"And my vanquisher will read that book, seeking the weapon, and they will come to understand me, where I have been and where I was going."

Start[edit]

The Spider: Ah, my little scallywag. Welcome to my newest home. Ever closer to the center of power! Vanguard wants to keep an eye on me, I'm sure. That's fine. I've got more eyes than they do. [laughs] Plenty of ears, too. And old Spider doesn't like what he's hearing from Europa. I had an agent investigating one orbital station for salvage. Then she lost contact. It'd have to be something worse than Salvation vagrants knocking around up there to take her down. All we're getting on the Europa channels now are automated warnings. Old Human ones. I'm not sending anyone else on my payroll after a corpse. It's time for drastic measures. You're the drastic measures. I'd sweeten the pot, but we both know you'll take what you want from the facilities anyway. I'll be happy with your leftovers! [laughs] Give it a look. Just try not to crash this station too, would you?

"Ah, my little scallywag. Welcome to my newest home. Ever closer to the center of power!"

Spider throws four arms out wide, showing off his new quarters.

"Vanguard wants to keep an eye on me, I'm sure. That's fine. I've got more eyes than they do." Spider laughs in a wheeze that shakes his suspended throne before leaning in to make direct eye contact.

"I had an agent investigating one orbital station for salvage. Then she lost contact. It'd have to be something worse than Salvation vagrants knocking around up there to take her down."

Spider is unwilling to send more of his people into a dangerous situation but suggests that there are plenty of riches for the Guardian ready to take on the task of digging into a derelict station in Europa's orbit.

He leans back again, folding his arms over his belly and adds, "Just try not to crash this station too, would you?"

Step 1[edit]

Complete the "Vesper's Host" dungeon on any difficulty.

  • Completed

Step 2[edit]

Locate the beacon on Vesper Station's outer hull.

  • Intercept Signal

A beacon hums to life…

Step 3[edit]

Return to Spider.

  • Completed

"Curiouser and curiouser," Spider rumbles. "A whole Salvation gang absconding with a Ketch, and a Golden Age AI locked up on a station alone... Well, Guardian, you did better than my own agents — and cheap at the price!" He barks a long, loud laugh.

After clearing his throat noisily, Spider continues: "A BrayTech AI is a valuable thing, no matter how poor her personal attitude. We'd better make sure she doesn't fall into the wrong hands."

"While you were busy clearing the nest, I had my people doing some digging on the side. Their key discovery was... that many discoveries are waiting for us in Europa's orbit. More investigation means more profit for us all, and an answer to some lingering mysteries, eh?"

Spider looks you over in satisfaction. Before dismissing you fro his presence, he adds, "My last contract with a Lightbearer ended... unhappily, let's say. But I believe ours will be a fruitful partnership. Don't you?"

Return to the "Vesper's Host" dungeon and uncover its secrets.

Step 4[edit]

Spider's agents have passed along some information: There's plenty to learn in Vesper Station, for someone with the right access.

"That AI's a harsh one, but we can all come out with a hefty profit if we handle her right. Don't waste any advantage in a negotiation, eh?"
— Spider

Step 5[edit]

Now that you have its token, you can access the first-level BrayTech storage module.

  • Secret chest opened

"Too much left behind. I'm drowning in monuments to the dead."
— Vesper Central

Step 6[edit]

Uncover secrets hidden within Vesper Station.

"Remember, we want her on our side. Play nice."
— Spider

Step 7[edit]

Acquire your reward.

  • Second secret chest opened

"Take what you want. Nobody else is left to prove it."
— Vesper Central

Step 8[edit]

Return to Spider in the City and hear what he has to say.

  • Completed

"Let's talk in person. We could use some privacy, you and me."
— Spider

"We've learned so much together, haven't we? Believe me, I treat my Guardian partners well. Look at how high my last partner has risen in City authority. Always remember what Spider can do for you."

"Now, for Vesper Station..." Spider leans in conspiratorially, lowering his voice to a crackling whisper. "There's an ultimate control mechanism. Bray's personal key. And if you control the AI, you control the station. Vesper Central seems lonely up there. A bit out of control. She could use a guiding hand, don't you think?"

One hand flexes on the armrest of his throne.

"Now, my agents have turned up one little key on their search for the big one. You take it and you grab what you want — and you remember it was your old chum Spider who had you in his thoughts this whole time, all right?"

Spider waves to an agent of his in the back of the room. They tap at a console to transfer a fragment of data:

PERMISSIONS GRANTED:
TechAccess|Storage|Restricted|42

Step 9[edit]

Use the key on the second-level BrayTech storage module.

  • Completed

"A little for me, a little for you. Partners split the loot. Understand?"
— Spider

Step 10[edit]

Visit Spider.

  • Completed

"Well done, my friend. I'm sure there's nobody in all of Sol more reliable than you."
— Spider

"Guardian! My friend, my partner in perfectly legal enterprise! Enriched with the fruits of your labor!"

Spider roars cheerfully at you from this throne. His agents scurry past on errands of their own.

"A job well done as usual. That's what I like to see in a partner. Steadiness. Trustworthiness, even. And a willingness to share the profits."

"That little AI up there... She's lonely, don't you think? Best keep an eye on her. We haven't turned up that key yet, but it's got to exist. One access code implies another, doesn't it?"

Spider puffs out depleted Ether, satisfied with himself. He adds, "All perfectly aboveboard, of course. It would be a kindness, even — I'm sure she could use a distraction."

Despite his generous words, there's a look in his eyes that speaks loudly of greed.

Mysteries linger within Vesper Station, and in Spider's intentions.
