A Cryptarch, or "Crypto-archaeologist" is the designation for an individual who studies the properties of encoded matter, known as Engrams. These individuals can unlock the patterns stored within Engrams, allowing for the item encoded within the pattern to be spontaneously created in a process known as "decoding". Certain Engrams are encrypted and may require the Cryptarch to attain a certain rank before he can decode them.

The Cryptarch encountered by players in Destiny is named Master Rahool and is located within the Tower's plaza.[1] Besides selling and decoding engrams, the cryptarch will also buy any House Banners the player is carrying.

Reputation

The Cryptarch's Rank and Reputation can be seen to the left of the Cryptarch.

Reputation is the Cryptarch's skill in identifying, decrypting and decoding Engrams brought in by Guardians. It is built with the Cryptarch by either buying Engrams from him (which he then decodes) or by providing him with Engrams to decode, which are found during the Guardian's travels. As a Guardian decodes more Engrams his/her Reputation increases. This is represented by a circular meter which surrounds the Crypto-archaeology symbol located to the left of the Cryptarch symbol on his inventory screen. Each time this meter fills completely, the Cryptarch's Rank increases by 1. The higher the number, the greater the Cryptarch's skill at unlocking any Encrypted Engrams the player brings to him. Although, regardless of skill level, the Cryptarch will always be a fat loser whose meddling with your hard-earned items will likely produce tears of sadness and severe depression. Certain Encrypted Engrams require the Cryptarch to be of a particular rank before they can be decrypted and decoded.[1]
