Manifestation of Zavala's shame

"That is why you will fail. You put your duty before your heart."
— The Nightmare of Safiyah tormenting Zavala

The Nightmare of Safiyah is the Nightmare of Zavala's lover and mother to their child, Safiyah. Recreated with the power of the Darkness by the Lunar Pyramid, it initially served as the manifestation of the guilt and regret that Zavala felt for the death of his son, Hakim, and subsequent breakdown of his relationship with Safiyah. After Zavala accepted that he could not change his past actions and showed a desire to heal, the Nightmare became the Memory of Safiyah, representing the positive qualities of his lost love.

Biography[edit]

The Nightmare of Safiyah would manifest upon Zavala setting foot upon the Leviathan.[1] Upon Crow's Nightmare being successfully confronted, The Coalition leadership would turn its attention to the Nightmare of Safiyah as it began to weigh on Zavala and impair his leadership and belief. Upon being initially confronted, Zavala would fail to let go of his shame, refusing to accept what happened to Hakim and his abandonment of Safiyah after his death.[2] Zavala would take a week to reflect and spend time with Empress Caiatl, Eris Morn, and Saladin Forge.[citation needed] Upon getting enough encouragement, he'd once again face his fears. This time, the Nightmare of Safiyah would be overcome and transformed into the Memory of Safiyah.[3]

This memory would prove invaluable as she'd come to assist The Guardian during their battle against Emperor Calus within the Chantry of the Darkest Hour. After Calus' banishment from the Leviathan, the Memory of Safiyah would disperse and leaving Zavala with a sense of catharsis.[4] Yet below this catharsis, a wound in his faith towards The Traveler would remain.[citation needed]

Personality and traits[edit]

As a Nightmare, Safiyah was bitter and angry with Zavala and the Guardians. She often taunted Zavala for his (at the time) blind loyalty to the Traveler and how he could be stoic to a fault. However, once she became a memory, she became far softer and inspirational.[citation needed]
