Part 1
The comic begins with a message from Rasputin. After detecting the presence of an individual he dubs the Investigator looking for his "Polaris assets", he decides that a nondisclosure mandate would compromise his prime directive and considers promoting the investigator to an authorized user. He then considers his existence following the Collapse, having needed to change from what he originally was made to be as it was not enough to protect humanity from the Titanomach despite all they had given him and, despite his victory, he was left alone. When the Investigator, one of those killed in in the battle, was brought back with power she nor Rasputin could comprehend by the Gardener, she looked to Rasputin instead of it, but she had yet to find the source of him. Rasputin believed that she would not recognize him if she remembered him and that her moral formatting would not be enough to comprehend what he had become. ultimatly, he would allow her to approach him, but only so far, stating that he is no longer alone.

In her camp in the Arcadia Circle on Mars, Ana Bray is speaking with Camrin Dumuzi about finding a Clovis Bray facility in the area, who tells her that a map she had found could narrow the search area down to 200 kilometers. She tells that the ID badge Ana had on her when she was first resurrected led to a research facility they didn't know existed and that they believed that Clovis Bray's "Cradle of Invention" was a myth but that Ana was living proof of it. She promised she would do whatever she could to help her find anything, including pillaging files from Owl Sector's archives. The two assure each other and Camrin tells Ana that she's risking more than her life out there and to stay safe, find the cradle and to come home.

Later, Ana's Ghost, Jinju, tells her that he had mapped the search area, but they had no way to know how far beneath the Martian ice due to its density. Ana spots something in the ice using a pair of cybernetic eye implants that she had picked up alongside her Jumpship from a Braytech cache on Venus and notes that the glacier near it didn't form naturally. Ana and Carmin conclude that Rasputin was likely what caused it. Ana approaches multiple frozen Frames and a transport vehicle, and wonders what it would take to break through the ice before hearing something. She finds Red Legion Cabal attempting to drill into the ice. She manages to take them out, but is pinned down by a War Beast. Before she can shoot it with her Golden Gun, Ana loses her Light (due to the Red Legion in Homecoming), but still manages to kill it.

That night, as Jinju heals her injury, Ana asks why she lost her Light. Jinju tells her he doesn't know and that he can try to listen to Vanguard channels to get answers, but it ran the risk of being located. Ana tells him to do it, believing that they would be too busy to  track her down of what happened to her wasn't an isolated incident. Carmin tells Ana she can account for various dangers in the Martian polar regions, but the area hadn't been touched in centuries. She wishes she could come up with a plan for every potential issue to keep Ana safe, but knows that it's not possible, that Ana is prepared for anything and that she must face it on her own. Ana remarks on the irony of her situation, as she had not brought Carmin with her because only a Guardian could survive the dangers of Mars and now she was rendered mortal.  She laments that if she dies, everything she did, including leaving Carmin, would have been for nothing. Carmin reassures her that she isn't a Guardian because a Ghost resurrected her or a Bray because of what her badge said; she is who she choses to be, and she was the bravest person Carmin knew. Ana thanks her and tells her she can find it thanks to her aid.

An unknown number of days later, Ana is trekking across the icy Martian surface when she spots what she thought was a meteor shower overhead. Jinju informs him that they were actually Warsats dropping from orbit, but does not know why. Ana decides it's something to worry about later and tells Jinju that the facility's heatsink compound is on the other side of a frozen sea. Jinju then picks up Zavala's message to Guardians to rally on Titan after losing the Last City, much to Ana's dismay. Jinju suggests they head to Titan, but Ana refuses, knowing Rasputin would make more of a difference than her joining Zavala on Titan. However, Ana would be caught by a Warsat and dragged into the ocean. She detaches her cloak and tries to swim back to the surface, but begins to drift into unconsciousness as she thinks of Carmin.
