The Golden Age

- The present day - The Traveler is discovered on Mars. It imparts its vast knowledge to humanity and aids in the terraformation of Mercury, Venus, and Mars, ushering in a great Golden Age that lasts for several centuries.
The Dark Age

- The Collapse - The Darkness, the ancient enemy of the Traveler, arrives in the Solar System, precipitating the Collapse and the abrupt end of the Golden Age. Earth's defenders are steadily beaten back until humanity is threatened with extinction. At the last moment, the Traveler intervenes and sacrifices itself to ward off the Darkness for a time. With its dying breath, the Traveler creates the Ghosts who are tasked with seeking out and reviving dead Guardians to continue the battle against the Darkness.
