A Guardian Rises is the first story mission for Destiny 3 for New Light (aka players with no save data from Destiny 2). It is structured similarly to the mission of the same name from Destiny, where it's intended to help teach basic game mechanics as the Guardian works their way through the ruins of Old Chicago to find a weapon to defend themselves from the Fallen and a Jumpship that can take them to the Last City.

In the ruined streets of Old Chicago, a lone Ghost flies around, scanning various skeletons in cars.
- Ghost: Ouch!
An Anarch Captain views the Ghost through the scope of their Wire Rifle and orders a Vandal and Wretch to move towards it. The Ghost hears a roar and ducks into a nearby ruined building for cover. They continue scanning inside the building, before stumbling upon a body.
- Ghost: Is it possible?
The Ghost opens up and unleashes a bright burst of Light.
- Ghost: There you are.
The screen fades to black.
Perspective shifts to the Guardian's first-person view as they open their eyes repeatedly.
- Ghost: Guardian. Guardian? Eyes up, Guardian!
The Guardian slowly gets to their feet and looks at the Ghost.
- Ghost: It worked. You're alive! You don't know how long I've been looking for you. I'm a Ghost. Actually, now I'm your Ghost. And you… well, you've been dead a long time.
The Guardian looks at their hands and flexes their fingers before returning their gaze to Ghost.
- Ghost: So you're going to see a lot of things you won't understand.
A Fallen Captain shrieks in the background. The Ghost turns to look and then turns back to the Guardian.
- Ghost: This is Anarch territory. We aren't safe here. I have to get you to The City. Hold still.
The Ghost disappears.
- Ghost: Don't worry, I'm still with you. We need to move. Fast.
{Gameplay}
The Guardian makes their way into an alleyway. As they near the entrance to the street, a loud rumbling is heard.
- Ghost: Quick! Get to cover!
The Guardian does so and watches as a large Fallen mech slowly walks past, crushing some cars under its feet, followed by several Fallen troops.
- Ghost: Those are the Anarchs, a violent band of Eliksni. We have managed, somewhat, to make peace with most of the Eliksni, but this lot still wage war against the City.
- Ghost: If we have any chance of getting you out of here, you need a weapon to defend yourself. I've picked up a nearby weapons cache. Marking now.

{Cutscene}
The Guardian and Ghost approach the Jumpship. The Ghost flies up and begins scans the Jumpship.
- Ghost: It's been here awhile. Hasn't made a jump in ages. We're lucky the Anarchs haven't completely stripped it for parts.
- Guardian: Will it fly?
- Ghost: I can make it work.
The Ghost enters the Jumpship. After a moment, its engines power on and the Jumpship breaks free from the cables, hovering in the air.
- Ghost: Okay, it won't go beyond Earth, but it'll get us to the City at least. Now, about that transmat…
The Guardian hears a roar behind them. They turn to see Anarch forces move in led by a large Anarach Captain.
- Ghost: Bringing you in!
The Guardian is transmatted aboard the jumpship before it flies out of the building. The large Anarch Captain watches them leave as his forces try to shoot the ship down.
- Ghost: We can deal with them later. For now, let's get you home.
On the ground, strange creatures begin emerging from the ground and roar as the Jumpship flies away from Old Chicago.
Cut to black as the logo for Destiny 3 slowly fades in.
