"Prove yourself worthy, and I will grant you the means to true power."
— Emperor Calus

Emperor Calus is the former Emperor of the Cabal Empire, who was usurped by Dominus Ghaul many years prior to the Red War.

Biography

"For centuries, I led the revels of my empire, and the stars themselves burnt sweet and clear. But in time the jealous and the tight-fisted rose up and sent me into exile."
— Emperor Calus

Thousands of years prior to Destiny, Calus ejected the military aristocracy known as the Praetorate from power. One of their members, The Consul, sought revenge, and plotted a conspiracy with Calus' closest followers. Despite Calus' popularity for his redistribution of Praetorate wealth and reforms of the Legions granting citizenship to the legionnaires, many leaders thought Calus was too decadent and not committed to war. At the head of this conspiracy was Dominus Ghaul, who succeeded in usurping him and ending his reign. Calus was confronted by a council of traitors, including his own daughter, and was deposed. In exile, Calus has been traveling the cosmos aboard The Leviathan, also known as "The World-Eater". In his exile, he sought revenge, exploring the "secret places" of the galaxy and "roar into nothing," claiming that the nothing answered back. He promised that whoever slew the conspirators would be given great wealth and glory.[1]

Return to Power

After the death of Ghaul, Calus immediately set to work on reclaiming the empire. He gave elements of the now leaderless Red Legion the chance to "join the loyalist regime," sending them on missions to collect geological data on Nessus. These transmissions are intercepted in the Adventure Invitation from the Emperor. Calus intended to convert the soil of the planet into "Royal Wine".

Calus extended an invitation to The Guardian to board his vessel for slaying Ghaul. The Guardians accept Calus' challenge and following a long journey through Calus' palace and defeating his loyalist army, the Guardians seemingly meet Calus in person in his throne room. Facing off against the exiled Cabal Emperor, the Guardians survive his strange powers and after dealing critical damage, they find that the Calus they are facing is really a robotic duplicate. Regardless, the Guardians succeed in destroying the robot. Before the machines destruction, Calus boasts about his power and claims to know the "real truth" about the galaxy. Nonetheless, he rewards the Guardians for completing his challenge and offers them a place by his side should they seek him out.

Traits

Calus is a very hedonistic and narcissistic individual, immersing himself in royal scenery that often depicts his own image. Calus is also a very overweight and inactive individual, sending an automaton to face the Guardians instead of doing it himself, only directly fighting them from a distance by pulling them into his psionic realm to face his avatar. However, unlike the majority of his species, he demonstrates a fair amount of compassion toward the Guardians cause, allying himself after they destroy his robotic avatar. Calus also claims to have knowledge on the true origins and purpose of the Traveler.

Calus also has been imbued with potent psionic abilities by his Psion council, having the ability to pull individuals into an alternate dimension composed out of the sheer force of his psionic energy, similar to an Ascendant Realm.[2]
