- "Glorious glorious... I see the infinite... the black edge that all of life and death shall fall upon... And I am its wielder... The Witness... My Witness... Let me wield you and carve away all of existence until only you and I remain... Only then shall I turn you upon myself... I reserve the right to be last... And last you shall make me..."
- — Emperor Calus, the Blind Idiot God
Emperor Calus, the Blind Idiot God is a version of Emperor Calus following his induction as a Disciple. However unlike in the current timeline, in this universe the power granted to Calus is far different, as such the story and Calus's madness develops in a far different direction.
Gameplay[edit]
Calus is encountered as the last boss of the final mission of the Lightfall Redux campaign, Dreams.
Phase 1, Awakening the God of Folly[edit]
The first encounter starts with meeting Calus sitting upon his throne. Calus is initially in a trance-like state, drooling endless gold from his mouth and despite him being incapacitated with his dreams, his dead purple-pink eyes still follow the Guardian. In order to awaken Calus, The Guardian must explore the arena and find six Councilor Psions named Old Ones who sing to keep Calus in his trance state. These being Sollotec, Yatotet, Alfmani, Vloren, Enmefi, and Yaolotec. Upon each being silenced, Calus will roar louder and the text "The Folly God's roar calls his subjects to his singers' aid" will appear and Shadow Legion Cabal will enter to reinforce the other Old Ones. Once all six Old Ones are killed, Calus' roar will boom across the battlefield, causing all Shadow Legion to retreat to his throne and the text "Embrace the End..." will appear.
Phase 2, Throne of Penance[edit]
- "Life... Dreams... Where do they come from...? Why do they experience us...? Why do we seek them...? I shall destroy them all!"
- — Emperor Calus, the Blind Idiot God
Upon Calus awakening he says his opening quote, then upon finishing the encounter begins as Shadow Legion pour into the throne room. Calus begins the fight staying on his throne and firing his Transcendent Gaze attack at his enemies which functions similar to his old Emperor's Gaze attack except with Void properties instead of Solar. If one gets too close, he'll cast Emperor's Dejection which has him angrily swish his chalice in front of him, causing Royal Wine to spill out and cause a massive explosion and knock back everyone in his immediate vicinity, if not outright killing them. He can also drink from this chalice and belch out a Solar attack of cosmic fire called Devoured Dreams. This attack covers a large area and suppresses abilities, while also slowing anyone hit by it. In order for this attack to be disabled and Calus to be vulnerable, one must shoot his chalice enough to drain it of liquid. Upon being emptied, Calus will look into the empty chalice before snapping his fingers as the text "Come forth and face penance, Loyalists..." appears. This summons several Loyalist Ceremonial Bathers named Folly God's Enchained who begin charging the Throne of Penance. If they manage to reach the throne, they begin attacking Calus, who's eyes then flash a bright pinkish-purple, instantly destroying the Gladiators and transforming them into more Royal Wine. During this time Calus is vulnerable to damage and this damage phase can be lengthened by killing the Folly God's Enchained, but each subsequent wave has more and more durability, going from Elites to Majors, to Ultras and each subsequent wave of Ultras having double the health as the last wave. Once five Gladiators reach Calus and are destroyed, Calus will drink the chalice and become invincible again.
During damage phase, scale drones rapidly spawn from his shoulder pauldrons and track down Guardians. These function the same as the ones spawned by The Caretaker in behavior and damage. Once Calus reaches critical health, the text "I will burn it all away..." appears as Calus raises his hands drunkenly, causing the sun behind the battlefield to begin intensifying and damage everyone on the battlefield except for Calus in an attack called Pulsar Indomitous. The Guardian must grab the Hammer of Proving Empress Caiatl transmats in and slam it on Calus's head, ending the encounter.
Cutscene - Wrath of the Fool[edit]
Calus's helmet shatters, revealing the man underneath, mutated and distorted by strange apparati and Darkness veins coursing down the back of his head with one bright pinkish-purple eye that starlight floats out of like a flame. His teeth are mutli-colored and gilded with vascular-like veins of Darkness in his mouth. He growls, rolling his neck as he stands up off of his throne, the thing shattering into thousands of small pieces as he exhales, the sun behind him visibly reacting too. "Tenacious..." he says, clearly not in his right mind as his left normal eye seems unfocused and even dead with no color or life behind it, meanwhile his transformed right one is focused directly on the Guardian, beady and intense to the point of shaking "I have always liked that about you Guardians..." his head rolls back and around as if he is attempting to keep it straight up. "But..." he sighs looking drunkenly down at his hand "The Final Shape is near... and I cannot afford to disappoint my Witness any more..." he clenches his hand as his head darkens to black with the cosmos shining within, his left eye now matching his right "Embrace the end!" he roars as he does the sumo clap, destroying the terrain from the shockwave and knocking down the Guardian who gets up just in time to look up at Calus's manic beastly smile.
Phase 3, The Blind Idiot God[edit]
In phase 3, Calus slowly walks around the arena, occasionally teleporting with Resonance and leaving behind Scale Drones to track down his foes. During the entire fight Calus's chalice is overflowing with gold and Royal Wine, causing a damaging field called Supernova Remnant to appear around him at all times. This remnant tracks behind wherever he walks and stays present for thirty seconds after he leaves the area. He still mainly attacks with Transcendent Gaze, drink from his chalice and use Devoured Dreams, and will use Emperor's Dejection when a Guardian gets close. He can also intentionally thrash his chalice in front of him, using Avaricious Nebulae which will spill Supernova Remnant in front of him that rapidly spreads in a line in front of him. This line climbs up walls and covers all terrain in his path, no matter how high. The sweep he does with his chalice can also damage and send a target flying.
