Retrieval Record 0006: 199th Solar Day — Sunchales, Corrientes, South America

"You're sure her grave's here?" Su Qin looks around—nothing but sand as far as the eye can see. "Strange… How could it be in a desert?"

"Well, it's a whole different world. We should count ourselves lucky." Adam removes his breathing valve and hood. "At least it's not the deep sea…or lava."

Adam's Ghost sways and emerges from his cloak. He gets closer to the sand and scans it, marking a set of coordinates 2.6 meters below sea level and displaying it on the screens in everyone's helmets.

"How can we be certain this timeline's Chaperone was buried with Nora Jericho, Captain?" Su Qin asks. "Besides, what if Amanda beat us to it?"

"Really, Su? You wanna give me a quantum physics course now?" Adam motions for his Ghost to withdraw. "We're here to carry out a mission. Don't ask so many science-y questions."

"You can just admit you don't know a thing about parallel universes, Captain." Su Qin rolls his eyes behind Adam. "True science requires the courage to face one's mistakes."

"What, and you understand it?" Adam can practically feel the disdain boring into his helmet.

"Everyone is here because they volunteered for Project Clotho. And even if you wanted to back out, it's too late for that. We can't go anywhere without that gun."

"Enough, gentlemen." Blanco pulls out a foldable shovel and strikes an exaggerated pose with it. "I told you this would come in handy." Pleased with himself, he sticks the shovel into the sand and begins digging. "Come on. Time's a-wastin', and we've got a mission to finish." The three of them dig for twenty minutes until finally, there's a thud. Blanco's shovel has struck something hard.

"Oi, look here."

Blanco takes off his helmet, revealing eyes beaming with delight.

Adam is silent. He pats the sand from his gloves, then places his right hand on his chest and whispers a prayer. Then he bends down and lifts the lid of the coffin.

The other two rush over, sending dust and sand through the air. Two mummified bodies—one big and one small—are lying in the coffin with a rust-coated shotgun between them.

The three fall silent. Eventually, Adam speaks. "Guess luck wasn't on Amanda's side."

He carefully lifts the gun out, gives it to Su Qin, then returns the lid to its rightful place, slowly but with some force. Arc sparks jump across his palms, and his hands slide steadily along the edges of the iron coffin. The newly welded edges are crimson when he pulls back.

He repeats his prayer in a hushed whisper. "Forgive me. Help me. Guide me."
