A Distortion in the sky of the Court of Savathûn

Distortions are Eclipse-powered anomalies that appeared across the Sol System with the release of Monument of Triumph.

Overview[edit]

A distortion appears as a large jagged hole in the sky. The borders of the hole and the surrounding tears are a pulsing red, and a starry sky is visible within. Red particles of Eclipse energy float throughout the affected area, empowering the residents.

Distortions are caused by the power of the Outer Nine. They are an attempt to brute-force the degradation of reality as part of their greater plan to flee the Sol System. As of now, the Vanguard has mobilized its forces to contain the damage done by distortions.[1]

Gameplay[edit]

Distortions are a modifier to Patrol Destinations introduced with Monument of Triumph. On a schedule, a Destination will be affected by a Distortion for an hour. The Distortion will appear and disappear from the Destination in real time, both with visible animations and sounds.

As long as the Distortion is present, all combatants will be empowered with Eclipse energy, giving them increased resilience and special powers.

All loot obtained in the Destination will have its level increased by 1 tier, with Heroic Public Events providing Tier 5 gear.

After a Public Event is completed in a region, the special Public Event Distortion Breach will start after 1 minute, which will award Monument of Triumph gear upon completion.

In each region, there will also be additional smaller events that can be completed for more gear. They are activated by interacting with floating glowing red spheres, highlighted with a specific icon. There include cleansing puddles of Eclipse corruption, destroying clumps of corruption, and passing through several columns of light.

Completing activities and defeating combatants in the Distortion destination will reward players with Strange Matter.

Trivia[edit]

  • The amount of Destinations on which a Distortion can occur is yet another reference to the number 7 in Bungie games.
  • A Distortion can be seen in the skies of the first arena in Dares of Eternity, however it is purely cosmetic does not affect the enemies encountered or rewards obtained.
