Lore[edit]
Retrieval Record 0019: 215th Solar Day — Red Sea Desert, Earth (Only blueprint retrieved)
Ark crawls behind a low sand dune. The beads of sweat on his forehead crystallize into gray salt particles beneath the scorching sun as he stares at Errol through his telescope. He has a clear view of the ex-Corsair hanging upside down from a crane arm, eyes shut, silent.
"This plan's even dumber than the last…" Duty looks up to the sky. He slowly scoots himself across the ground towards Ark. "Kidnapping the friend of a crack shot to threaten her into handing over her weapon—three times, no less!" He shakes his head in self deprecation. "I swear, if it weren't for her letting us go, we'd already be dead three times over."
Ark's face turns red as if he wants to retort, but knows Dury's right— that Lightbearer named Marin is a much better shot than either of them. He grips the crane jib's controller tighter. His sweat has already soaked the metal casing.
It's absurd how they've ended up in this situation. Anger wells in his heart. I'm sorry. You may have more skill and muscle than the two of us combined, but we need that weapon—really need it. So we've got no choice but to play dirty.
"There she is!" Dury suddenly kicks him. At some point, he pulled out a telescope, too. Ark looks in the direction he's pointing. Sure enough, there's Marin. But to his surprise, this time she's got both hands raised and no weapons. She approaches the dune as if she knows exactly where he and Dury are hiding.
"Hey, you couple of shameless fools!" She seems both joking and serious. "Stop torturing Errol, you hear?"
"What took you so long?!" the hanging man vents. "You waited on purpose, didn't you?!"
Ark's palm is so wet he nearly loses his grip on the controller. He feigns calmness and stands up to wave it at Marin, then hides it behind his back. "I'm not joking with you this time, Ms. Marin," he says. "Your friend doesn't have a Ghost to bring him back. So hand over the bow, or he falls."
Dury slowly moves toward Marin's flank in an attempt to find an advantageous position, but Marin's sidelong glance has him freezing in terror.
"You can't take the bow." She looks back at Ark and speaks with absolute resolve. "But you can have this."
Marin tossed a disk wrapped in transparent hydrophobic material onto the ground. Ark hesitated for a second, but as if reading his thoughts, Marin nudges the disk closer with her foot. "It's the blueprint. The rest is up to you."
Ark meets Dury's glance, then picks up the disk. His Ghost makes a timely appearance and begins to scan it to ensure its data's integrity.
An awkward yet relieved atmosphere overtakes the three of them.
"Glad we could finally come to an agreement" the still-hanging Errol shouts as he struggles in his bindings. "Now, could you kindly let me down?!"
