Shadows of the Night is the second story mission of the first part of the Paradox expansion's storyline. While the Vanguard debates on the emergence of a hitherto unknown Cabal Legion on Earth itself, The Guardian is directed to Deimos by the Exo Stranger, where they discover the first of the Eclipse-based subclasses: Fusion.

Fade in to a view of the twin Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, and the gaping hole left by Mars's absence. Piloting their ship, the Guardian arrives within the local orbit of Deimos.

Commander Zavala: The discovery of these mysterious beings we now call the "Shadowkeepers" and their connection to the Darkness is a breakthrough. Eris Morn is working with Ikora Rey and Osiris to form a plan to address this, and I believe they will see this through. In the meantime, the Hidden and Variks are investigating the activities of the Cabal. The loss of their planet, Mars to the Black Fleet is worrisome. More intelligence is required.

Ghost: Zavala, what exactly does this have to do with what's happened on Earth?

Zavala: We don't know much, but I can tell you that your encounter with Eobard Thawne was just the beginning of what's about to be a major battle. Rendezvous with the Stranger and find out what's going on, Guardian. We cannot allow this threat to compromise our safety and spread any further.

The camera fades in and pans down to the Aerodrome, where the Guardian previously escaped. The area is completely silent, and now overrun with Shadowkeepers. Dead Guardians blanket the field. A perspective view shows the members and followers of The Shadowkeepers—resurrected villains from the past—all gathering around the portal. Large black flames hove into view as The White Angel prepares for her partner's return. The Black Swordsman walks over to his allies, surveying the scene. All of them kneel to the floor in reverence.

Phoenixaro Uchihamaki: Welcome home, my King.

The Swordsman sneers down at the newly Shadowkeeper life forms. A Lord Shadowkeeper demonstrates his ability by splitting into two copies of himself, still kneeling. A Cherubic Shadowkeeper lowers her head.

The Black Swordsman: Finally... at long last... After 7 centuries, I am finally free.

Malcolm Merlyn: We've been waiting a long time for your return, Kirito, but I think you'll be surprised to find out that Eobard and Morgana had already lost their lives in the process.

Kirito: Not quite, Malcolm. With technology like this, anything is possible.

Malcolm Merlyn smirks as Eobard and Morgana approach near Kirito, looking over as their apparent corpses reveal themselves to be, in fact, the dead bodies of Lightbearers.

Eobard Thawne: I see you've pulled out a trick on our enemies, Kirito.

Morgana le Fay: If I didn't know any better, I'd say that you've managed to have the Guardians do our work for us.

Kirito smirks as he walks towards the audience.

Kirito: The Guardians... they think that they can kill us so easily and destroy everything we've built, but eventually, they'll come to understand that the Darkness can't be destroyed.

Sasuke Uchiha: And how do you know that?

Kirito: The Darkness showed me the truth about how the universe had fallen prey to the corrupt and the greedy with selfish needs ever since the Traveler arrived... and about how we can rewrite not only reality, but also history... all so that we can save our people and usher in a new era. A better world.
