"Ghaul, one of our greatest enemies and the only one to have truly defeated and taken the Last City... has returned. Pulled from another time by Maya Sundaresh in a desperate play to take the Plaguelands and any tech she finds inside for herself. To bring back a golden age for humanity, she seeks the very enemy who delved us into our darkest time in recent memory?"
Ikora Rey

Ghau'ul, Emperor of the New Golden Age is the Ghaul from the timeline Maya Sundaresh pulled her Red Legion subjects from. He would go on to find a way to subvert her control and attempt once more to march on the Last City.

Biography[edit]

"Your timeline's iteration of me, "Ghaul" as he preferred to go by I am told, was a fool. He knew not how to truly be a Dominus. He desired approval, validation, whether from Lao'ago, Princess Caiatl, or Traveler. Know I do not make such mistakes, Guardian. I crushed your Ghost with my bare hands and make you watch, then slowly pushed the life out of you under my boot. Then that pitiful roach of a Consul, then all others who stood in my way, including your Traveler. The Light was mine and my Red Legion's far before The Conductor found us, and now the Darkness as well. This time, you will see no mercy, Guardian. You will not escape again!"
— Ghau'ul, Emperor of the New Golden Age

In this timeline, a more ruthless and tyrannical Ghau'ul had successfully captured the Traveler and killed the Guardian, then Humanity, the rest of the Guardians, and most of the Solar System's forces beyond any meaningful opposition to the Cabal Empire outside of holdouts and small rebellions.

After Maya Sundaresh took Ghau'ul, she bestowed the power of Prismatic upon him and his most elite personnel with the promise he'd rule the Golden Age she sought to create. Of course Ghau'ul knew this was a lie, not to mention the imprint of Te'Qal within the Echo of Command confirming this hypothesis behind Maya's back during the subjugating process. From there Ghau'ul would lead the Red Legion into the Plaguelands in search for SIVA and tech for Maya's plans. After the death of Valus Thuun, Ghau'ul would slowly begin preparations to defy Maya, with Kargen, the Technocrat using his time searching the Vex Network for paths to subjugate more Vex to also find a weakness in the Echo of Command's powers.

Eventually Kargen would find a weakness and tune the Legion's Light-suppressing tech, along with getting Darkness-suppressing tech thanks to a band of Shadow Legion deserters who gave them technology to create Suppressor-like tech. Combined together, while Maya and Te'Qal fought, Ghau'ul would have Kargen activate the tech and free him and his most trusted and powerful deployments from Maya's control. Ghau'ul would take this deployment, along with several pieces of Vex tech and march on the Plaguelands in force towards the Last City. The Guardian would meet Ghau'ul and his triumvirate of himself, C'aiatl, Princess of the Stars, and Thumos, the Unbroken atop Felwinter Peak which they meant to make into a beachhead. After Empress Caiatl killed C'aiatl and the Guardian killed Thumos, they would together defeat Ghau'ul and he would once again be returned to memory.

Gameplay[edit]

"C'aiatl."
"Ghaul."
"In my time you stood by my side. Seeing as you had... hang ups... about her, I now offer such a throne to you. As the Princess of Stars, the most powerful Cabal to have ever lived."
"Your words are as mighty as ever, Ghaul. Mightier than even your blade. But I will not give up the future I have fought to carve for a past I ran away from. But you change make your own fate. Join the Coalition with me, Ghaul."
"... Then die ashamed.
"
— Emperor Ghau'ul and Empress Caiatl

Phase 1[edit]

Ghau'ul's fight is split into two phases, with the first having him fight akin to his original fight in Chosen, however with three new moves and no cooldown between transformations. Stasis Confinement has Ghau'ul form massive Stasis spikes around his left leg and he flies down to the ground at an enemy, freezing all hit by it and creating a massive Stasis barrier around him wherever he lands. Ghau'ul will then shatter the barrier by transforming into a new form, which deals high damage to all hit by the shatter. Strand Rend causes Ghau'ul to land with force and explode with Strand, with long whips out of his fingers. He will then lash these at his foes before ending the form with a loud roar which causes the Strand whips to lash around him and deal heavy damage. Anyone hit by these whips get the Unraveled debuff, with the final AOE attack suspending those hit by it, forcing them to not only get hit by the remainder of the attack, but be opened up to another one if not broken free in time. And lastly is Prismatic Absolution, which causes Ghau'ul's brand to begin flaring Prismatic all around him as he cries out in pain before his pauldrons open up and release a Prismatic Quake missile barrage with each missile having a random element attached to it. Arc jolting, Solar scorching, Void making volatile, Strand slowing, Stasis suspending, Kinetic just doing damage, and Prismatic draining ability charge.

Cutscene - As He Made Me[edit]

After defeating Ghau'ul, he falls to the ground with the brand of command dispersing from his neck. Caiatl exhales and walks up to Ghaul "It's over, Ghaul. Do not make the mistake you did here again." She sounds almost desperate "No one else has to die. Come with me, we can make a better future for the Cabal together."
"You are no Cabal, 'Caiatl'." He says mockingly "Your alliance with the Humans have made you soft. You've forgotten what's made you Cabal. You drink not the seas, you eat not the mountains. You scavenge for scraps at their dinner table like the skittering Fallen!"
Caiatl thinks upon Ghau'ul's words "... You are more than what Calus or your Consul made you, Ghaul."
Ghau'ul stands on his feet "No, Empress." he says, sounding almost resigned "That truly was all I was." Ghaul says with a steeled expression and a Severus in hand as he throws a Suppressor into the sky which activates and floats above them all. "No more running!" He roars

Phase 2[edit]

In phase 2 Ghau'ul has lost his Paracausal abilities and relies on his Severus and various other technology, along with no longer being able to summon reinforcements. However, all Guardians also have all their abilities except for their double jump and health regeneration suppressed as well. Ghau'ul mostly attempts to get in close for a melee attack with his Severus, but will also launch Quake missiles out of his shoulder paulrons when at range as well. These missiles are much like the ones launched by Colossi in Destiny 1 where they do not split into smaller ones and do not slow and blind, but have far higher damage. Every third of his health, Ghau'ul will become immune and charge the Guardian, grabbing them by the neck and living them up in preparation to stab them in the heart with his Severus. However Caiatl will intervene by hitting him away and stunning him with her Hammer of Proving. She then goes behind Ghau'ul and traps him with the hilt of the hammer, opening him up for more damage until Ghau'ul breaks free and returns to the fight.

Upon his health being drained, grabbing the Guardian, and Caiatl hitting him away again, he will not get up from Caiatl's hit, ending the fight.

Cutscene - Filled With Salt[edit]

Ghau'ul lays out on the snow, armor broken and breathing labored. Caiatl again walks up to Ghau'ul and stares down at him, remorse in her eyes. Ghau'ul manages to turn himself over and lay on his back while propped up by his elbows, looking back at Caiatl. The two share a moment together before she picks up her Hammer of Proving and raises it above her head with both hands. With Caiatl's yell of anger and frustration, there's a loud shattering of armor, then nothing but measured deep breaths from her and the howling winds.
