The Handler Shank is a specialized Shank unit responsible for controlling captured Hive Thrall. The Red Menace has implanted devices in the Thrall's heads, allowing the Shank to effectively "mind control" them.

Overview[edit]

The Handler Shank is a specialized Red Menace support unit designed to command enslaved Hive Thrall through improvised neuro-control technology. Rather than engaging enemies directly, the Handler coordinates captured Hive Thrall that have been fitted with crude control implants, forcing them to fight on behalf of the Red Menace.

The exact origin of this technology remains unknown. Vanguard analysts believe the Red Menace developed it by combining scavenged Fallen machinery with experimental modifications. Perhaps it was achieved in a manner similar to how Hiraks, the Mindbender, was able to influence the Hive, but there is still not enough information to confirm this theory. Regardless, the technology allows the Handler Shank to override a Thrall's instincts for a limited time. While effective, the system appears unstable and requires the Handler to remain within operational range of its captive.

Gameplay[edit]

Unlike standard Shanks, the Handler avoids direct confrontation. It remains behind friendly forces, constantly repositioning to stay out of danger while directing its enslaved Thrall toward enemy targets. If threatened or approached, the Handler will immediately retreat, relying on its Thrall's for protection instead of defending itself.

The Handler Shank's primary function is battlefield support rather than offense. It will rarely attack unless cornered, instead prioritizing the survival of both itself and the Thrall's under its control.

If the Handler Shank is destroyed, the control implant immediately loses its signal, freeing the captive Thrall. Once released, the Thrall reverts to its natural aggressive behavior and indiscriminately attacks the nearest targets, including members of the Red Menace. This sudden betrayal can disrupt enemy formations, making the destruction of a Handler Shank a valuable tactical objective.
