A Painsmith is an extremely rare rank taken on by several Hive in hopes of becoming weapons manufacturers for the rest of their brood.

The life of an aspiring Painsmith is among the most ruthless within the Hive. Painsmiths must constantly seek deeper and more depraved ways to bend the Darkness to their will in order to create enough destruction to satiate their worm. Unlike all other Hive who take what's needed to feed their Worm and tithe the extra to the Ascendant Hive they serve, Painsmith tithing is reversed. They have a minimum they need to tithe and get to keep the remainder. This is to promote as much destruction as possible as if one creates enough, their power will skyrocket will all the spare devastation they possess. But if they're too weak, the mandatory tithing will consume them. Another step taken to filter out weaker Painsmiths is that they must tithe amongst each other too. In order to not further strain the already starving Painsmith, often they resort to killing each other to lower the amount of tithing needed, leaving only the strongest in both creativity and strength to survive.
Any morph above a Thrall can become a Painsmith and as such it's most commonly claimed by Acolytes. Though in one case, even a Scorn took the title of Painsmith, that being Ksimikaa the Painsmith. Ksimikaa was a student under Hiraks, the Mindbender and learned much of the Hive under his tutelage. By the time they came to serve Rhulk, Disciple of the Witness within Savathûn's Throne World, they had become so far the only known Painsmith of the Scorn. They'd prove invaluable within the Scorn's establishment within the Throne World until their death during an Ether Ritual.
The Lucent Brood has also formed a new variant of Painsmiths known as Lightsmiths who function similarly but using the Light instead of Darkness.
