • Quinn Laghari: Today, we honor Relentless Rohan. His service… his sacrifice. More than a protector of Neomuna, he was a true Cloud Strider. He cut his years short, so that the whole of humanity may thrive far into the future.

Nimbus keels and inserts Rohan's data core into a pedestal.

  • Nimbus: Today, we suffer… so tomorrow can live on.

Nimbus stands and leaves the Hall of Heroes. Behind them, a sever memorial for Rohan is woven from the pedestal.

Step 2[edit]

Visit Nimbus to find out why they left Rohan's induction ceremony early.

  • Nimbus Visited

Nimbus clearly had something on their mind when they left Rohan's induction ceremony. Talk to the Cloud Strider to find out what.

Transcript[edit]

  • Nimbus: Oh, hey, Guardian. Induction ceremony wrap up all right? The citizens did a good job improvising. Traditionally, both Cloud Striders are there for the, uh, final handoff, but… Rohan wasn't here, so… And if he were, he wouldn't be moaning about the past! He'd be too busy cracking open the Veil, jumping through the portal, and knocking the Witness back on its multiple asses. You know, the Vex were working on a copycat Veil. Oh yeah! Rohan stumbled on it in the Nexus, YEARS ago. It was half-finished then, but he was convinced that the Vex had the goods on the original… Goods we'd need one day. Just think! We wrestle the Veil's secret out of the Vex, and we're one step closer to kicking down the Witness's door. But first, we gotta track down Rohan's notes. So, what d'ya say? Help me follow in the big guy's footsteps?

Nimbus admits to leaving the induction ceremony early; it doesn't feel right when Neomuna is overrun and the Witness is at large.

If you ask them, a better way to honor Rohan's legacy would be to finish his unfinished business and find the Vex's copycat Veil.

Apparently, early in his training, Rohan stumbled on the Vex building what he believed was a cop of the Veil. Convinced this was a threat, he spent the rest of his career trying to retrace his steps through the Nexus. Nimbus believes Rohan succeeded right before the Shadow Legion's invasion.

They ask for your help finding Rohan's notes, hidden all around the city in encrypted data packets. To recover the data, you will need to cipher qubits, which can be collected from the Vex.

Defeat Vex in Neomuna to collect qubits and recover Rohan's data packets.

Step 3[edit]

Collect cipher qubits from the Vex and use them to extract Rohan's data from Cloud Accretions in Neomuna.

  • Cipher qubits
  • Data extractions available
  • Resources extraced

Collect cipher qubits from the Vex and use them to extract Rohan's data from Cloud Accretions in Neomuna.

One data extraction costs 8 cipher qubits.

Step 4[edit]

Locate the final data packet in Maya's Retreat.

  • Data packet located

Ghost has traced the last of the encrypted data packets to Maya's Retreat. Head there to recover it and complete Rohan's notes.

Transcript[edit]

  • Nimbus: Hey, friends! Any updates? I got Osiris to help with the decoding, and… Eh, to tell ya the truth, he's getting on my nerves. Keeps asking how I'm doing, giving me these weird looks, like… [sighs] I don't even know what.
  • Ghost: You won't have to endure it much longer. We just got a lock on the last data packet. It's… huh. Looks like it's inside a conflux.
  • Nimbus: Oh yeah! Rohan was always tinkering with those things. I thought he was mining for lasers to stick in his gun.

Step 5[edit]

Survive the Vex attack and recover the data packet from their conflux.

  • Data packet recovered

Ghost has pinpointed the final data packet in Maya's Retreat, but the Vex aren't taking too kindly to any interference with their conflux. Survive the Vex attack and recover the data packet.

Transcript[edit]

  • Ghost: OK, Nimbus, the last packet is on its — wait, what's this pattern? Is this part of Rohan's notes?
  • Nimbus: What's it look like?
  • Ghost: An hourglass.
  • Nimbus: Hmm. And the notes mostly talked about a garden, so… not sure I get the connection. Not yet, anyway. Let's regroup. We'll have the last packet decoded by the time you get here.

Step 6[edit]

Regroup with Nimbus and Osiris in Radiosonde to find out what was in Rohan's notes.

  • Incomplete

Nimbus has recruited Osiris's help with decrypting Rohan's notes. Regroup with them to find out what was in Rohan's notes and decide next steps.

Transcript[edit]

The Guardian finds Nimbus and Osiris talking to each other in the Radiosonde.

  • Nimbus: Too risky?! Since when were you scared of a little risk?
  • Osiris: The Black Garden does not contain "a little" risk. As for this "second Veil", to the Vex of the Sol Divisive, it was the Black Heart.
  • Nimbus: Who cares what it's called? It's our chance to follow the Witness!
  • Osiris: Except it was destroyed, years ago. Nimbus, I understand how grief can make one behave… recklessly. But you can't—
  • Nimbus: Cloud Striders don't grieve. Death is just part of the flow.
  • Osiris: Ah, Guardian. Perhaps you can convince our friend that the Black Heart is a dead end.
  • Nimbus: Hang on. If that Heart thing is — WAS the same thing as the Veil, then its blueprint can be our guide to the real thing! C'mon, all we gotta do is follow Rohan's instructions. He's never steered us wrong before!
  • Osiris: You're right. It's at least worth a closer look. But please, let the Guardian handle the groundwork. This city can't afford to lose another Cloud Strider.

Osiris turns and transmats away.

  • Nimbus: All I heard was, "you're right", so let's get cracking! I'll send you a list of what we need.

Nimbus turns and transmats away.

