Lead biophysicist within the Plaguelands |
- "A Psion biophysicist loyal to Empress Caiatl."
- — In-game description
The Research Optus is a Psion Optus tasked with working with the Guardian within the Plaguelands to find out Maya Sundaresh's plans and why she is so focused on such a location. They can be encountered every time one clears an area during Reclaim missions and can be talked to up to twenty times, afterwards they disappear and do not spawn any more.
Biography[edit]
The Research Optus is first and can be repeatedly encountered upon the completion of a sector in the Reclaim missions. Through each conversation had with the Research Optus, while initially standoffish and purely professional, the Research Optus quickly warms up to the Guardian. Though this kinship quickly turns to distrust as the Psion feels they are just being used as a means to an end. Through repeated talks with the Psion, this paranoia is dispelled. However, this paranoia is replaced with a more physical issue as the Psion is repeatedly injured in their pursuits and Psionic powers can only heal so much, yet they are resolute it doesn't matter and that they are expendable.
The Optus eventually comes to the conclusion that Maya Sundaresh will use a Warsat satellite to broadcast her reach across a vast distance, bringing far more under her command than her current reach allows. After this, albeit not proven, conclusion, the Research Optus sees a cloudy vision of Torobatl, the homeworld of the Cabal that fell to Xivu Arath, God of War and her brood. They come to the conclusion they must depart for the planet for an unknown reason to the Guardian. They say their farewell, saying they treasured the Guardian's companionship, and hopes they will cross paths again someday.
Personality and Traits[edit]
The Research Optus is often very task-focused and prefers short and to-the-point conversations, seeming to not be one who likes to dawdle. They also seem open to friendship, yet seem distrusting by nature, requiring a firm and repeated companionship to begin opening up. They are a firm believer of the militant culture of the Cabal, seeing themself as expendable and seeming to not have any issue with their placement in the Imperial Cabal's hierarchy.
The Optus has a very dry sense of conversation, making it hard to tell what they are currently feeling without reading their body language, which they often fail at hiding. They seem to not want to worry the Guardian as after they're injured they begin to repeatedly force themselves to seem okay and even rushing their Psionic healing process to seem in better health to their companion. Though despite these mannerisms, they are very compassionate and determined, finding their goals more important than even their life or health, along with quickly gaining a close and trusting bond with the Guardian.
Conversations Transcript[edit]
- Research Optus: Maya Sundaresh, where is she now? Come speak with me, if time will allow.
- Psionic Vision [Maya searches across the deserted plain. A hidden facility comes into view, its architectural structure changing every time she takes a step.]
- Research Optus: She could be here, but she is not. Warsat materials are her last shot.
I can tell you more of what you seek. With extra Glimmer, I will speak.
They await payment, and are disappointed.

I am not ready for you yet, Guardian.

I found her pursuing the Golden Age tech. I… Can you understand me without rhymes or rhythms?
They grip their side.
- Research Optus:
A Psionic blast explodes in reverse, unbreaking a set of ribs.

Upon approaching, the Psion keels over, holding their abdomen. Perhaps they aren't healing as well as you'd thought.
- Research Optus:
You forget I'm expendable. I was born to be wounded.
You reach down, letting the Optus steady themself on your arm. They grab your shoulder for balance as they stand up straight again.
- Research Optus:
Guardian, I…
They avoid your gaze.
- Research Optus:
The Psion stands before you, legs shaking. Upon your arrival, they attempt to steady them.

Trivia[edit]
- The Research Optus is the first Psion the player character communicates with.
- The Optus' story only continues when the player talks with them. As such if the player wishes to keep the Optus around and not have them despawn after twenty interactions, they can simply stop or never interact with them.
- The Optus' conversation progress and status also carries over across all characters, including their despawning.
Appearance[edit]