Calus is able to plant his feet and charge up a massive attack, his cape billowing as he charges. Once it is charged, he will fire a massive laser beam from his mouth called Kugelblitz which will instantly kill all who are hit by it, enemy and ally alike. His face can also alight with more and more galaxies as he holds it in pain before growling loudly then releasing a roar and causing a massive explosion of stars and galaxies around him and many areas around the arena in an attack called Heat Death. He can also take a stance before roaring to the sky and firing dozens of Scale Drones. During this fight he is also accompanied by his Shadow Legion forces.
Upon his health finally being depleted once more, Calus weakly stands back up and begins to cast Pulsar Indomitous again, but this time the Guardian has to shoot him in his eyes to shatter the cosmic aura around his face, then finally the Darkness vascular system along the back of his head. Once this is done Calus is engulfed in golden Resonance and Darkness muck, calling out "Cemaili...!" before exploding into a Darkness vascular tree much like Rhulk, Disciple of the Witness, but this one is gilded in gemstones and dripping gold. With Calus's chalice forever gripped in his hand lifted to the stars, now endlessly leaking Darkness muck akin to the wall the Witness emerged from in Its first appearance unlike the Royal Wine it seemed to be while he was alive.
Phase 4, A Dead Thing Made By a Dead Power in the Shape of the Dead[edit]
A time after The Guardian leaves the damaged Typhon Imperator to seize The Veil, leaving Calus' body in the care of Empress Caiatl, she will alert the Guardian in a frightened tone and clearly injured that Calus has resurrected, pulling himself off and out of his tree and is rapidly approaching their location. At the same time as her warning, massive earthquakes, explosions, and feral growling can be heard. Just then Calus breaks down a wall in front of the Guardian, feral and manic, both eyes now looking the same as his left eye did before phase 3, looking dead, unfocused, and glossed over. His head also limply dangling towards the floor. His chest clearly having a massive gash where the tree pierced him which has been "patched" up by Darkness muck which leaks from the wound. Ghost will yell, telling you to "Run!" as Calus howls and begins desperately clawing and crawling after the Guardian as they run and fall through the facility to find the Veil. If he ever catches up, he will use his Resonant Severi named Resonant Sun to instantly kill whoever is hit by it. Dealing enough damage to Calus can briefly stun him, but if damaged too much in too short of a time he will howl loudly and rapidly run towards his target for a brief few seconds.
Cutscene - I Feel Cold...[edit]
Once the Guardian reaches the Veil containment, they will seal the door as they trip and fall onto their back, pointing a revolver they found on the floor at the door. The door smashes open and Calus begins to crawl in, feral and growling like an animal before suddenly, he stops. Calus's dead eyes meet with the gun and the Guardian's shaking hand. Suddenly, his body freezes and seemingly all life within fades as his body loses all color, except for the Darkness muck slowly leaking from his corpse. "He wasn't alive, was he?" the Guardian asks. "No." Caiatl responds, walking in, holding her stomach and with a damaged tusk. She then helps the Guardian up "You slew Calus aboard the Thyphon Imperator. But this Voice in the Dark, It resurrected his corpse with that vile muck It tricked him into drinking. Though... I don't know why he stopped here." Ghost then chimes in "Before he went still, his eyes met the Guardian's for a second. I wonder if some of Calus was still in there, seeing what the Witness was doing to him, free of his addled mind. He then chose to die and deny the Witness the puppet he became." "If true, he didn't choose a Cabal's end, but he chose at least some kind of redemption." Caiatl sighs "It's at least peace..."
As Caiatl and the Guardian begin to ready to leave, the muck on the ground leaking from Calus' corpse begins to gather before suddenly shooting out and grabbing Ghost as he is once again possessed by the Witness. He then is quickly flown up toward the Veil. The Guardian attempts to use Strand to pull Ghost out of the muck, but the Strands break and decay the second they touch it. Ghost links with the Veil and the end proceeds as it originally did, except with everyone confused at what was done to The Traveler, but all believing it to be killed.
Trivia and Behind the Scenes[edit]
- This idea was inspired by not only how disappointing Calus, the Disciple's boss fight was (as was Lightfall as a whole) for me, but also how awesome and wasted his concept art for this form and his fight was. I believed Calus deserved an awesome drunken god-esc fight inspired by space and Azathoth from the Lovecraftian mythos. Along with leaning into his opulent emperor god complex persona hiding his feral beast self underneath. I think hearing Calus crash through the Veil's containment was an awesome hint at his more beastly side, but I felt his Gladiator form just didn't satisfy me for how much Caiatl built that side of him up.
- This concept took over two years to finalize into this form. A lot of hours of off and on writing and brainstorming. I thought of drawing something for this but I think the concept art speaks to this idea way better than anything I could draw for it.
- If you wish to see more of this concept, please look at Calus, the Disciple's concept art on both Gabo Garza's and Tobias Kwan's Artstations. They're what inspired this idea, after all.
