One of the oldest known Vex programs |
- "To confront my Descendants here on Uranus now is to confront the Vex at their beginnings. The God-Knight still stalks our Vex Network, yet so does the Echo. Uranus has become the center of our Kernel's breach into this plane. To this end, with the Conductor's Wordline destroyed and the Kernel freed of her Vex, the true Vex can now return to our plan to reunite and reform the pattern under one will at our head, Hezen. I will not allow this. Hezen shall not be allowed to continue this cycle, a new one must be made from now until forever."
- — System-34, the Defiant Pattern
System-34, the Defiant Pattern is a Vex Goblin of the Descendants who, following his programming, defected from the Descendants to find a way to stop them from completing history and closing the paradoxical loop of the Vex's creation within the current Flower game iteration.
Biography[edit]
- "Passion. Paradox. All to serve the pattern. No matter how simple the plan, it is complex. How complex, it becomes simple. What a disgusting joke Hezen has made of me. What a truly dire end I see in my 'dreams.'"
- — System-34, the Defiant Pattern
System-34 was formerly part of the Nessian Schism, but after Maya Sundaresh was defeated for the final time, it followed a call from the Vex Network to Uranus. There, the unnamed Goblin would join the Descendants and their leader, Hezen, the Father of All Minds. It would be here where System-34 would be given its 'name' and title of "Defiant Pattern", due to its runtime being specifically created to attempt to stop Hezen's plan.
Following this programming, System-34 would lean into his individuality given to him by Maya and defect. System-34 would spend eons within the Vex Network across time and space, endless simulations, chassis', and programs to find a way to destroy Hezen, but to no avail. Eventually, it'd reach the conclusion that only in the time it originated from was there a possibility to stop Hezen, though also was the time where the loop would be closed. Due to this new timeline being created as time went on, System-34 would have only one shot at breaking the loop. It decided the best way to learn, would be to pillage the Vault of Glass. To do this, it would travel over ten years into the past during the events of the Taken War and open the Vault, allowing an Echo of Oryx to breach it and Take the Vault's new caretaker, Morphon, Mourning Mind. With the Vex of that time distracted with the Taken's incursion, System-34 would pillage all simulations, timelines, and memories that Atheon, Time's Conflux possessed along with the technology of the Gorgons, hoping to find a way to take that power outside of the Vault. This would also allow it to gain vital information on Guardians, along with the one that'd heed the Vex's call in the voice of Praedyth, the one who'd cleanse the Vault of its Taken infestation.
With the knowledge of the Vault of Glass, System-34 would then modify his Slap Rifle to resemble and function similar to the Vex Mythoclast, though with some personal modifications. He'd then take this knowledge and return to the Vex Network in hopes to using it, but Hezen would reveal all of System-34's countless eons of existence were all so he would reclaim the Vault's secrets discretely and further prove the pattern cannot be defied as this was how the Vault of Glass was even built to begin with, and he was to become its master with a true runtime name, Ixion, Time's Conflux.
System-34 would defy this desire and, out of chances and the loop imminent within the blooming timeline, System-34 would once again fall back upon the Guardian, hoping they and their forces of the current day would be what was needed to destroy Hezen and break the loop. If they stopped Atheon, the God-Knight, and even broke fate to create an unseen timeline with no true glimpsable future, perhaps they could even break a paradox. They made one with the Saint, they can break one too.
Personality and Traits[edit]
System-34 is loyal to the Vex as a species and sees the independence given to them as a mistake, though sees how Hezen's plan to continue the loop only dooms them to a failed pattern and wishes to see a new future for the Vex with the hope of victory. Rather than the guaranteed obscurity and failure they are now. He also admits that despite his distain for independence, he possession of it has proven to be a useful boon in his schemes even today.
System-34 does not see the Guardians as allies, rather a tool to help in defeating Hezen. Though he still has a level of respect for them. System-34 is blunt, cold, and does not comprehend humor, though understands the culture of it so humor is not lost on him, he just doesn't find it funny. System-34 is patient and often even slow as it has existed on a timescale not even the Hive gods can comprehend. As such the current years are such a small percentage of his life that he barely even realizes time is passing. Despite his cold personality, Hezen will get confrontational if he is prodded with the concept that his fate is to become Atheon, Time's Conflux (Known to Hezen as Ixion) and command the Vault of Glass, only to then die at the hands of the very warriors he now relies on for help. He also sports an uncharacteristic level of paranoia around the Nine, especially that of VII, who he believes is in some way influencing or even working with Hezen and has been for a long time, far before any of the other outer orbits even began to consider defection from the inner orbits. He believes VII is the most wicked and evil of the Nine and that it was the first to propose the idea of defection and war between the Nine's halves, with its plan with Hezen spanning back billions of years at the earliest.
Trivia and Behind the Scenes[edit]
- I imagine System-34 has a similar voice to Kalani from Star Wars the Clone Wars.
- Originally System-34 was going to have a lot more personality and actually be pro-independence, but I felt he was too same-y to other DLC partners we've had in the past like Fynch, Crow, Nimbus, and Lodi.
- System-34 originally didn't have much importance beyond being a talking head, but as I wrote him I wanted more than that and I decided that it'd be super cool if he had a bigger role to play.
- He also originally was going to look more like a western cowboy, but I wanted to keep the feeling of him being a Vex, just able to make independent choices. Which is also why he has a coat and bandana because he saw what happened to the rest of his collective so he decided to try and avoid freezing.
