"Oryx's festering extragalactic cult. The Spite of the King was once a simple skirmishing faction meant to start and dictate the pace of wars. But now without their King and the new purpose found by their Queen, they've become an unreadable foe. What will they do next? What is their aim beyond our immediate destruction? Only time can tell..."
Eris Morn

The Spite of the King is a Hive brood led by Kharyx, the Navigator's Lullaby, who was Oryx, the Taken King's mate. Originally called the Claw of Oryx, the Spite of the King brood served as his initial skirmishers during a war, along with usually being who he left to clean up the remains of a race after a war's end. However, after Oryx turned his focus to the Sol system with his various broods, the Claw of Oryx was left in the care of his mate to continue a long running war against a persistent species existing on another plane of reality known as the Gravity Shadow.

Once Oryx was murdered and the broods of Sol began to crumble, Kharyx took charge and led the Claw of Oryx to Sol to continue the war in her king's name and to set the heretical broods straight. However upon Rhulk, Disciple of the Witness, Nezarec, Final God of Pain, Calus, the Disciple, and even The Witness' defeats, Kharyx and her broods were left ruined and without morale. That was until a strange mote of Light and Dark found itself residing within Kharyx, who would use its boundless power to find the strength to once again begin her vengeance.

The Hive of the Spite of the King are dominantly brown with light grey skin with green cloth. Their Soulfire is far more yellow in accent and some of their weaponry and magic has Prismatic infused into it thanks to the Echo Kharyx possesses. They also tend to wear more accessories than most broods, with Knights wearing capes, Acolytes wearing tattered cloaks, and Wizards wearing talismans. Along with having more spikes and curved horns than many of their other broods, though not nearly as spikey as the Hidden Swarm.

History[edit]

Claw of Oryx[edit]

When the brood was first created during the battle against the Ecumene, where they served as a way for Oryx to skirmish with the Ecumene and test his newfound power after his slaughter of Akka, the Worm of Secrets. The Claw of Oryx where among the first Taken. A Claw of Oryx Knight, Daurthoth, was even the first Taken he ever successfully took. The Claw of Oryx would continue to serve their king as both Hive and Taken, they alongside the Blood of Oryx would be instrumental in wiping out the remaining pockets of Ecumene and their other client species after the Taken wiped out the Dakaua Nest.

A King's Rage[edit]

The knowledge shook the Claw of Oryx to its core, Crota, Son of Oryx, their god's favored and mightiest spawn, was dead. Oryx would leave Kharyx in charge of the Claw of Oryx to continue the war against a weak but persistent race called the Gravity Shadow and would take his Dreadnaught to sol to avenge his son. Kharyx would continue to lead the Claw of Oryx dutifully. And while they'd suffer a major impact in speed and strength thanks to Oryx's absence and Kharyx inexperience, the brood's champion known as the High War's Herald would assist the queen as an advisor and close confidant and together would continue the war.

A Queen's Rally[edit]

Once the Gravity Shadow was successfully exterminated, Kharyx would quickly rally them all to march on Sol, their king was dead and the broods of Sol were spitting on his grave in heresy. However as they approached Sol, loss after loss would cause unrest within the now named Spite of the King brood. Their true master was dead and its Disciples were as well. The brood would wait just outside of Sol, languishing and withering away. Rebellions and coups would spread across the fleet, war would break out and extinction was certain. That was until an Echo would pierce through the fleet and land itself inside Kharyx's heart, empowering her. Kharyx would quell the rebellions, rally her brood once more, and march upon Sol.

Omens of Vengeance[edit]

The Spite of the King would begin to be spotted in locations with high concentrations of Light such as The Court of Savathûn, The Pale Heart, and even small scouting ships have been seen in the European Dead Zone near the Shard of the Traveler. All of the deployments' leaders possessed potent use of Prismatic, leading Ikora Rey to presume that whoever led this new sect of Hive had an Echo. Skirmishes would continue across the solar system as The Hidden sought more information on what this brood was and who could be leading it.

A Tricky Deal[edit]

In exchange for the Echo of Vengeance (once acquired) and helping her protect her Throne World, Savathûn, the Witch Queen would reveal that the leader was most likely Kharyx, Oryx's mate and vindictive queen of the Hive. Savathûn would refer to Kharyx as childish, brazen, and extremely naïve for how ancient she was. Savathûn would also describe how normally the Spite of the King was Oryx's weakest sect and should not be as powerful as it was, even with the Echo and Prismatic in their hands.

With a quick mission alongside the Witch Queen, The Guardian would find out that this was because Kharyx was bolstering her forces with Xivu Arath, God of War's and using her throne world, the Black Terrace, as a staging ground. Savathûn would humor perhaps Xivu Arath would agree to an "allegiance" like she has to help get rid of Kharyx and free her broods.

An Ongoing War[edit]

The Spite of the King continue to be a powerful foe for all they face. However every day that goes by they and Kharyx grows in power, but so does The Coalition's knowledge on them. Some day, a final play will be made and either all the Echoes will be taken by Kharyx and The Traveler is destroyed, or Kharyx and her brood falls and the Echo of Vengeance is silenced.
