Lore[edit]
Where the enemy can go, so can my army.
Dawn breaks, and the snow ceases. The Fallen's onslaught has persisted through the night. Deweng peers out from the trench's observation hole. The nearest artillery position ceased radio communications fifteen minutes ago. Everyone knows what has happened, but no one utters a word. They're all clinging to the hope that Deweng will come through with some good news.
Straining his eyes, Deweng focuses on the silent position three hundred meters away.
Half-jokingly, he wonders if he could glare the Fallen invaders right out of existence.
But in a flash, a dark green tarp and a mess of ammo box fragments are hurled up high, followed by a muffled explosion. Instinctively, he flinches, and after three or four seconds, black smoke begins to climb into the sky, like the fist of a dying giant, swinging defiantly at the heavens.
Still, no one speaks. Everyone heard that blast clear as day. It was the last position that had been firing outside the central tunnel for the last eight hours. Now, they are alone.
"Wangdui says Lady Xuân Yến took the Lightbearer and bailed," someone says, breaking the silence.
"Wangdui's a lily-livered chicken! His crew's been itching to ditch their post!" comes a retort from deep in the tunnel, the anger setting off a coughing fit. Deweng looks inside, where a soldier with an amputated left leg should be sitting, but the emergency lights in the tunnel ran out of charge the night before. All he sees is darkness.
"Captain, what do we do now?" The dreadful question hangs in the dusty air.
Regular vibrations come from the rock wall. The sentry guarding the tunnel entrance grips his weapon, glancing first outside, then at Deweng. His throat was pierced by a Fallen bullet two days prior. His breath comes through it in faint hisses. He gestures to Deweng, palm down with fingers spread, signaling that the House of Devils' Walkers are approaching the central tunnel along the trench.
"I'll stay." Deweng nods at the sentry. "The rest of you, decide for yourselves." He lowers his head and gets to work dismantling the machine guns mounted on the other two firing holes. "Those of you who want to stick around, form groups of three. Our goal is to take down their remaining Walkers. We can't let those scrapheaps get close to Jiangshi Metro." The radio operator takes off his comms pack, silently joining Deweng in dismantling the machine guns. They're joined by two more soldiers who bring rocket launchers and ammunition out of the shelter.
More people join the silent ranks, gathering bullets and weapons. The soldier with the amputated leg snatches a directional mine from someone's grip. He straps it to his chest with bandages, then, with great effort, sits up against the tunnel's reinforcement column. "I'm not going anywhere, Captain."
Then, silence again. A soldier quietly approaches and places a frag grenade in his hand, patting his shoulder.
Deweng now stands at the tunnel exit. He surveys his surroundings, yet finds himself unable to recognize a single face—they've all blurred into one. Clearing his throat, he says, "Those of you who make it back to Jiangshi Metro…promise me you'll tell them what happened here."
Someone starts to cry. The Walkers grow louder. It's time.
Deweng draws his hand cannon, nodding at his surrounding warriors. "Comrades, it has been an honor fighting alongside you."
