A Cryptarch, or "Crypto-archaeologist" is the designation for an individual who studies the properties of encoded matter, known as Engrams. These individuals can unlock the patterns stored within Engrams, allowing for the item encoded within the pattern to be spontaneously created in a process known as "decoding". Certain Engrams are encrypted and may require the Cryptarch to attain a certain rank before he can decode them.[1]

The Cryptarch encountered by the Player in Destiny is named Master Rahool and is located within the Tower's plaza.[1]

The Cryptarch's Rank and Reputation can be seen to the left of the Cryptarch.

Reputation is the Cryptarch's skill in identifying, decrypting and decoding Engrams brought in by the Player. It is built with the Cryptarch by either buying Engrams from him (which he then decodes) or by providing him with Engrams to decode, which are found during the Player's travels. As he decodes more Engrams, his Reputation increases. This is represented by a circular meter which surrounds the Crypto-archaeology symbol located to the left of the Cryptarch Symbol on his inventory screen. Each time this meter fills completely, the Cryptarch's Rank increases by 1. The higher the number, the greater the Cryptarch's skill at unlocking any Encrypted Engrams the player brings to him. Certain Encrypted Engrams require Cryptarch to be of a particular rank before they can be decrypted and decoded.[1]
