Cutscene

The Guardian's Jumpship, the Wandering comes gently over the hill, slowing down as it drops The Guardian off on a hill outside Quarantine Zone 236. As the Wandering takes back off into the sky the camera tracks towards the hulking wreck of the Shard of the Traveler looming in the background, deep inside the European Dead Zone.

Suraya Hawthorne: You sure you want to do this? That Shard is the reason this place is called a “Dead Zone.”

[Ghost: We have to, Hawthorne. It’s a sign.

Hawthorne: Yeah a sign that says, “Dead Zone.”

Gameplay

Quarantine Sector 236
Restricted Zone
Find a way to the Shard of the Traveler
Enter the quarantine zone
The Guardian transmats into Quarantine Sector 236 on a hill outside the walls of the Quarantine Zone and begins making their way towards the entrance.

Hawthorne: You know, I’ve been all over the EDZ. Charming enough. I mean nothing says “come visit” like a dark, haunted forest.

Ghost: But non-Guardians aren’t supposed to leave the City!

Hawthorne: Here’s the thing about City rules – they stop applying once you leave the City.

Hawthorne: There’s a small gap in the wall. Hard to see, but it’s there. Nobody goes farther than that. At least nobody that wants to come back.

The wall has collapsed, blocking access along the road, forcing the player to divert through the rubble to the side of the entrance. If the player delays this, Hawthorne will say:

Hawthorne: Duck under the car. It's a tight fit but you can slip through. At least I can. Then again, I don't wear all that fancy armor.

The player moves through the wall, ducking under the car and other rubble and exiting out the other side. Beyond the wall the road continues leading the player on into a tunnel where it ends once more in a pile of collapsed stone. A small hole in the wall to the side opens into a dark cave which the player starts walking through.

Hawthorne: Let me know when you’ve [static].

Ghost: Hawthorne? Hawthorne! Can you hear us? Signal’s dead.

    • Fallen lurk in the area

Ghost: Did you hear something? Ghost: It’s – the Fallen! Ghost: Those Fallen weren’t wearing any house colors we’ve seen before.

Blackened Forest

Ghost: The shard of the Traveler. Ghost: This is it. Right out of our vision.

Ghost: I think we… scared them away. Ghost: Take me to the Shard. Ghost: This is why we were led here. Ghost: I haven’t been this close to the Traveler’s Light since… Ghost: Do you feel it? Ghost: Hold onto your helmet.

    • Ghost absorbs the Light and the Guardian regains their power

Ghost: Do you feel it? The light is back! We’re back! Ghost: Eyes up, Guardian. Ghost: Let’s light ’em up.

Trivia

  • The name of the area called The Blackened Forrest, when combined with the area's setting being in the European Dead Zone and having the majority of signage and place-names written in German is likely a reference to the [Black Forrest] in the state of Baden-Württemberg in Germany.