Step 7[edit]

Retrieve a Vex compass from the Lost Sector in Liming Harbor.

  • Compass retrieved

Rohan's notes revealed that not only had he entered the Black Garden, but also he devised a passkey to return. To start, you will need a Vex compass.

Step 8[edit]

Create chaos in Ahimsa Park to draw Shadow Legion forces away from Calus's ship. The more you use your abilities to defeat combatants, the more mayhem you create.

  • Combatants defeated X/100

The other component of the passkey is in Calus's ship. Create chaos in Ahimsa Park to draw out Shadow Legion forces. Ability final blows amp up the mayhem.

Step 9[edit]

The passkey's other component is a Seed of Silver Wings. One can be found in Calus's trove deep within the Typhon Imperator.

  • Seed obtained

Rohan's notes call for a "starting seed." Osiris interprets this as a Seed of Silver Wings. One can be found in Calus's trove in the Typhon Imperator.

Transcript[edit]

The Guardian collects the Seed of Silver Wings from the Typhon Imperator.

  • Ghost: That's the last item on the list, and it's a powerful one. We should hurry back to Nimbus…
  • Osiris: I wouldn't rush. They're not in the best of moods at the moment. I reminded them that, however broadly they'd like to interpret the Cloud Strider's oath, their duties lie squarely on Neomuna. Not in the Witness's playground.
  • Ghost: So you convinced them to follow the rules? That doesn't sound like you. Or Nimbus.
  • Osiris: I have learned from my mistakes, you know. And I can see when someone is about to repeat them. Nimbus may think they're after the Black Heart's blueprint, but really, they want a distraction from their grief.
  • Ghost: How'd they take it when you said that?
  • Nimbus: They weren't a fan of the suggestion. But they agreed to make the passkey and let you finish the job.

Step 10[edit]

Return to Nimbus in Striders' Gate to build the passkey.

  • Nimbus visited

You have the necessary components. Soon you'll have a passkey to the Black Garden. Return to Nimbus in Striders' Gate.

Nimbus takes the Vex compass and Seed of Silver Wings off your hands. They don't mention Osiris insisting they stay behind, though their dampened enthusiasm says it all.

As they recheck Rohan's notes, they explain the passkey's design. The compass, turned to the shifting unpredictability of the Nexus, should bring you right to the Black Garden's door.

There, the Seed of Silver Wings, reflective with the Garden's fluctuating DNA, should allow you to enter as if you belong.

Nimbus passes their Cloud Strider core. A whirl of nanites fly out, welding the components together.

As they work, Nimbus points out a name in Rohan's notes: the Conceptual Mind.

This is the architect Rohan saw building the Black Heart 10 years ago. It's also your best chance at unlocking the Veil, following the Witness, and bringing a worthy end to Rohan's unfinished business.

They hand over the finished passkey and wish you good luck.

Head to In.Gress to launch the "What Remains" mission.

Step 11[edit]

Complete the mission "What Remains."

  • Mission completed

The Conceptual Mind is your best shot at unlocking the Veil. Use Rohan's passkey to enter the Black Garden to claim its memory core.

Note

See What Remains for a full transcript of the mission.

Step 12[edit]

Bring the Conceptual Mind's memory core to Nimbus in Striders' Gate.

  • Nimbus visited

Nimbus will be glad to hear about your success in the Black Garden. Bring the Conceptual Mind's memory core to them in Striders' Gate.

Transcript[edit]

  • Nimbus: You got the goods. Osiris rallied a team of researchers while you were out. They've been itching to get their mitts on this. I knew you'd get the job done. Seriously, I don't want you to think I… charged in there because I didn't trust ya. I was just… I guess I was just after something else. Something you can't find in the Black Garden. Or anywhere else. I thought I had accepted death. That's part of the whole Cloud Strider deal, y'know? "Our service, our sacrifice." I'm not afraid of dying. Really. But I never considered what it'd be like to… to keep fighting when… [sighs] And I know this pain is to remind me that I'm still breathing, but… How can I, when there's this giant hole where a person used to be? He didn't prepare me for this part. At least now I get why Osiris is… the way that he is. I owe him an apology. And I owe you my thanks, Guardian. Thank you. For everything.

Nimbus admits they weren't as settled with Rohan's death as they thought they were. Cloud Striders are trained to accept death as a part of the flow. To Nimbus, that meant pushing through the pain, trying to outrun the grief.

Seeing Rohan's gun in the Black Garden forced them to stop and realize just how much they missed him.

Nimbus thanks you for seeing the mission through. With the Conceptual Mind's memory core, the odds of unlocking the Veil and following the Witness have shot up.

Nimbus promises to deliver the memory core so Osiris and Neomuna's researchers can start decrypting it.

There's just one stop Nimbus has to make first.

Go to the Hall of Heroes to honor those who cut their years short for the sake of humanity.

Step 13[edit]

Go to the Hall of Heroes to honor those who cut their years short for the sake of humanity.

  • Incomplete

Go to the Hall of Heroes to honor those who cut their years short for the sake of humanity.

{Cutscene}

The Guardian approaches the server memorial for Rohan.

The camera pans from the wrecked memorials for Siegebreaker, Stargazer, The Strider, Bluejay and Maelstrom to a podium next to Rohan's memorial with Sagira's dead shell on it.

  • Nimbus: When you said you understood… I never asked why.
  • Osiris: She saved me. As she always did. Throughout all the lives we shared, she was always my better. Just before she… She told me, "Don't lose hope in the darkness." She must have known what I'd find here.
  • Nimbus: What was her name?
  • Osiris: Sagira.
