Five of Swords is a consumable sold by Xûr that allowed players to modify their Nightfall modifiers.

Acquiring it from Xûr will allow players to change the difficulty and the modifiers of the Nightfall until the next reset. The consumable will only allow up to 4 modifiers to be selected and some of them will have modifiers that either affect the player positively or negatively. The difficulty of the Nightfall can be raised to earn higher scores and more rewards wich can be raised as more negative modifiers are on the card. The card can also allow players to raise the difficulty via a handicap mechanic. This item was removed with the launch of Beyond Light as the result of the Nightfall playlist now integrated into the Vanguard playlist.

• The system that was introduced in this item would eventually be used for the difficulty system with The Edge of Fate.
